While Dubrovnik gets a lot of the spotlight, Croatia is packed with incredible coastal gems. Among them, Split, Croatia 🇭🇷 remains one of my absolute favorites.

With the peak travel season kicking off in June, now is the perfect time to start planning your itinerary. Here is a curated guide to exploring the Old Town, along with an excellent budget-friendly accommodation option.

1. Split Croatia Travel

While Plitvice Lakes and Dubrovnik are must-visit spots, Split offers an entirely different, laid-back charm that shouldn't be missed.

It serves as the ultimate hub for travelers, especially if you love swimming and sunbathing. You can easily catch a ferry to the nearby island of Hvar for a perfect beach day. 🏖️

2. Diocletian's Palace & Old Town

The defining feature of Split is Diocletian's Palace. Unlike traditional museums, this is a living, breathing UNESCO World Heritage site.

Local residents still live within the ancient Roman walls, where bustling restaurants, cozy cafes, and boutique shops are seamlessly integrated into the historic ruins.

Wandering through the maze of narrow stone alleys, you will spot laundry hanging overhead and tiny cafes tucked into hidden corners.

It offers a completely unique atmosphere that feels distinct from typical European tourist hubs, making it incredibly memorable.

3. Riva Promenade

Just outside the palace walls lies the sun-drenched Riva Promenade, lined with towering palm trees and overlooking the deep blue Adriatic Sea. 🌴

Often called "the city's living room" by locals, this waterfront stretch is the ultimate gathering spot for coffee, people-watching, and soaking in the coastal breeze.

4. The Silver Gate (East Gate)

In Roman times, Diocletian's Palace was guarded by four main gates: Golden, Silver, Bronze, and Iron. The East Gate served as a vital thoroughfare connecting the palace to the rest of the Adriatic coast.

Also known as the Silver Gate, it remains one of the busiest entry points used by locals today.

5. Gregory of Nin Statue

Just outside the Golden Gate stands the colossal statue of Gregory of Nin. You will immediately notice that his left big toe is polished to a bright, golden shine.

Legend has it that rubbing his toe brings good luck and guarantees you will return to Split one day. Naturally, I had to give it a rub! ʕ·ᴥ·ʔ

6. Day Trip to Hvar Island

If you want to experience the vibrant Mediterranean lifestyle, take a trip to Hvar Island. It is a fantastic spot for swimming, exploring historic fortresses, and enjoying beachside cafes.

The island is just a scenic 1-hour ferry ride away from Split harbor, making it incredibly easy to visit as a day trip. (Just make sure to pack plenty of sunscreen, as the summer sun can be intense!)

The climb up to the Spanish Fortress (Fortica) rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views of the harbor and the Pakleni Islands. The winding walk through the town's stone alleys to get up there is equally charming.

7. Where to Stay in Split: Budget Recommendation

Villa Spalatina

If you are looking for a highly cost-effective place to stay, I highly recommend this spot located just a 10-minute walk (about 0.5 miles) from Split Old Town.

With rates averaging around ~$64 per night, it offers incredible value for the location. It also features a spacious, free parking lot, which is a massive bonus if you are planning a Croatia road trip with a rental car.

The apartment comes equipped with a small kitchenette for basic cooking, and it even has a washing machine, which is incredibly convenient for mid-trip laundry.

The layout features a separate bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen/living area, making the entire space feel wonderfully roomy.
