Why I Chose Wanlong Raw Fish Shop & Basic Information

While searching for popular eateries at Yongle Market in Taipei, Taiwan,
I came across a post recommending sushi along with the 'oil rice' and decided to visit.
I was also curious to see what Taiwanese sushi would be like, haha!

Waiting Time & Atmosphere

Visited on a weekday at 9 AM
I was lucky!
There was no one there!!!
I'd heard there were usually long queues,
but on this day, both the oil rice shop and Wanlong Raw Fish Shop
were so quiet with no waiting that I was actually a bit flustered.
I even wondered if I'd come to the wrong place, haha!

As a restaurant located inside the market, it doesn't have a huge amount of seating,
but it was relatively spacious compared to other market eateries,
and there were 4-person tables in addition to counter seats.

When I arrived, they kindly guided me to a seat.
As I was shown to my table and ordered,
with sushi on the menu, it almost felt like I was in Japan, haha!

If you sit at the counter, you can see the thick cuts of fish.
Menu & What I Ordered

I ordered a mix of what I wanted and their recommended dishes.
The note at the bottom is important!
There's a minimum order of 320 New Taiwan Dollars per person.
Ordered Menu | Quantity | Price |
Nigiri Combination | 1 | 260 TWD |
sashimi Combination | 1 | 330 TWD |
Red Shrimp Sashimi | 1 | 130 TWD |
TOTAL ~$25 (720 TWD) |
This price was calculated when 1 New Taiwan Dollar was around 46 KRW,
so prices might vary now due to changes in the exchange rate.
A Taste Test of What We Ordered

The dishes were presented so neatly and cleanly!
At first glance, it looked promising, but it left a little to be desired.
It wasn't quite what I'd seen in other review photos,
as it didn't have that sparkling, fresh look I was hoping for 😔

Let's dive into the taste reviews of the three main dishes first!!

Sushi - Nigiri Combination
The sushi combination, priced around ~$8, was quite decent.
Tuna, salmon, and that lovely pinkish fish – was it yellowtail? The combination was solid!
As for the taste, well... the fish itself was a bit of a letdown...
The neta (sushi topping) thickness was decent enough,
but it definitely didn't live up to my expectations 😔
As a big sushi lover, I was genuinely sad about it.

Sashimi - Sashimi Combination
It was noticeably thicker than the sushi neta, which was a plus.
Not a bad arrangement overall, the price was just so-so,,
and the flavor was also quite unremarkable.
Why couldn't it live up to my hopes?! 😩
Still, thanks to its generous thickness, the texture was satisfying!

Red Shrimp Sashimi
The red shrimp was wonderfully moist and rich, easily the most delicious item.
This one got my full seal of approval!
Truly, these were prawns bursting with great taste and aroma.

The miso soup pictured is complimentary.
You can help yourself at the self-service corner located on one side of the restaurant,
and I definitely recommend giving it a try!
Visually, it's packed with plenty of ingredients,
and it was wonderfully warm, savory, and delicious.
Final Thoughts

Ultimately, it wasn't bad, but
I couldn't say it was completely great either –
that's the Wanlong Fish Shop inside Taipei's Yongle Market!
My high expectations made the experience a bit more disappointing.
Honestly, Korean sushi is just more delicious... 😔
