I recently visited Wang's Broth, a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant in Taipei, renowned for its Lu Rou Fan. It's a spot that often pops up when you're searching for authentic Taiwanese food!
Wang's Broth

You'll find Wang's Broth tucked away within the bustling Huaxi Street Night Market. Out of all the Taipei eateries I researched, this one had the longest line and the longest wait – it was absolutely packed, as you can see from the photos!
While I went for lunch, it would also be a fantastic spot to grab a bite while exploring the night market.

They thoughtfully provide menus to browse while you wait, even with English translations and pictures, making ordering a breeze.

Being in the heart of the market, the wait can get quite warm. I was definitely sweating buckets!
This is the very place that Chef Baek Jong-won visited on 'Street Food Fighter,' and his enthusiastic reaction made me incredibly curious. Honestly, I'm not usually a huge fan of very fatty dishes, but I had to try it.

Once you're seated, you mark your order on a slip (the paper you see in the picture) and then head to the counter to pay upfront. Yes, even ordering and paying involves a queue.....
Despite the market setting, the interior of the restaurant was surprisingly clean. It was a great mix of curious tourists and local regulars.
Wang's Broth Menu & Taste

My husband and I ordered quite a spread, didn't we? But the portions are generally quite small. We tried Lu Rou Fan, Kong Rou Fan, stir-fried sweet potato leaves, a tofu dish, and the clear pork soup. Five dishes for two people – talk about an appetite! The Lu Rou Fan features finely diced pork, which was almost entirely fatty bits.
The tofu dish looked intensely seasoned, almost like it would be super salty, but I was pleasantly surprised! It wasn't salty at all; in fact, it was quite mild and delicious. Taiwan truly has an amazing variety of tofu dishes, and I adore their tofu desserts.

My husband and my absolute favorite, hands down, was the clear pork soup. It was infinitely more delicious than the Lu Rou Fan, in my opinion. You absolutely *must* order this one!
The stir-fried sweet potato leaves were just okay – I probably wouldn't order them again. They didn't have much flavor.....
The Lu Rou Fan and Kong Rou Fan had a subtle, familiar savory flavor, almost like a light black bean sauce. For me, someone who isn't keen on fatty meat, they felt a bit rich and could get tiring.
Of course, my husband, who loves fatty cuts, thoroughly enjoyed his – so keep that in mind!
Anyway, that's why I found myself reaching for the less flavorful sweet potato leaves and more of that refreshing clear soup to balance it all out. Haha!
To summarize,
While some dishes can be a bit rich, Wang's Broth offers a unique and distinctly Taiwanese culinary experience. The portions are light, making it perfect for trying several items!
The clear pork soup is our highest recommendation!
