Recommended Value-for-Money Accommodations in Shanghai
Seventh Heaven Hotel on Nanjing Road East

Hello everyone!
I'm Nabongsoon, your travel influencer.
From my home in Jeju, there are direct flights, and it's such a short hop that it feels almost like traveling domestically! Thanks to these easy trips, I've visited Shanghai, China, several times recently, and now I'm thrilled to share some fantastic Shanghai accommodation recommendations with you.

The Shanghai hotel I'm excited to introduce this time is the Seventh Heaven Hotel, a value-for-money option on Nanjing Road East, where my son and I stayed for a "0.5-night" experience as we kicked off our Shanghai adventure.
Its incredible location makes it a frequent feature on lists of recommended value Shanghai hotels, and it's a solid 3-star property.
I'll give you a detailed rundown of its location, how to book, room condition, and even its pros and cons.
1. Location: Shanghai's Value Hotel

From my numerous trips to Shanghai, China, I've consistently found that staying on Nanjing Road East is the absolute best.
That's why many Koreans, myself included, look for Shanghai accommodations right in the heart of Nanjing Road East – it offers easy access to nearby attractions, and you can walk to countless amazing restaurants and sights.

The Seventh Heaven Hotel is no exception; for a standard room with two single beds (around 15m²), the cost per night is roughly ~$53, offering unbeatable value. Its location is even more central on Nanjing Road East than the Grand Central Hotel, a popular choice for Koreans, and it's incredibly close to the subway station. Even considering the slightly older facilities, I completely understand why so many people choose this spot.

There's a drink vending machine on the 1st floor, and a convenience store nearby.
You'll need to take the elevator up to the 7th floor of the building with the "grandfather character" to find the reception.

Next to the front desk on the 7th floor, you'll find...

...the Old Shanghai Restaurant and Bar.
I heard it used to be a villa, and its opulent Oriental decorations truly stood out. While both the building and interior decor show their age, it created an antique and cozy atmosphere – a truly unique Shanghai hotel experience.

We checked in on the evening of our first day in Shanghai, China, having taken a taxi directly from the airport to the hotel's doorstep.
The staff spoke excellent English and were incredibly friendly, making our check-in a pleasant experience.
2. Room Condition

Rooms are located from the 8th to the 18th floors.
We booked an 18m²
Twin Bed Superior Room with a City View.

For a Shanghai hotel recommended for its value,
I was pretty happy with the room size.
Of course, it's not comparable to a five-star hotel,
but even though it's older, it was generally clean,
so getting a good night's sleep wasn't an issue at all.

The wooden built-in wardrobe, which creaked a bit when opened,
had hangers ready,
and the table in front of the bed was sturdy enough,
making it quite convenient to pull out my laptop and get some work done.

There was a TV, but I didn't watch it,
and the fridge wasn't exactly chilling things effectively.

An electric kettle, teacups, tea, and bottled water
were all provided.

The window also creaked,
so I left it alone, but
the view of Nanjing East Road outside kept things
from feeling stuffy.

I came expecting no disposable amenities to be provided,
but upon arrival, I found a disposable comb, toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, and other items
conveniently available in the bathroom drawer, which I made good use of.

However, whenever I travel to China,
I usually bring a shower filter, but
the showerhead here wasn't a standard shape, so I couldn't use my filter,
which was a bit of a shame.

Since it's an older building, anticipating that the water might not be pristine,
there was a bathtub, but I didn't end up using it.
Fortunately, I showered and stayed without any issues whatsoever.
3. Pros and Cons

The grandpa character at the 1st-floor shop makes it easier to find the place.
First off, the pros are its affordable price point and fantastic location.
Situated right in the heart of Nanjing East Road,
it made enjoying my Shanghai trip incredibly smooth and convenient.

It was walkable to The Bund, where you can see the Oriental Pearl TV Tower,
and also to People's Square Station for the subway to attractions like
Shanghai Disneyland. Taxi fares were also quite reasonable,
so grabbing a Didi taxi right in front of the accommodation made getting around to nearby city
attractions super easy.

However, what I've noticed from my recent Shanghai trips is that hotels rated 3-stars or below,
rather than 4- or 5-star establishments,
often feature creaky old furniture, almost non-functional refrigerators,
and room conditions that lean more towards a motel feel.
So, it's something you should be prepared for and keep in mind.

I'm quite accustomed to international travel,
and as long as the bed is clean and there are no bugs,
I can usually 'crash' and sleep soundly. So, for a quick half-night stay to kick off or wrap up a trip,
I'm perfectly happy at a value-for-money accommodation,
preferring to save money to splurge on an extra delicious meal or experience.

This 3-star spot isn't bad for a casual, value-focused stay with friends.
However, please keep in mind that it might not be the ideal Shanghai hotel
if you're traveling with elderly parents or young children,
or if you're looking to create a romantic atmosphere with a partner.
4. Concluding Thoughts on Our Shanghai Accommodation

Seventh Heaven Hotel, which kicked off my Shanghai trip with just my son,
despite some regrets about its dated facilities,
is located right in the middle of Nanjing Road East's main street
and offers incredible value for money for a Shanghai hotel,
making it an attractive accommodation that could easily offset its downsides.

Thanks to this, we frugally saved on our first night's accommodation,
allowing my son and me to enjoy even more
delicious local food.

If you're particular about accommodation facilities,
the 4 and 5-star Central-affiliated hotels I introduced earlier
also offered great value for money, so I hope you'll consider them as well.
I hope you have a wonderful trip to Shanghai!
