On my previous Kyoto trip, I stayed at Rakuten STAY Kyoto Shijo-Kawaramachi. This area is a fantastic base because it puts you right in the heart of where most travelers explore: Kawaramachi, Nishiki Market, Gion, and Kiyomizu-dera Temple. All these iconic spots are either within easy walking distance or just a short bus ride away, making exploration incredibly convenient.
One of the biggest perks was the ability to pop back to the hotel for a break. If I was out exploring in the morning and felt too hot or my feet started aching, I could easily return to the hotel to rest before heading out again. This was a game-changer, especially because Kyoto's summer can be surprisingly hot and humid, draining your energy quickly after just a few hours of walking.
I actually did this once during the day – came back, changed clothes, enjoyed the air conditioning, and then felt refreshed enough to go back out. Plus, having a small grocery store right next to the hotel was a bonus, making it super easy to grab a late-night beer or snacks.
However, there were a couple of downsides.
After taking the subway from Kyoto Station to Kawaramachi Station, the final walk to the hotel with my luggage was unexpectedly challenging. The streets in this area often have cobblestones or uneven paths, which are not ideal for rolling a suitcase.
While it is possible to travel to Osaka from here, taking the train during evening rush hour, when local commuters and tourists are all packed together, was quite uncomfortable, especially with luggage.
Despite these minor inconveniences, the advantage of "traveling from the heart of Kyoto" was undeniable.

2. Kyoto Station Accommodation Review

For my most recent trip to Kyoto, I opted for the Almont Hotel Kyoto. This time, my itinerary included frequent back-and-forth travel between Osaka and Kyoto, so choosing a hotel near Kyoto Station was a no-brainer. And the verdict? The convenience of movement was absolutely superior.
From Osaka Station, you can hop on a JR Special Rapid train and arrive at Kyoto Station in just 30 minutes, no transfers needed. Plus, even with luggage, you can step right out of Kyoto Station and easily drop your bags at the hotel, eliminating almost all travel stress.
Beyond the transport, the area around Kyoto Station boasts fantastic amenities. The station's underground dining area is huge, and with a large Aeon Mall within walking distance, you can sort out meals and shopping without needing to venture into the more crowded tourist spots.
On days when I was simply too tired, spending time inside Aeon Mall—grabbing a meal and browsing the supermarket—was a perfectly satisfying way to unwind before heading back to the hotel.
The room size at Almont Hotel Kyoto was also noticeably more spacious than what I experienced in the Kawaramachi area. I could easily open my suitcase and still have plenty of room to move around, making unpacking and repacking a breeze.
As evening falls, the area around Kyoto Station transforms into a calm and orderly atmosphere, a stark contrast to the bustling Kawaramachi. I distinctly remember walking back after dinner, stopping at a convenience store, and enjoying the illuminated Kyoto Tower. Those quiet moments truly stuck with me.

Almont Hotel Kyoto is conveniently located about a 5-7 minute walk from Kyoto Station, making travel between Osaka and Kyoto easy. The room sizes are more generous than those in the Kawaramachi area, and it offers good access to nearby amenities like the Kyoto Station underground dining district and a large Aeon Mall.
