Ready for an unforgettable hike in Hong Kong? Explore Tai Mo Shan, the city's tallest mountain, with our expert tips on trails, gear, and the best time to visit.
Are any of you planning a hiking adventure in Hong Kong?
If so, I highly recommend a hike up Tai Mo Shan, Hong Kong's tallest peak!
📍 Tai Mo Shan
Tai Mo Shan, Hong Kong
Tai Mo Shan stands at an impressive 957 meters, and the views from its summit are undeniably among Hong Kong's most breathtaking panoramas.

It's slightly taller than Korea's Bukhansan (836m) and lower than Hallasan (1,947m).
That's roughly 1.7 times the height of Lotte World Tower and about 1.2 times the height of the Burj Khalifa!
Quite impressive, wouldn't you say?

Having just completed the hike myself, I've put together all the essential info on the best routes, what to pack, and the ideal time to visit.
Tai Mo Shan: Hong Kong Hiking & Trekking Routes

Beginner Route (Easygoing Hike)
Follow a well-defined route, suitable for both hikers and vehicles.
- Starting Point: Tai Mo Shan Country Park Visitor Centre
- Duration: Approximately 1.5~2 hours
- Features: A gently undulating path, perfect for beginners to enjoy a leisurely stroll. You'll find plenty of scenic viewpoints along the way for admiring the landscape and capturing stunning photos.
Intermediate Route (Hiking & Trekking)

This route takes you past impressive rock formations, wild buffalo habitats, and even traditional Hong Kong graves.
- Starting Point: Lead Mine Pass or Route Twisk
- Duration: Approximately 3~4 hours
- Features: This route incorporates more challenging trekking elements with a slightly steeper incline, but it's conquerable for anyone with reasonable stamina. As you approach the summit, prepare to be amazed by the unfolding panoramic views – truly a sight to behold!

I opted for the intermediate route myself!
My goal was to reach the weather observation center, which you can spot in the distance from the blue circle, and I successfully completed it!
Please keep in mind that most of the photos shared today were taken along the intermediate route.
Best Time for Hiking in Hong Kong
The absolute best time to go is from October to March!

This period offers ideal temperatures and low humidity, making for the most comfortable and enjoyable hiking experience.
I personally went during mid-to-late November.
Starting then, the winds really picked up, and it became quite chilly as I ascended higher up the mountain.
So be sure to pack a warm jacket or outer layer.
When to Avoid Hiking in Hong Kong?

Summer (June to August) brings high temperatures and extremely high humidity, which significantly increases the risk of dehydration when hiking.
During the rainy season, the trails can be slippery, so please be careful.
And most importantly, there are hardly any restrooms along the hiking trails.
I don't recommend hiking in Hong Kong during the summer, as the heat leads to increased fluid intake!

What's the Charm of Tai Mo Shan for Hong Kong Hiking? What About Wildlife?

Tai Mo Shan, even taller than Hong Kong's highest buildings.
The expansive, open views are truly captivating.
While climbing, I wondered if I'd ever reach the top.
Once you reach the summit, home to a weather observation center, you can gaze out at the surrounding mountains, the city, and even the Hong Kong sea all at once.

As you walk the trail, you might come across some enormous cow dung.
You can encounter wild cows living in the mountains.
I didn't see any, but my companions said they did!
While they aren't aggressive, it's best not to get too close as they aren't very hygienic.
Hong Kong Hiking Pro Tips
1. Make use of public transportation!
If you're planning a Hong Kong hike, you'll need to travel quite a distance from the city center.
You can take a bus or taxi from Hong Kong city center to Tai Mo Shan Country Park.
Since the hiking course is quite substantial, it's best to use public transportation as much as possible rather than walking all the way to the starting point.
For the bus, you can take bus number 51 and alight at the Route Twisk Entrance.

You can also start from Chuen Lung bus stop, which is close to Tuen Kee Chinese Restaurant, a famous eatery introduced by Baek Jong-won.
You can get here by taking bus number 80 or by taxi.
For those planning to use public transportation, be sure to get an Octopus Card!
It's like Korea's T-money card and is a must-have for bus rides.

2. Physical fitness is a must!
There are benches and rest areas where you can take a break along the way.
As you ascend further, there won't be separate rest spots, so make sure to rest at the mid-slope of the mountain.
The course is quite long, at least 3 hours, so don't overdo it and ascend slowly.
3. Pay attention to your attire
You'll often need to climb over rocks, so pay attention to your clothing.
I highly recommend wearing long pants of decent thickness.
While a short-sleeved top is fine, bring an outer layer thicker than a zip-up hoodie, as it can get chilly when the wind blows.
Also, for those with sensitive hands, I recommend bringing gloves.
There are parts of the trail where you'll need to brace yourself on the ground, so gloves are essential if your hands are sensitive!
Hiking Tai Mo Shan: Such a joyful experience!

I felt like I climbed higher than I ever have in my life.
Tai Mo Shan is a special place where you can experience the beauty of nature and the energy of the city simultaneously.
I also recommend ending your day with a Hong Kong food tour after your hike.
Be sure to add it to your next Hong Kong travel itinerary!
