1. Location and First Impressions of the State Library of NSW
The State Library of NSW's location is
just a 5-minute walk from Martin Place Station,
making it really accessible when you're exploring the city center.
It's also very close to Hyde Park, St. Mary's Cathedral,
and the Royal Botanic Garden,
so it'll be easy to plan your route and combine it with other nearby attractions.

When you arrive at the entrance,
the first thing you'll see is a stylish, large-scale typography art piece made of steel.
Behind the metal lettering that reads 'State Library of NSW',
lush palm trees and green foliage blend beautifully,
making for a truly captivating first impression.
✓ Mitchell Library:
The elegant old wing on the left, built in a classic sandstone style
✓ Dixson Library:
The modern new building on the right, with its white-toned logo etched into the glass facade
They stand side-by-side,
creating a sense of past and present coexisting.
I also took a commemorative photo in front of the entrance art piece,
and happily headed inside.

2. Harry Potter-esque Library | Mitchell Reading Room
In the old Mitchell Reading Room,
you'll find a reading room that truly evokes Harry Potter vibes.
The moment I stepped inside,
I was completely overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the bookshelves,
packed from floor to ceiling.

Soft natural light poured into the room through the enormous grid-patterned glass ceiling,
and as I gazed at the classic multi-tiered bookshelves completely filling the walls,
I totally understood why it's famous for feeling like the Hogwarts Library.

I sat down for a moment to admire the ceiling and the bookshelves,
and noticed quite a few people around me reading or studying.
Just sitting down during a trip and doing nothing at all
felt incredibly good in itself.
If you go upstairs, you can see the reading room
from a different angle,
I recommend you take a look from below
and also explore it from above!

3. Free Permanent Exhibition | Sydney's History and Art
After exploring the reading rooms,
I ventured into the gallery located further down the corridor.
During my visit, I discovered portrait paintings,
early maps of Sydney, fascinating materials related to Indigenous culture,
and a collection of old documents and black-and-white photographs.

There were benches scattered throughout, perfect for a little break before
getting back up to slowly wander and admire everything. It was just lovely!

The descriptions were all in English.
If you find something that sparks your curiosity,
a quick phone translation of the description
could be a great way to dive deeper!

The very next day, on my Blue Mountains tour,
as I listened to our guide's explanations,
all the fascinating materials I'd seen at the library popped into my head!

If I had only heard the explanations, it might have felt a bit vague,
but recalling the maps and photos I’d seen at the library
truly connected the dots!

It was only meant to be a quick stop for a break,
but it ended up making my tour the next day so much more enjoyable and memorable!
4. State Library of NSW: Insider Tips!
✓ If you're carrying a large bag,
you can utilize the lockers.
Just keep in mind that bag entry rules might vary depending on which area you're in.
✓ The reading rooms are active study spaces, so
it's best to explore them quietly.
Plus, you can enjoy free Wi-Fi!
✓ Traveling with kids? A brief visit to the reading rooms followed by
exploring the exhibition halls to discover old maps or
photos together could be a fantastic plan!
Do note that exhibition content can change with the seasons.

If you find your legs aching from all the walking around Sydney's city center,
or if rain suddenly forces you indoors, definitely consider popping in for a visit!
If you're short on time, start with the Mitchell Reading Room.
But if you have the luxury of time, I highly recommend exploring all the way to the inner galleries as well!
