Taipei, Taiwan: The Climate Lowdown

When you think of Taiwan's weather, it's easy to picture a country that's warm all year round,
conjuring images similar to Southeast Asia.
I certainly held that perception before my trip,
but upon experiencing it firsthand, Taiwan's weather was a bit different from what I expected.
While you won't experience heavy snow or the biting cold of a Korean winter,
the perceived temperature difference between summer and winter in Taiwan is surprisingly significant.

Summers are undeniably hot,
and winters felt considerably colder than I had anticipated.
What's more, many accommodations don't have heating,
so even when Taipei's outdoor weather felt spring-like,
it often felt even colder indoors.
I researched Taiwan's weather extensively before my trip,
but this kind of practical insight was really hard to find!
1. Taipei, Taiwan Weather: My January & February Experience

For those curious about Taiwan's weather in January and February,
here's what it actually felt like:
Before my trip, the average temperatures I found were:
Daytime: around 15-20°C
Morning/Evening: around 13-15°C
Just looking at these numbers, it felt like spring weather,
so I didn't expect it to be particularly cold.
However, what I actually experienced with
Taipei's January and February weather was
that the perceived temperature varied quite significantly depending on the specific weather conditions.

When I visited in early February,
it rained and was cloudy on the first two days of my trip,
making the spring clothes I'd packed feel a bit inadequate,
and with the wind picking up,
I even had to buy a hot pack from a convenience store to stay warm!
Conversely, as my trip went on,
the weather brightened up,
and during sunny daytime hours,
it felt warm enough to wear short sleeves!
✔ No snow or extreme cold
✔ Rain and wind can significantly drop the perceived temperature, making it feel chilly
✔ On clear days, the sun can be surprisingly strong, making short sleeves perfectly comfortable

So, defining Taiwan's weather in January and February with just one season is tricky.
It's more like a dynamic period, fluctuating between spring and early summer conditions.
That's why, when it comes to clothing,
dressing in layers that you can easily add or remove throughout the day
is definitely the most comfortable and practical approach.
2. What to Wear in Taipei, Taiwan: January & February Edition

When it comes to packing for Taiwan's January and February weather,
dressing in layers is absolutely crucial!
I primarily packed spring clothes,
but honestly, I'd say it was only about half successful! 😉

On the first two days, it was drizzling and quite chilly,
making it a bit too cold to wear just a spring jacket.
In fact, among the locals,
I even saw quite a few people wearing padded jackets.

But the next day, the sun was so bright and strong
that wearing a jacket during the day was absolutely out of the question,
and even just a short-sleeved shirt was enough.

In conclusion,
when it comes to what to wear in Taipei, Taiwan, during January and February,
rather than thinking of it as a 'warm winter destination',
it was most comfortable to prepare for weather similar to early spring in Korea.
3. Taipei, Taiwan January & February Weather: Must-Have Items
The biggest reason why the weather in Taipei, Taiwan, during January and February
feels colder than the actual temperature
was due to the lack of heating.
That's why after my trip,
there were exactly two essential items that made me think, 'I'm so glad I packed these!'

✔ Hot water bottle (Essential for sleeping!!)
Without it, I would have tossed and turned all night due to the cold.
In accommodations without heating,
your body can cool down easily even under the covers,
but just one hot water bottle
made a huge difference in my sleep quality.
Just having a hot water bottle
helped maintain my body temperature much better while sleeping,
which significantly enhanced my satisfaction during my winter Taiwan trip!
Fill it with hot water and place it inside your blanket
before going to bed, and it stays warm until morning.

✔ Umbrella
In Taiwan during January and February, there are many days when rain suddenly appears,
making an umbrella not an option, but a necessity.
When it rains, the perceived temperature drops significantly
and getting around becomes inconvenient,
so a lightweight, foldable umbrella
was incredibly useful throughout the trip.
To summarize Taiwan's weather in January and February:

Taipei, Taiwan, in January and February
can be a bit surprising if you assume it will be warm all the time.
However,
✔ There's no snow or extreme cold,
✔ It's not as scorching as mid-summer, making it great for walking,
✔ And if you know the weather in advance and prepare accordingly,
personally,
I felt it was an absolutely fantastic time to travel to Taiwan.
If you prepare with the mindset of traveling during early spring in Korea,
your trip to Taipei, Taiwan, in January and February
will be much more satisfying.
