After a fantastic day at Bird Paradise, we hopped on the Mandai shuttle to the Night Safari. It's a quick 5-10 minute ride. Honestly, I initially thought a night zoo might be a bit tame for adults, but I was completely wrong! The thrill of seeing majestic predators without traditional cages, separated only by natural barriers, is an experience far superior to any daytime zoo visit.

1. Night Safari Essential Information

Operating Hours: Daily 6:30 PM - 12:00 AM (Last entry at 11:15 PM)

Adult Admission: SGD 53-55. Timed entry booking is essential.

Available entry slots are 7:15 PM, 8:15 PM, 9:15 PM, and 10:15 PM.

Popular time slots sell out quickly, so make sure to book in advance. I ended up with the 9:45 PM slot because I booked late. If you want an earlier time, secure your tickets early!

2. Start with the Walking Trails Upon Arrival

Upon entry, I highly recommend starting with the walking trails. This helps you avoid the initial rush for the tram. There are four interconnected walking trails:

Leopard Trail: Spot leopards, lions, civets, and bats.

Pangolin Trail: Discover pangolins, otters, fishing cats, and slow lorises.

East Lodge Trail: Encounter Malayan tigers, hyenas, and aardvarks.

Tasmanian Devil Trail: See wallabies and Tasmanian devils.

Note that some animals are exclusive to the walking trails, while others are best viewed from the tram.

3. My Walking Trail Experience

Walking through the darkness truly felt like a jungle expedition. The animals are separated by natural barriers like moats and dense foliage, not confining cages. Imagine seeing a lion just a few yards away, lounging in the night! It's both thrilling and a little eerie, with the darkness adding to the suspense.

Personally, the most impressive spot was the large lake near the rhinoceros enclosure. While I didn't spot a rhino, the surrounding scenery was otherworldly. The fog and dim light created an ethereal atmosphere, like a desktop wallpaper come to life. It's a view that photos simply can't capture.

4. Tram Ride Through 6 Zones

After completing the walking trails, we boarded the tram. Your admission ticket includes one complimentary tram ride. For about 40 minutes, the tram takes you through six distinct geographical zones, including the Himalayan Foothills, Indian Subcontinent, and African Savanna, all with engaging English audio commentary. You'll pass right by large animals like elephants, giraffes, and zebras. Seeing elephants at night is a totally different experience than during the day. It feels like you're getting a genuine glimpse into their nocturnal routines, with some animals sleeping peacefully and others actively roaming.

5. Animal Show - Creatures of the Night

The Night Safari also features an animal show, the 'Creatures of the Night'.

Showtimes: 7:30 PM, 8:30 PM, 9:30 PM

This 20-25 minute performance showcases the natural behaviors of nocturnal animals like otters and civets.

Unfortunately, I missed it due to my late entry slot, but if you enter earlier, I highly recommend checking it out. There's also a 'Twilight Performance' (LED light show) held at the entrance plaza at 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM.

6. Heading Home - A Crucial Tip

Since I had the last entry slot, it was quite late by the time we finished. Here’s a vital tip: the last shuttle bus can be missed if you stay too late. The Mandai shuttle operates until midnight, and I barely missed it, ending up taking a Grab (ride-sharing service) back. Catching a Grab from Mandai late at night can be tricky, with fewer cars available and surge pricing often applied. While the late-night thrill is undeniable, it's smarter to book an earlier slot if you want to avoid transportation headaches and extra Grab fees.

For your information, if you take the shuttle to Khatib MRT Station, there's a dining area nearby, perfect for a late dinner. There's also a large shopping mall just one stop further if you prefer more options.

Quick Tips for Your Night Safari Adventure

Book your timed entry slot as early as possible for the widest selection of times. Popular slots fill up fast!

Start with the walking trails, then take the tram. This helps avoid crowds and allows you to see a greater variety of animals.

Mosquitoes are plentiful, so insect repellent is a must.

You'll be doing a fair amount of walking, so wear comfortable shoes.

Always use the restroom when you see one!

Beware of the last shuttle bus if you have a late entry slot. Plan to leave with ample time to save on Grab fares.
