Honestly, my initial reason for visiting Yuyuan Garden was to try the popular 'Wanghong' (internet celebrity) experience in Shanghai.

I figured I'd explore the garden while I was there. However, on the day of my reservation, the vendor informed me that due to the Lantern Festival, I'd need to purchase an 80 yuan ticket for entry.

This was an unexpected ~$12 expense, plus it was raining, so I worried I wouldn't get to fully enjoy it.

But once inside, I was immediately captivated by the traditional Chinese buildings, adorned with red lanterns, reminiscent of ancient inns often seen in historical dramas.

The vibrant and beautiful lanterns blended perfectly with the architecture, creating an absolutely stunning scene.

And get this – those flowers actually move!

The shopping areas were also beautifully adorned with lanterns, as you can see in the photos.

Doesn't it just perfectly capture both tradition and modernity?

Since 2026 is the Year of the Horse, I also noticed quite a few horse-themed lanterns.

Honestly, it was so incredibly beautiful that the unexpected ~$12 expense for the 80 yuan ticket felt completely worth it! 😉

✔︎ My Review of the Shanghai Yuyuan Lantern Festival

I was a bit worried about the rain, wondering if I'd truly be able to enjoy the festival.

But even with the rain, it was still incredibly beautiful to explore.

In fact, the rain added a unique, atmospheric charm that I quite enjoyed.

My only regret is that I didn't have more time, as it's open until 10:00 PM.

I highly recommend allowing plenty of time for your visit.

Because I combined it with the Wanghong experience,

I felt rushed and wished I could have lingered longer. 😂
