When you're planning a trip to Shanghai, popular tourist spots like Disneyland, The Bund,
and Yu Garden are easy to find.
But while I was searching for a more unique experience,
I accidentally discovered a performance
that turned out to be Sleep No More.
There weren't many reviews, so I hesitated before booking,
but after the show, it became
the most memorable highlight of my trip.
Today, I've put together a detailed Sleep No More Shanghai review, covering show features,

What is Sleep No More Shanghai?
Sleep No More is an immersive theater production created by Punchdrunk, a world-renowned performance company from the UK.
It's a fresh reinterpretation of Shakespeare's classic work,
Macbeth,
and it gained immense popularity in London, New York, and Boston.
Shanghai is the only city in Asia
where you can experience this captivating performance.
Its popularity is so high that it has been performed over 1,600 times,
establishing itself as a signature performance of Shanghai.
It's also famous as a unique experience that
travelers definitely want to try at least once.
Sleep No More Show Features
Sleep No More isn't like a typical play
where you sit in an audience seat and watch the stage.
It's an immersive theater experience where you freely roam
through the vast McKinnon Hotel, created with a 1930s backdrop,
and watch the performance unfold around you.
The five-story space features over 90 rooms
and thousands of props.
All audience members wear white masks,
and they can either follow the actors or freely explore
any area they wish.
The scenes you witness change depending on who you follow
and which spaces you choose to linger in.
Even if you attend the same performance multiple times, you can experience new stories,
and this is its greatest charm.

Immersion Starts Even Before the Show
Sleep No More sets a unique mood
from the very moment you step into the venue.
Instead of the show starting immediately,
you wait your turn at a bar with live music,
sipping on a drink.
(One drink is included with your admission ticket)
From this moment, you naturally
become immersed in the show's world.
After exchanging your ticket, you'll receive a card with an alphabet letter,
and when your letter is called,
you'll enter the performance venue in order.
This was a time when excitement and
anticipation steadily built up even before the show began.
Sleep No More Showtimes and Prices
Sleep No More has two performances daily,
with regular closures on Mondays and Tuesdays.

What if I don't know Chinese?
When you think of a performance in Shanghai,
many people's first concern is often the language barrier.
However, Sleep No More is a performance that you can
fully enjoy even if you don't know any Chinese.
This is because it's not a dialogue-driven play,
but rather a story that unfolds through the actors' expressions and gestures, music, lighting, and spatial direction alone.
In fact, even for us who couldn't speak any Chinese,
we were able to naturally follow the flow and emotions of the performance, and had no significant difficulty understanding the content.
Instead, the experience of encountering the actors right in front of us
and directly exploring the space was so much more intense
that the language barrier hardly felt like an issue.

My Honest Review of Sleep No More
Before seeing the show, I was worried it might be physically tiring
since it involves a lot of walking.
However, once the performance began, those worries quickly vanished.
First, it was indoors, so the air conditioning kept it cool,
and as I followed the actors, going up and down stairs and exploring various spaces,
time truly flew by.
Of course, since there's a lot of movement involved in the show,
it's definitely a good idea to wear comfortable sneakers.
But the immersion was beyond my expectations.
There are many scenes where actors perform right in front of your eyes,
and the distance between the audience and the actors is very close.
I felt a tension that is difficult to experience
in a typical performance.
If I ever visit Shanghai again,
this is the first thing I'd want to book.
