Taipei offers an incredible array of experiences, from tantalizing street food and relaxing foot massages to vibrant night markets. But for many travelers, no trip to Taiwan's capital is complete without venturing out to the iconic quartet: Yehliu Geopark, Shifen, Jinguashi, and Jiufen. Given the distances between these scenic spots, most visitors opt to combine them into a single, unforgettable day trip.
If you're a first-timer or looking to maximize your budget, a bus tour offers fantastic value. However, if you're traveling with family or prefer a more customized itinerary and freedom, a private taxi tour might be the perfect choice. Each option has its clear advantages, so choosing the right one depends on your travel style and schedule. Let's dive into what makes each of these destinations so special.
Yehliu Geopark
First up is 'Yeh' – Yehliu Geopark. My initial visit here left me wondering if it was truly worth the journey, mainly because the weather was miserable. Rain poured down, forcing us into raincoats, and the sky and sea were a dreary gray, obscuring the natural beauty.
However, my second visit, under a clear, sunny sky, completely changed my perspective! The scenery was breathtaking, and exploring the uniquely shaped rock formations was an absolute delight.
I also ventured up the small hill in the distance. If you enjoy walking or hiking, it's a worthwhile climb, but be warned – it's steeper than it looks! Make sure you're up for the challenge before heading up.
After a challenging uphill trek, you'll be rewarded with a pretty decent walking path.
However, climbing up and down can be quite tiring and hot, so make sure to grab a refreshing drink afterward!
Among the many oddly shaped rocks along the coastline, the most famous is undoubtedly the Queen's Head Rock. If you want a photo with the actual rock, be prepared for a long wait in line. To save time, there's a replica near the exit (pictured on the right) where you can snap a photo without the queue.
Shifen
Next up is 'Shi' – Shifen, famous for its sky lanterns. But before you send your wishes to the heavens, make sure to fuel up with some delicious chicken wing fried rice!
This dish is surprisingly tasty and a must-try. I made sure to grab one before exploring the area.
Shifen offers plenty of delicious food and sights to explore. I chose to spend my time wandering around and soaking in the atmosphere rather than launching a lantern myself.
These other treats were also fantastic. The old train tracks are incredibly picturesque, offering countless photo opportunities. Shifen truly has a lot more to offer than meets the eye.
Jinguashi
Our 'Jin' stop is Jinguashi. This area often has less of an 'impact' compared to the other three, to the point where some tours even omit it from their itineraries. The most famous local specialty here is the Miner's Lunchbox.
It's not necessarily famous for its exquisite taste, but rather as a unique, signature experience of the area, making it worth trying.
The Golden Museum inside didn't leave a huge impression either, though the moving shadow projections caught my attention. The way the light moved with the project created a dynamic, almost cinematic effect.
While it may not have a standout attraction, Jinguashi is generally a beautiful place with lovely scenery, perfect for a peaceful stroll.
Jiufen
Finally, 'Jiu' – Jiufen. This is arguably the most famous stop on the tour. The A-Mei Tea House, which gets incredibly crowded once the sun sets and the lanterns illuminate the street, is a must-see. If you want a table here, skip other stops and head straight to Jiufen to queue up early.
Here, you can enjoy various desserts and teas, with a view of the tea house across the street. If your main goal is to experience the famous A-Mei Tea House, then waiting in line is the way to go. However, if capturing that iconic photo is your priority, you don't necessarily need to wait. You can find a good spot further down or even visit a tea house on the opposite side for a great vantage point.
One thing to note is that the narrow streets get incredibly packed with tourists, making it challenging to move around. If you're on a bus tour, factor in extra time to navigate through the crowds when it's time to depart.
I tried this dessert, recommended by a local, and it was surprisingly delicious, especially the chewy texture!

These are some excellent ways to plan your adventure. I've personally visited the Yehliu, Shifen, Jinguashi, and Jiufen tour every time I've been to Taipei. Even though I sometimes think, 'Do I really need to go again?', I find myself drawn back, feeling like something would be missing if I didn't. Chances are, I'll be heading back again soon!
The Queen's Head Rock is so popular that you often have to queue to take a picture. If you're short on time, you can take a photo in front of the replica rock near the exit, where there's no queue.
Jinguashi sometimes gets excluded from tour itineraries because it doesn't have the same impact as the other three Yehliu-Shifen-Jiufen spots. While it has the famous Miner's Bento and Gold Museum, it's generally a beautiful place with scenic views, perfect for a stroll.
A-Mei Teahouse gets very crowded when the lights turn on at sunset, so there's no need to wait if visiting famous spots isn't your primary goal. If your main purpose is photography, it's better to find a spot below the teahouse or enter a teahouse across from it to take pictures.
