Legend has it that a government official named Pan Yunduan built this private oasis as a peaceful retreat for his aging parents to enjoy in their golden years.
In fact, the name 'Yuyuan (豫园)' translates to 'a garden of peace and comfort.'
Although it suffered significant damage through various wars and historical upheavals over the centuries, meticulous restoration projects have beautifully preserved the garden you see today.
Today, it stands as far more than just a garden—it’s an iconic, must-visit landmark of Shanghai.

The reason Yu Garden is so incredibly popular isn't just because of its rich history.
It’s the unique experience of stepping into traditional Chinese architecture and classical garden design right in the heart of a bustling modern metropolis.
Plus, having a vibrant street full of delicious street food and shopping right next door makes it an absolute winner!
Being able to check off sightseeing, eating, and shopping all in one spot makes it a super-efficient addition to your Shanghai itinerary.
Getting to Yu Garden is incredibly easy, even if you’re using public transit.
Just hop on Metro Line 10 and get off at 'Yuyuan Garden Station'. From there, it's just a short walk.
As soon as you exit the station, those gorgeous traditional-style buildings will catch your eye, so you won't have any trouble finding your way!
If you prefer convenience, taxis in China are very affordable, so you'll likely find yourself calling a DiDi (the local ride-hailing app).
Just keep in mind that cars aren't allowed inside the Yuyuan Bazaar (the historic shopping area), so your driver will drop you off just outside the perimeter.
When navigating China, choosing the right map app is key! While Google Maps can be buggy, using Amap (Gaode Maps / 高德地图) is by far the most accurate option.
Searching for "豫园" (Yuyuan) or "豫园商城" (Yuyuan Bazaar) will point you exactly to where you need to go.
Searching in Chinese characters is always much more reliable than typing in English!
The alleys around Yu Garden can feel like a bit of a maze, making it very easy to lose your bearings on your way out.
It’s a great idea to save the entrance on your map app or take a quick screenshot beforehand to make navigating back a breeze.

Yu Garden is surprisingly spacious and features a wonderfully intricate layout,
making it an absolute blast to explore.
As soon as you step inside, you'll spot the iconic Nine-Turn Bridge and its scenic pond—
the perfect photo spot to capture stunning shots set against traditional architecture!
As you wander deeper into the garden, a beautiful labyrinth of pavilions, rock formations, and peaceful ponds unfolds, offering a fresh new view at every turn.
Each zone has its own unique character, keeping things exciting and fresh the entire time you're walking through.
While the day offers a serene, traditional escape,
the entire vibe completely transforms once the sun goes down.
In particular, the surrounding Yuyuan Bazaar lights up
with a spectacular golden glow, which is why so many travelers make sure to return for a second look at night.
My recommended route is to
head in just before dusk to explore the garden first,
and then marvel at the illuminated bazaar on your way out.
This allows you to experience both the peaceful daytime atmosphere and the vibrant night scenery in one go—talk about getting the best of both worlds!
It's also incredibly beautiful to snap a photo right where the warm golden lights meet the vibrant red lanterns.

biggest hubs for street food and shopping.
It's packed with restaurants famous for Xiaolongbao (soup dumplings),
making it super easy to transition from sightseeing straight into an epic food adventure.

Yang's Dumpling (소양생전) - Legendary Pan-Fried Dumplings
While some stalls are grab-and-go only with limited seating,
it's the absolute best spot to effortlessly enjoy mouthwatering Shanghai-style pan-fried dumplings!
Haidilao Hotpot
This location is tucked inside a shopping mall just a 5 to 7-minute walk from the main Yu Garden bazaar area.
The biggest perk? It's relatively quiet, meaning we walked straight in with zero wait time!!!

There is so much variety when it comes to street food, making it super fun to grab a quick bite! You can also easily enjoy Chinese desserts and snacks without any pressure.

The shop is so clean and neatly organized, making it a joy to browse around.
From teas and tea sets to traditional trinkets, snacks, and Qipao...
the variety of souvenirs here is pretty impressive!
Since it's a popular tourist hotspot, prices can run a bit high,
but if you compare a few shops, you can easily snag them at a reasonable price.
Cafes
While you'll find plenty of popular spots like Heytea and Chagee,
I highly recommend visiting a traditional tea house café while you're in Yu Garden.
It's the perfect way to soak in the unique, historic atmosphere of Yu Garden.
Plus, it's a wonderful spot to sit back and recharge during your busy day of exploring!
Massage
Zheng Yuan Yuan Massage
This is a famous Chinese foot massage chain that is incredibly popular with locals.
I make sure to stop by every single time I visit Shanghai,
and let me tell you—it is absolutely heavenly! Haha.
It's located right near Haidilao, making it super convenient to combine into one trip!
Other Recommendations
There's also a Chocolate Museum nearby,
so I highly recommend popping in!
The rich, sweet aroma of chocolate fills the air,
so your feet will probably lead you right to it anyway! Haha.

Yu Garden is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The admission fee is around 30 to 40 yuan. It is recommended to book tickets in advance, as the ticket lines can get very long during weekends or peak seasons.
You can take Metro Line 10, get off at Yuyuan Garden Station, and walk from there. If you use DiDi (ride-hailing), please note that vehicles cannot enter the Yuyuan Tourist Mart area, so you will need to get off nearby and walk.
We recommend visiting around dusk to explore the paid garden area first. Afterward, you can step outside to enjoy the spectacular golden night view of the illuminated Yuyuan Tourist Mart, allowing you to experience both charms.
It is much more accurate to use Amap (Gaode Ditu) rather than Google Maps. You can reliably find the location by typing the Chinese characters '豫园' or '豫园商城' into the search bar.
We recommend Yang's Dumplings for Shanghai-style pan-fried pork buns, or Haidilao Hot Pot, which is a 5 to 7-minute walk from the Yu Garden commercial area. After your meal, it is a great idea to visit Zheng Yuan Yuan, a popular local foot massage chain located near Haidilao.
