After wrapping up our taxi tour, we asked our driver to drop us off right at the Raohe Night Market entrance. It's truly the perfect way to end a day of sightseeing!
We dove headfirst into the market, trying a little bit of everything. Here's my honest take on what to recommend and what you might want to skip at Raohe Night Market.
The market entrance was already bustling with people. Right at the start, you'll spot the most famous stall, known for its pepper buns.
Pepper Buns (Hújiāo Bǐng)

You won't need to search for them; they're right at the very beginning of Raohe Night Market. The line might look incredibly long, but don't worry, it moves surprisingly fast!
They're baked in a tandoor-like oven, which is pretty cool to watch. However, my husband and I found them a bit overwhelming for our taste buds. We both generally enjoy spices, and my husband loves savory meat dumplings, but honestly, these weren't something we'd rave about.
If you're with a group, perhaps grab one to share and see if it's for you!
Grilled King Oyster Mushrooms

After our less-than-stellar experience with the famous pepper buns, we ventured further into the market. We spotted another line, this time for grilled king oyster mushrooms! Everyone knows how delicious these are when grilled whole, right?
They offer 10 different flavors:
Spicy, Shichimi, Wasabi, Lemon, Pepper Salt, Curry, Cheese, Seaweed, Cumin, and Rose Salt.
We opted for the Pepper Salt flavor. The mushrooms take a little while to grill, so if you time it right, you can grab one immediately, otherwise, you might have to wait for the next batch. We waited just a bit, but it was worth it!

The appearance might not be the most glamorous, but trust me, these are an absolute game-changer! Seriously delicious. If you enjoy mushrooms with your steak or barbecue, you HAVE to try these. They were so good, I even tried recreating them at home! This stall was definitely a highlight. Highly recommend!

Even on a rainy day, the market was packed with both locals and tourists. However, there's a certain section – let's call it the 'stinky tofu zone' – that I had to flee from. I went to Taiwan determined to try stinky tofu, but the smell was so potent, it made me gag! ^.^.....
Taiwanese Sausage (Xiāngcháng)

You'll find several stalls selling Taiwanese sausage throughout the market. There's something subtly addictive about the taste. Celebrity chef Baek Jong-won from 'Street Food Fighter' famously loved it, and now I understand why! I usually can't handle raw garlic because of its intensity, but paired with this greasy sausage, it's an absolute match made in heaven. These sausages are delightfully sweet and savory.
Yu Pin Yuan Iced and Hot Tangyuan
📍 Yu Pin Yuan Iced and Hot Tangyuan - Raohe Branch
No. 178號, Raohe St, Songshan District, Taipei City, Taiwan 105
This place was my husband's absolute favorite at Raohe Night Market. Unlike the street stalls, this is a proper shop located within one of the arcade buildings on the edge of the market.

We had to wait for a table inside. First, you queue up and choose your order. Most people go for Menu Item #7. The red box indicates the warm version, while the blue box is for the shaved ice version.

What arrived was a truly unexpected sight! The bottom of the bowl was filled with shaved ice, but the mochi-like dumplings on top were steaming hot. What an interesting combination!

You get six dumplings, with two different fillings: one with sesame or peanut, and the other with black sesame. The dumplings themselves are incredibly chewy and warm, and both fillings are wonderfully sweet. So delicious!
The shaved ice underneath is lightly drizzled with honey, but it's pretty subtle in flavor.

There's extra honey available in the middle of the shop if you want more sweetness, and lemon juice on the tables to mix in. It's almost like creating your own lemon-flavored shaved ice!
It might seem simple, but it was incredibly tasty. Since you can't really find anything like this back home, I highly, highly recommend trying it while you're in Taiwan!

There's nothing quite like a night market in Southeast Asia, is there? We had a really satisfying time exploring Raohe Night Market before heading back to our accommodation. While I haven't explored other night markets in Taipei yet, this was a fantastic experience.

Back at our room, we snacked on some guava we bought at the market. I absolutely adore guava and always buy it whenever I see it for sale. If you've never tried guava before, definitely give it a shot – you'll find it everywhere in night markets and shops!
My husband isn't as keen on it, but I love its subtle sweetness and crisp texture.
