I stumbled upon it by chance this year while exploring downtown Kyoto with my child. It’s a place that satisfies both adults and kids, and with glowing reviews from both locals and tourists, we knew we had to head there for dinner!
Famous for its signature King Kong Rice, this Kyoto eatery truly impressed. I'm excited to share all the details, from our waiting experience to menu prices and our family's honest review!

Located right in the heart of Kyoto, it's easily accessible by public transportation or on foot.
It’s conveniently close to Hankyu Omiya Station and San-in Main Line Omiya Station.

It's also not far from Kyoto Station, making it a perfect spot for a casual dinner after a day of city sightseeing.
It's about a 10-15 minute walk to Nishiki Market and a 30-minute walk to Gion District.
The restaurant operates with separate lunch and dinner hours. Keep in mind that they might close early if ingredients run out, so it's always a good idea to check their official channels or Google Maps for the exact operating hours on the day of your visit.

Waiting Tips
Niku Shokudo is a popular Kyoto restaurant that doesn't take reservations. Hearing there might be a wait, we intentionally visited after the peak dinner rush. Luckily, our family was seated right away!
The turnover rate is quite fast, so even if there's a line, you'll likely get in sooner than you think.

What was the Atmosphere Like?
Instead of a quiet, atmospheric, or trendy spot, it had a casual vibe. It was a bit bustling due to the crowd, but it felt like a lively, energetic eatery!
If you're dining with a very young infant, it might feel a bit inconvenient. They don't have high chairs, so keep that in mind if you're planning to visit with a baby.
My child, being in elementary school, enjoyed dinner without any issues.

Our King Kong Rice Review
Niku Shokudo's flagship dish is the King Kong Rice, featuring richly stewed beef tendon.
The signature King Kong Rice, with its generous pile of meat, rice, and special sauce, was visually stunning.

The price point felt incredibly reasonable for both the quality and quantity, offering great value for money. For any traveler who appreciates a hearty meal, this King Kong Rice is an absolute must-try!
The tender beef piled high on the rice, perfectly complemented by the savory special sauce, made for an unforgettable bite. Even my child loved the meat, finding it tender and delicious!
Beyond rice bowls, they also offer various set meals and even full-fledged steaks, so there's plenty to choose from to suit any preference.
If we hadn't been so full, we definitely would have ordered a few more of Niku Shokudo's steaks!

Are there many international visitors?
When our family visited, we didn't see any other international guests.
However, seeing some English notices around made it clear that Niku Shokudo is a popular spot for international travelers in downtown Kyoto.
Thanks to this, ordering was a breeze, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, making our family meal a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

We recommend this place for:

▶Travelers who find typical Japanese restaurant portions a bit small and crave a substantial meal.
▶Foodies looking for a generous and delicious rice bowl in Kyoto.
▶Families with children who prefer a budget-friendly local eatery.
If you're looking to enjoy high-quality meat dishes in a casual, lively atmosphere, this place is definitely for you.
To avoid long waits, we recommend visiting slightly outside of peak meal times!

The area around the restaurant is close to downtown Kyoto and on a main street, so it felt safe even late at night. Just something to keep in mind!
