Discover Hokuto Kyoto, an affordable sukiyaki lunch spot near Nishiki Market. Enjoy an authentic individual hot pot set for around ~$8, perfect for solo diners or groups.
It was my last full day exploring Kyoto back in 2026.
With plans to head to Osaka the following day, I packed my schedule tight, eager to soak in every last bit of Kyoto's charm.
After a morning whirlwind tour of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Yasaka Shrine, Chion-in Temple, and Nijo Castle, it was well past 1:00 PM.
My original plan was to grab lunch at Sukemasa, a highly-rated gyoza spot near Nijo Castle, but I only realized later that their lunch service closed at 2:00 PM...
With time ticking, I started searching for a restaurant near my next destination, the Kyoto Art Center. That's when the idea of trying sukiyaki for the first time popped into my head!
This led me to Taishu Sukiyaki Hokuto Shijo Karasuma Branch, conveniently located near Karasuma Station.

A Budget-Friendly Sukiyaki Gem Near Nishiki Market
Hokuto is situated close to Karasuma Station, just about a 5-minute walk (roughly 0.12 miles) from Nishiki Market.
It's perfectly placed for a delicious lunch after exploring Nishiki Market, or if you're heading towards Kawaramachi or the Kyoto Art Center.
We arrived around 2:20 PM.
I was a bit worried we might not be seated since lunch service ended at 3:00 PM, but a staff member kindly asked, "Lunch service ends at 3 PM, is that okay?"
We confirmed it was fine and were immediately shown to our table.
There was no wait, and since it was late in the lunch hour, the restaurant was pleasantly quiet.
An Amazing Value Lunch Set for 1,298 yen
We opted for the most basic sukiyaki set on the menu.
The price, including tax, was 1,298 yen. The larger size, with more meat, was 1,738 yen.
Each set comes with sukiyaki, a raw egg for dipping, rice, and soup.
When traveling in Japan, you sometimes find that menu prices seem low, but then rice or eggs are extra. It was a pleasant surprise that Hokuto's set included everything from the start.
For most women, the standard size is perfectly satisfying.
However, if you're an adult male or simply want a more generous portion of meat, I'd recommend upgrading to the large size.
While the standard portion didn't feel small, those with a bigger appetite might wish for a little more.
Authentic Sukiyaki Served in Individual Pots

Shortly after ordering, the gas burner, rice, and soup arrived, followed by the sukiyaki pot about 5 minutes later.
What I loved was that it came in individual pots for each person.
Unlike hot pot or shabu-shabu, where everyone shares a single pot, this setup allowed us to cook and eat at our own pace.
It's perfect for dining with companions, but also incredibly convenient if you're a solo traveler looking for a satisfying meal.
The cooking method was also a bit different from typical shabu-shabu;
Instead of briefly dipping ingredients in broth, you simmer the meat and vegetables in the flavorful sukiyaki sauce until they're tender and delicious.
No Japanese? No Problem! English Cooking Guide Available

Hokuto provides English menus, and while the staff may not speak Korean, their basic English was more than enough for smooth communication.
Each table also has an illustrated English cooking guide, making it incredibly easy to prepare your sukiyaki just right.
The restaurant's recommended ratio is two rotations of soy sauce and one spoonful of sugar, but you can easily adjust it to your personal preference.
I prefer lighter flavors, so I used a bit less soy sauce, while my companion followed the recommended ratio.
The Surprisingly Delicious Raw Egg Dip
As someone who rarely eats raw eggs, I was a little hesitant at first.
However, I was pleasantly surprised—there was almost no fishy taste whatsoever!
Dipping the savory-sweet simmered beef into the raw egg adds a delightful creaminess and mellows the flavor beautifully.
I started eating without the egg, but by the end, it felt incomplete without that rich, smooth dip!
While sukiyaki isn't made with extravagant ingredients, it's the kind of dish that keeps you reaching for more.
Plus, having the gas burner on throughout the meal meant our sukiyaki stayed warm and delicious until the very last bite, which was a huge plus.
