Z Hotel Shanghai: Unbeatable Oriental Pearl Views

Stumbled upon Z Hotel on social media and immediately knew I had to experience its iconic view for myself! It was an instant "I need to take photos here!" moment, and I wasted no time booking my stay at Z Hotel Shanghai.

The terrace view with the Oriental Pearl Tower as a backdrop? Absolutely breathtaking! I just had to capture that moment myself. Since detailed reviews for Z Hotel are a bit scarce, I'm here to give you the full scoop on what to expect!
Shanghai Z Hotel with Oriental Pearl View
Location, Location, Location

Z Hotel Shanghai isn't directly on the bustling Nanjing Road, a popular spot for many tourists. Instead, it’s nestled slightly north, offering a more serene vibe while still being incredibly accessible – just about a 10-minute stroll from the iconic Bund.
Getting there from Pudong International Airport (PVG) took around 40 minutes, and a Didi Premium taxi cost approximately ~$24.

First Impressions: Exterior & Lobby

Z Hotel Shanghai exudes a charming European vibe, housed in what appears to be a beautifully remodeled historic building. Unlike many standard hotels, it feels more casual and vibrant, attracting a younger, more dynamic crowd. I noticed a good mix of international travelers and local Chinese guests enjoying the unique ambiance.

We took a quaint, European-style elevator up to the reception area, which shares its space with a lovely restaurant. Word on the street is, you can even catch glimpses of the Oriental Pearl Tower from the restaurant’s terrace!

There was also a curious space on the third floor; I wasn't quite sure of its purpose, but there was always a staff member present.
Choosing Your Perfect Room

My main goal was to capture that iconic shot with the Oriental Pearl Tower, so a terrace room was a must. I discovered that Z Hotel offers two types of terrace rooms: some boast a spacious terrace with chairs and a table, while others have a much narrower balcony, sans seating!
I specifically booked the "Bund View Terrace Double Bed Room". Initially, I was given one of the narrower terrace rooms. A quick trip to the lobby, showing them a photo of the terrace I envisioned (with chairs and a table!), and they graciously moved me to a different room. The layout was identical, just a change in floor (from the 6th floor to the 3rd).
If you're aiming for that perfect photo op with a proper terrace setup, I highly recommend adding a note to your booking request for a room with chairs and a table!

Just a heads-up: while the "City View Double Bed Room (Terrace)" might have a similar layout, it's not marketed as a landmark view. This means there's a good chance the Oriental Pearl Tower won't be visible from its terrace.
Inside My Z Hotel Room

The room itself is on the cozier side. While a carry-on suitcase could be opened with ease, I found it a bit of a squeeze to fully unpack my 25-inch luggage.

The bathroom featured a clever, compact design, even with a unique mirror that you had to open to fully utilize. As a 4-star establishment, Z Hotel didn't skimp on amenities, providing luxurious Le Labo brand shampoo, conditioner, and body wash.
You'll find all the essentials, including disposable toothbrushes, toothpaste, comfy slippers, and even drip coffee. The room's aesthetic is clean and minimalist, focusing on functionality. Overall, it felt impeccably clean and well-maintained!

A quirky detail: the toilet flush button was located unusually low. My only minor gripe was that while one side offered the stunning Oriental Pearl view, the opposite side faced a construction site. Though I personally didn't experience much noise, it's worth noting that earplugs were thoughtfully provided in the room.
Tips for Booking Your Stay

Just like my previous stay at the Conrad, I booked Z Hotel Shanghai via Trip.com. It's consistently my go-to platform for travel within China, offering a fantastic selection and competitive deals.
They have a vast selection of hotels and frequently run promotions. Plus, applying a 3% discount code can really add up! After your stay, Trip Coins are automatically credited, and you earn even more for writing a review – perfect for future bookings. As you can see from my photos, the Trip Coin earning potential is pretty generous!

After I submitted my review, Z Hotel even surprised me with a thoughtful souvenir!
While Z Hotel Shanghai might be more compact than some other city hotels – you could potentially find a more spacious 5-star option for a similar price – it truly shines for a specific experience. I'd highly recommend it for a one-night stay, especially if your goal is to capture those incredible, Instagram-worthy photos with the Oriental Pearl Tower. For me, getting those stunning shots made it absolutely worth it! ★
