On the last day of my Sydney trip,
the wind was incredibly strong from early morning.
After changing my planned outdoor itinerary,
I quickly changed my plans and headed straight for
Art Gallery of New South Wales
Art Gallery of New South Wales

Honestly, I visited without much expectation,
but it unexpectedly became one of the most satisfying highlights
of my Sydney trip.
With an abundance of free exhibitions
and so much to explore, including captivating special exhibitions,
it was truly a place where one day just wasn't enough!

2. Museum Open Run! (Arriving Right at Opening)
I had an early brunch in the morning,
and then I even did an 'open run' at the museum, arriving right as it opened!
Upon arrival, the classic building and
the expansive lawn immediately caught my eye.
The weather was poor in the early morning,
but by the time I arrived at the museum, the sunlight was warm,
so I spread out the mat I brought,
took photos, and enjoyed some leisurely time.
Make sure to bring a mat!
It made for such a happy time.

The interior of the museum was even better.
From classical paintings to contemporary art,
Australian Indigenous art, and installation art,
I was able to see a diverse range of works.

Most of all, I loved the quiet atmosphere.
Throughout the trip, I had been busy moving around,
visiting famous tourist spots.
Here, however, I could spend time slowly
in front of the works that caught my eye.
My friends and I sometimes viewed works together,
and sometimes we explored different areas independently.
Although I also visited the paid special exhibition,
I honestly believe even the free exhibitions alone would have been incredibly satisfying.
3. René Magritte Paid Special Exhibition Review
When I visited,
a special exhibition for René Magritte (Rene Magritte)
was underway.

Honestly, before seeing the exhibition,
I didn't even really know who Magritte was.
But when I saw the artworks,
I realized they were paintings I'd seen somewhere before.
The works that uniquely expressed familiar objects
like clouds, sky, and hats were truly impressive.

Encountering the artworks in person
felt completely different from seeing them on a screen.
Even I, someone who doesn't know much about art, thoroughly enjoyed the viewing experience.

It was a paid special exhibition, but the admission fee felt absolutely worth it!
It felt like I was learning something new
on my journey, adding another layer to the travel experience.

※ The Magritte Special Exhibition is now closed.
It was amazing to stumble upon such a wonderful special exhibition
while traveling, and it felt even more meaningful
to experience artworks that are usually hard to access.
This unexpected experience felt
even more special, and it made me realize
that the joy of travel isn't
just about visiting new places.
2026 Special Exhibitions at Art Gallery of NSW
Beyond its permanent collection, the Art Gallery of NSW
also hosts a variety of special exhibitions.
Here's a breakdown of the main special exhibitions currently running as of October 2026,
along with upcoming shows.
Exhibition Name | Exhibition Period | Admission Fee |
Nolan: Origins | 2026.10.03~2027.02.07 | From AUD 30 |
And Still I Rise | ~2027.01.10 | Free |
Takashi Murakami | 2026.12.05~2027.07.18 | AUD 40-42 |
The exhibition I'm particularly eager to see is
the Takashi Murakami Special Exhibition,
starting on December 5th.

This exhibition marks Australia's first large-scale retrospective for the artist,
featuring paintings, sculptures, and large-scale installations,
as well as new works.

The Magritte exhibition was fantastic, but with the Takashi Murakami exhibition opening too,
it really makes me want to visit Sydney again!
You can also book special exhibition tickets through Klook,
so be sure to check what exhibitions are running
on your planned visit date.

There are options like the 'Australian Art Story Tour'
including Takashi Murakami exhibition tickets,
and also tickets for the Sydney Nolan: Origins exhibition,
but I highly recommend getting a special exhibition admission ticket!
If you book through Klook,
you won't have to queue to buy tickets,
and you can enter immediately by just showing your QR code.
5. Why I Recommend the Art Gallery of NSW
After my visit, I also stopped by the souvenir shop.
We each bought a keychain,
and attached it to our car keys.
Even now, every time I see it, it reminds me of our Sydney trip.

My only regret was the limited time we had for viewing.
Since it was the last day of our trip and we had another schedule,
we had to rush out.
Because of its immense size and countless attractions,
I truly felt that even a full day wouldn't be enough.
If I get to visit again,
I'd love to spend one day leisurely exploring the free exhibitions,
and another day enjoying a special exhibition.

If you're looking for a great spot to visit on a rainy day in Sydney,
or simply want to spend some quiet time,
I highly recommend the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
Even for someone like me, who isn't an art expert,
it was a space that could be thoroughly enjoyed.
