Why I Recommend a Wuzhen Water Town Tour

As I mentioned, Wuzhen Water Town is roughly 2 hours from downtown Shanghai, which can make getting there by public transport a bit of a hassle.
And while Didi (China's ride-hailing service) is an option, the cost can be quite significant, which is why I really suggest taking a bus tour!

You get to relax and recharge on a comfy large bus during the roughly 4-hour round trip, and our fantastic guide shared so many interesting stories that there wasn't a dull moment on the way there or back.

Best of all, you don't have to stress about language barriers in China for things like buying tickets or boarding the gondola – just follow your guide and enjoy a truly relaxing journey!
Wuzhen is divided into Dongzha (East Gate) and Xizha (West Gate), and seeing both in one day requires strategic planning. But with your guide expertly mapping out the perfect route, you'll get the absolute most out of Wuzhen in just half a day!

Wuzhen Water Town's serene daytime scenery is absolutely beautiful, but its night view is truly exceptional and a sight to behold.
Unlike Shanghai's dazzling city lights, Wuzhen's nightscape offers a tranquil yet deeply moving experience that you absolutely wouldn't want to miss.
Next up, I'll share my experience of the Wuzhen Water Town night tour.
My Wuzhen Water Town Experience

Wuzhen Water Town is largely divided into Dongzha (East Gate) and Xizha (West Gate). My itinerary began with exploring Dongzha before moving on to Xizha.
Dongzha (East Gate)

Dongzha is wonderfully preserved, giving you an authentic feel for old China and Wuzhen's local charm.
And the best part? As soon as we arrived in Dongzha, we hopped onto a traditional gondola, and the atmosphere was absolutely incredible!

The water town, as we first encountered it from the gondola, offered a unique sense of tranquil charm that I hadn't experienced anywhere else.
It was truly fascinating to watch local life unfold on both sides of the canal, and I found myself mesmerized by the scene.

Starting our visit with a boat ride right upon arriving in the water town instantly filled me with excitement and a fresh sense of adventure!
Our guide helped us capture some amazing shots at Dongzha's beautiful photo spots,
and then our adventure truly began!

Instead of simply wandering around Dongzha,
we got to explore intriguing spots like the Wooden Carving Museum and the Bed Museum,
all while our guide regaled us with countless fascinating tales.
Hearing all those stories while exploring the sights
made the experience so much more profound.
I honestly thought, "If I were doing this solo, I'd probably just zoom through these spots in 10 seconds!"
It really hit me then how much I appreciated taking the tour.
Xizha
If Dongzha was the intriguing appetizer, Xizha was definitely the magnificent main course!
We ended up dedicating much more of our time there.

What made Xizha even better was that our guide gave us all the insider tips on what to see and do,
and then we were free to explore at our own pace!

Xizha offered us the perfect opportunity to stroll through its picturesque streets,
hunt for unique souvenirs,
and savor some truly delicious snacks and meals.
Since our guide had given us all the essential information beforehand,
it was incredibly relaxing to enjoy our free time without any worries of getting lost!

We also snapped countless photos of Xizha's canals, which felt a little more grand and elaborate than Dongzha's.
The atmospheric charm of taking pictures by the canals, peeking out from between the alleys,
was simply delightful!

But the absolute highlight of Wuzhen? That's definitely after sunset!
The dazzling nightscape reflecting on the canals creates an emotional impact
you truly have to witness firsthand to grasp its full beauty.
With charming bars and cafes scattered everywhere,
I highly recommend finding a cozy spot, settling in, and soaking up the enchanting scenery at your leisure.

Xizha boasts numerous bridges gracefully arching over its canals.
I found the scene of gondolas gliding under these bridges to be particularly enchanting and personally, truly breathtaking.
I sincerely hope you get the chance to experience Wuzhen's magnificent nightscape,
it's a spectacle unlike anything you'll find elsewhere!
