If you've ever searched for Kyoto travel inspiration, you've likely stumbled upon a particular Starbucks.

Famed as the 'Tatami Starbucks,' it's a frequent sight in Kyoto travel reviews and across social media.

On a previous trip to Kyoto, I tried to visit but gave up due to the overwhelming crowds.

This time, I decided to tackle it early in the morning before the tourist rush. After visiting Kiyomizu-dera Temple, I headed down the path and gave it another shot.

Easy to Miss: The Starbucks Without a Sign

Descending from Kiyomizu-dera Temple and following the signs towards Ninenzaka, you'll naturally arrive.

Typically, Starbucks' green siren logo is visible from afar, but this location perfectly maintains the exterior of a traditional Kyoto townhouse. Its subtle signage makes it incredibly easy to walk right past.

First-time visitors might even wonder, 'Is this really a Starbucks?' I loved how seamlessly it blends into Kyoto's historic streets.

Grab Your Seat Before Ordering

We arrived around 9:30 AM on a weekday and, thankfully, there were still open seats.

Upon entering, the counter was right there, and as I was about to order, a staff member kindly advised us to find a seat first.

Since seating is limited, if you plan to enjoy your drinks inside, the system here requires you to head upstairs to the second floor, secure a spot, and then return to the counter to place your order.

The Second Floor: Featuring Tatami Seating

Upstairs on the second floor, you'll find both traditional tatami mat seating, where you remove your shoes, and conventional wooden tables.

Fortunately, there were available seats when we visited, so we settled into a table.

Outside the window, Ninenzaka Street unfolds, while inside, the original wooden pillars and traditional house structure remain, creating an atmosphere unlike any ordinary cafe.

To preserve the traditional house structure, the space isn't an open-plan layout where you can see the entire store at once. Instead, rooms connect via narrow corridors.

Both the first and second floors retain these corridors, making the process of ordering and picking up your drink feel less like a typical cafe run and more like exploring an ancient dwelling.

While the layout might seem less efficient than a standard Starbucks, it encourages you to slowly take in the surroundings, naturally immersing you in the traditional Kyoto townhouse ambiance created by the aged wood and tatami mats.

Matcha Latte in Kyoto

Initially, I planned to stick to my usual espresso or iced Americano for a caffeine boost.

But then it struck me that having regular coffee at this Kyoto Starbucks would be a missed opportunity.

So, I ordered a matcha latte, something I rarely drink, while my travel companion opted for an iced Americano and a matcha cake.

Honestly, the drinks and cake weren't anything extraordinary, but I realized people come here for the unique atmosphere, not just the menu.
