Shanghai Provisional Government Closed: Xintiandi Guide
Heading to Shanghai? The Provisional Government site is closed from 08/01/2026 to 09/14/2026. Discover the best alternative spots in Xintiandi and Tianzifang.

The Historic Site of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in Shanghai is temporarily closing its doors for essential interior renovations.
The closure is scheduled from 08/01/2026 to 09/14/2026, with the official reopening set for Tuesday, 09/15/2026.

If you visited earlier in July, you were in luck. However, starting today, August 1, visitors will not be allowed inside. Make sure to adjust your Shanghai itinerary to avoid a wasted trip!

Typically, touring the inside of the Provisional Government building only takes about 20 minutes. Although photography is strictly prohibited indoors and the exhibits are relatively modest, the site carries profound historical significance, making it a highly recommended stop for history enthusiasts.
Since the site is closed, let's look at some excellent alternative spots to explore in the surrounding neighborhood.
Best Nearby Alternatives

If you are heading to the fashionable Xintiandi district, there is a vibrant pedestrian street you absolutely must wander down. I originally planned to grab French toast at the famous "Polux by Paul Pairet," but the queue was massive, and paying ~$20 to ~$30 for just two pieces of toast felt a bit excessive, so I decided to skip it.

The best stretch for a scenic stroll is Huangpi Road, highlighted on the map. It is an easy 10-minute walk (about 0.5 miles) from the Provisional Government building.

This is the ultimate gathering spot for travelers in Xintiandi. Day or night, the area is buzzing with energy and packed with Instagram-worthy photo backdrops. It is exceptionally safe, with a regular police presence keeping the peace.
The only minor drawback is that the street consists almost entirely of restaurants and cafes. If you are not planning to sit down for a meal or a drink, you might run out of things to do fairly quickly.

If you step inside the New World Shopping Center, you will find another trendy hotspot packed with popular cafes and modern restaurants.

When searching for dining recommendations in Xintiandi, online guides often point to the same handful of famous spots, making it hard to try something genuinely new. I tried to avoid the crowds by dining at a quiet Italian restaurant, but unfortunately, there was a clear reason it was empty. The prices were high and the food was completely average. Learn from my experience: if a restaurant has a line, it is usually worth the wait! Stick to the popular spots even if you have to queue.

Another fantastic alternative near Xintiandi is Tianzifang. This maze of narrow alleys is perfect for snapping unique photos and shopping for famous Shanghai teas, local snacks, and souvenirs. I spent a wonderful afternoon here sampling various teas and bought several boxes to take home.

You can easily reach Tianzifang by subway, or grab a quick, affordable taxi from Xintiandi. Because there is so much to see and buy in Tianzifang, I will be writing a dedicated, in-depth guide for it very soon!

Traveling during the peak August heat only to find the Provisional Government closed might feel disappointing, but don't let it ruin your trip. There are plenty of amazing, vibrant spots nearby to keep your Shanghai adventure going!
