However, here's a major tip: if you buy your iPhone at an official Apple Store in the city and claim a TRS tax refund at the airport, you'll save about 9% to 10%! Definitely buy in the city instead of the airport if you want the best deal.

1. Whisky, Wine & Spirits: Buy at Duty-Free!

If you're looking to buy alcohol, the duty-free shop is your absolute best bet. Australia imposes high taxes on alcohol based on its alcohol by volume (ABV). This means high-proof spirits are significantly cheaper at duty-free than in city bottle shops. (Plus, you can't easily claim a standard TRS tax refund on alcohol purchased outside if the bottles are opened or packed in checked bags incorrectly.)

Look out for airport-exclusive limited editions too, which make fantastic gifts for collectors.

Penfolds wines are highly popular, and they also have premium Japanese whiskies if you're a spirits enthusiast.

You can also grab cute mini-bottles for around $7 USD, which make perfect, budget-friendly gifts.

2. Koala & Kangaroo Plushies

You'll find plenty of adorable Australian wildlife plushies at the airport.

However, the prices here are drastically higher than at Paddy's Market or city souvenir stalls. Airport plushies range from $13 to $34 USD each.

A single koala keyring costs about $7 USD at the airport, whereas you can find them for just $2 USD at Paddy's Market!

A koala and kangaroo keyring set is priced at $9 USD at the airport, but only $3 USD at Paddy's Market.

While the airport versions might feel slightly softer or have better finishing, Paddy's Market is the clear winner for budget-friendly souvenir shopping.

3. Ugg Boots

If you didn't have time to buy Ugg boots in the city, the airport is your final opportunity.

The duty-free shop mostly carries classic boot styles, so don't expect a wide variety of trendy designs like platforms or Mary Janes.

Basic slippers were on sale for around $60 USD, and they had decent size availability. If you want the latest fashionable styles, buy them in the city beforehand.

4. T2 Tea

T2 is Australia's signature premium tea brand, famous for its gorgeous, vibrant packaging that makes it a beautiful gift. It's an incredibly popular souvenir item.

At the airport, a standard paper box of tea is priced at $15 USD, which is exactly the same as in-store retail prices in the city. There's no duty-free discount here, and the airport selection is quite limited compared to their flagship stores.

5. Vitamins & Supplements

Famous Australian supplement brands like Blackmores and Swisse are readily available at the airport. However, I highly recommend buying these in the city at Chemist Warehouse or local pharmacies instead.

These local stores frequently run massive 50% off sales, making them incredibly cheap. For instance, a 60-tablet bottle of Swisse Zinc that costs $6 USD in the city was priced at $10 USD at the airport. Sleep and magnesium products with no discounts were almost double the price at the airport.

Blackmores Lutein was about $3 USD cheaper than standard retail, but still more expensive than what you'd pay during a Chemist Warehouse promotion.

6. Lucas' Papaw Ointment

This multi-purpose ointment is an absolute staple in Australia. You can find it at any supermarket, pharmacy, or market.

At the airport, a 6-pack was priced at a whopping $31 USD, which is much more expensive than buying individual tubes or bulk packs in the city. For the best value, stock up at a local supermarket before heading to the airport.

Sydney Airport Tax Refund (TRS) Guide

If you did a lot of shopping in the city during your Sydney trip, you can claim a tax refund at the airport. If you spend AUD 300 (approx. $200 USD) or more at a single retailer, you're eligible for a refund of up to 10% on GST. Just make sure to check the rules!

Note that items purchased directly at duty-free shops are already tax-exempt, so they do not qualify for additional TRS refunds.
