Nagano Lake Suwa View Ryokan 'Suwakoen'
A Genuine Review from Rooms to Hot Springs!
ⓒ Written & Photographed by Ttakugi 2026
Hello! I'm Ttakugi.
Lately, so many travelers are looking to escape the bustling big cities
and find peaceful, quaint small towns in Japan
for their next getaway.

So today, I'm sharing my review of a lake-view stay
at a hidden gem in Nagano Prefecture that I recently visited and completely fell in love with—
located right by the beautiful Lake Suwa (SUWAKOEN)!
It's none other than 'Suwakoen.'
With its serene lake views,
it's absolutely perfect for couples looking for a quiet healing trip
or families traveling with parents!
I highly, highly recommend it!

At around ~$100 to ~$115 a night,
it's an incredibly budget-friendly ryokan.
While there are many high-end, pricey
ryokans nearby,
Suwakoen stood out as an amazing value-for-money option.

✔️ Route & Transportation Tips
By Train:
After getting off at JR Kamisuwa Station,
it's easily accessible by taxi or a short walk.
Lake Suwa & Neighborhood
Lake Suwa has a circumference of about 16 km (approx. 10 miles),
offering a charming yet wide-open landscape that is absolutely captivating.

✔️Jogging & Walking Nearby:
The lake size is just perfect,
so if you love jogging or running,
it's a great spot to complete a full loop!
I also woke up early in the morning
and took a light stroll along the lake.
Watching the sparkling sunlight reflect on the water was pure healing.

✔️Nearby Attractions
Right near the accommodation, there's the 'Geyser Center'
where you can watch hot spring water erupt first-hand,
making it a great spot to check out before or after check-out.

Exterior

We visited using a rental car,
and we loved that there was plenty of parking space right in front of the hotel.

📍 Lobby & Check-in

As soon as we arrived,
the warm and peaceful exterior, unique to Japan's small towns,
caught my eye.
It carried a classic vintage charm
while being impeccably maintained.

When we stepped into the lobby,
the staff welcomed us with genuine warmth.
English wasn't very widely spoken, but...
If you speak Japanese, it'll probably be super convenient,
but I got by just fine using a translator app! haha
Check-in was quick and easy,
and they were so helpful with guiding us on luggage storage,
making a fantastic first impression.

There was also a small corner in the lobby where you could buy cute souvenirs.
📍 Room Review (Room Condition)
Time to head to the room!
The moment we opened the door,
the serene view of Lake Suwa unfolding outside the window
was absolutely breathtaking.

Since I was traveling with my parents,
I booked a full lake view room for them,
and a partial (side) lake view room for us! haha
✔️ Cozy Bedding
The bedding at Suwakoyen was so incredibly cozy
that I fell asleep in no time.

Everything was spotlessly clean.
The futon mattress they laid out on the floor
was remarkably thick!
Thanks to that, I didn't feel the hard floor at all—
it felt just as plush and comfortable as a real bed, and I slept like a baby.

✔️ Room Layout
There was no separate shower in the room!
But as most of you probably know,
even when ryokan rooms do have showers,
you rarely end up using them, right?

Since you usually head down to the public bath (onsen) anyway
to wash up and enjoy a hot spring soak,
we didn't experience the slightest bit of inconvenience during our stay.
It was also incredibly quiet and peaceful,
letting us completely focus on relaxing.
📍 Facilities (Cozy Onsen & Free Perks)
The absolute highlight of any ryokan trip has to be the hot springs, right? ♨️

✔️ Hot Spring (Public Bath)
The onsen at Suwakoyen isn't massive
in size,
but that actually makes it feel incredibly cozy
and private.

Best of all, it wasn't crowded with guests,
so we could enjoy a quiet, pleasant soak as if we had rented out the whole place.
It was absolutely wonderful.
All our built-up fatigue just melted away.
✔️ Pro-Tip for Free Perks
In the morning, they offer free warm coffee
in the lobby!

Stepping out after a peaceful, early morning soak
and savoring a warm cup of coffee...
It was pure bliss,
so make sure you don't miss out on this when you visit!

📍 Price Comparison & Booking Tips
For this trip, I meticulously compared various travel platforms
before making my booking.

Even for a ryokan in a small town,
getting this kind of lake view and hot spring quality
for around the ~$64 to ~$128 range
offers incredible value for money!
For a stay in June, it looks to be in the early ~$128 range.
✅ June Booking Price
Booking Platform | Average Price Range | Booking Link |
Agoda | ~$141~ | |
Booking.com | ~$140~ | |
Trip.com | ~$147~ |

of about 150 JPY per person.
It's super cheap, so no need to worry about it!

📍 Local Sightseeing Tips
For a great place to visit right after you check out,
I highly recommend the 'TSURUYA' Supermarket!
This is a famous local grocery store chain exclusive to the Nagano area.

Once you step inside, you'll find
a variety of exclusive, limited-edition items made from local specialties,
like apple or peach jams, juices, and desserts
that you can only buy here!

Seriously, there's no better place than this
to pick up unique souvenirs and gifts for your friends back home.
Wrapping Up
That concludes my stay at Hotel Suwakoen,
where I got to soak in cozy hot springs overlooking the sparkling Lake Suwa, and indulge in sweet local fruits.

If you want to experience the authentic charm of a small Japanese town,
you should absolutely add this place to your travel list!
