Hello everyone! I'm Ciel, your travel influencer-!

I'll tell you honestly why I felt that way!

What is Wukang Mansion?
Wukang Mansion is a historical building in Shanghai, China,
that preserves the atmosphere of the French Concession era.
It was built in 1924.
Its original name was Normandy Apartments,
and it's characterized by its unique triangular exterior.
While it's an old architectural marvel, it's also an apartment building where actual residents live,
so internal viewing is not possible.
Visitors primarily come to admire the building's exterior or to take stunning photos with its facade as a backdrop.
For those who want to experience unique architecture and create unforgettable photo memories,
Wukang Mansion is a highly recommended Shanghai travel destination.

🇨🇳Shanghai Travel: A Must-Visit for Life Photos
Wukang Mansion is recommended for those who:
✔︎Want to see Shanghai's historical architecture built in the 1920s.
✔︎Want to capture amazing photos with this unique triangular apartment building.
✔︎Want to stroll around the Wukang Road area and enjoy cafes and desserts as part of their itinerary.

To be completely honest, right from when I started planning my Shanghai itinerary,
I thought, 'There's really nothing to see here besides the apartment's exterior...'
'It's just a place to go for one great photo...'
'Is it really worth going?' Those were my thoughts.
I wasn't particularly keen on just going there to take a picture with that apartment...
However, when you plan a trip to Shanghai,
everyone seems to visit Wukang Mansion, right?
So, I figured, 'If I'm going to Shanghai this time,
when will I ever get to go again?'
And since everyone else goes, I might as well check it out too!'
That's why I added it to my itinerary.

My Honest Review of Wukang Mansion
To get into the full review of Wukang Mansion,
it's famous for taking photos with the building as a backdrop. Since it's an actual residential apartment building where people live,
it's not possible to go inside and look around.
So, all you can do is admire the building from the outside.
That's why, having come all this way, I felt it would be a shame to leave without doing anything,
so I took pictures from both the left and right sides.

The feeling of the photos taken from the left and right sides was quite different, so
I definitely recommend trying to take photos from all angles!
Personally, I found that shots taken from the right side,
which capture a traffic light with Chinese characters in the frame,
had a bit more of that unique, 'vibe-y' feel, though it's all about personal taste!
A quick word of caution: Wukang Mansion is right next to a busy road.
While it's tempting to try and get that perfect shot with the mansion as your backdrop,
I noticed some people stepping out onto the road,
taking photos dangerously.
While there are usually people around to remind you to stay safe...
just in case you get jostled towards the road,
I recommend being careful not to get pushed out.
Wukang Mansion is a super popular photo spot, and I heard there are often street photographers offering 'snap' sessions.
When I visited, I didn't actually see any,
and I wasn't really looking for one, so I skipped it.
However, a friend later showed me some fantastic photos they had taken with a street photographer there – and they looked pretty great!
It looked like they even did some basic Photoshop, so if you're curious, it might be worth trying out!
But if you're looking for more than just a quick street snap
and really want a dedicated, high-quality photoshoot,
it might be a great idea to book a professional session in advance.
I found a highly-rated snap photography service, so I'm dropping the link here for you!

Think it's a shame to only take photos at Wukang Mansion and leave?

Okay, full disclosure, I totally went to Wukang Mansion primarily for the photos.
But let's be real, just snapping pictures and heading off feels a little incomplete, doesn't it?
So, I started looking into what else the neighborhood had to offer.
Turns out, there are some lovely cafes serving up delicious pastries and coffee,
plus a few charming little gift shops!
While you could easily spend more time just wandering around the streets,
I already had a packed culinary itinerary for the day
and didn't want to spoil my appetite with pastries.
And honestly, cute souvenir shops aren't usually my thing, so I wasn't particularly drawn to those either.
But then, something truly caught my eye: Corner Cone Gelato's
adorable gelato!
To be fair, it wasn't the most delicious gelato I've ever had, but its visual appeal was undeniably adorable,
so I'd recommend grabbing one just for the experience.

✔︎ My Review: Wukang Mansion, Shanghai's Must-Visit Spot for Iconic Photos!
Honestly, even before I visited, I wondered if Wukang Mansion was truly worth it,
thinking there might not be much to do beyond admiring its unique exterior.
I actually debated whether to include it in my itinerary!
But once I got there, I really appreciated being able to snap some iconic Shanghai travel photos
against such a distinctive architectural masterpiece!
And, of course, I got to try that adorable Corner Cone gelato!
Just a heads-up though: if you're not particularly keen on exploring nearby cafes or strolling the streets,
you might find yourself seeing everything quite quickly.
As it was my first time in Shanghai, I decided to visit at least once,
but honestly, if I were to return to Shanghai,
I might not make it a mandatory stop on my itinerary next time.
That said, if you're eager to capture some truly unique architecture and those 'once-in-a-lifetime' travel photos,
then it's definitely worth checking out at least once!
