Shanghai Massage Shop Recommendations
Kangdao vs. Doweonhyang
ⓒ Ssoejini

Hello there! I'm Ssoejini, your globetrotting friend :)
When you travel in Shanghai, walking 20,000 steps a day is practically a given, right?
I walked from Panlong Tiandi all the way to Nanjing East Road, and my soles practically went numb.
I urgently searched for a massage shop, and you might have experienced the frustration of most places requiring reservations.
Today, I'm excited to share my honest, self-funded review,
comparing Kangdao Massage (where I successfully booked on the same day and experienced "the best foot exfoliation of my life!")
with Doweonhyang Massage!

1. Kangdao Nanjing Road Branch: Shanghai's Value-for-Money Massage Shop (The Benefit of Same-Day Booking)
Shanghai boasts many famous shops, but most require reservations several days in advance.
However, perhaps because Kangdao is a chain, I was able to get a "Come right over!" response even for a same-day inquiry.
Even if you're not a planner, or if sudden fatigue hits,
it's the perfect place for a spontaneous visit.
I visited 100% with my own money, but the satisfaction was beyond my expectations.

2. Price and My Honest Review of the 60-Minute Full Body + Foot Massage

Despite the luxurious interior, the prices are very reasonable.

As soon as you enter, they serve Hami melon (honey melon), warm tea,
bananas, and candy, making you feel truly pampered.

There were also hangers for both the clothes you change into and the clothes you arrived in, which was a nice touch for tidiness!

Massage Highlights:
It's primarily a 'dry massage,' meaning no oils are used.
They accurately pinpointed the tight spots in my shoulders and back,
and the masseuse kept checking on the pressure, asking "Does it hurt?", which made the pressure adjustment absolutely perfect.
Private Room:
I went with a friend, and since we had a lot of luggage,
they thoughtfully assigned us a 3-person room!
They use disposable sheets and slippers, ensuring excellent hygiene.
3. You ABSOLUTELY MUST Add This On! Foot Exfoliation (20 RMB)
This is the absolute highlight of today's post...!!
If your masseuse recommends foot exfoliation
during your massage, say "YES" without hesitation.

The expert came over with a headlight on and a toolkit, practically 'sculpting' my feet.
Honestly, it's quite embarrassing...? hahaha
Even just showing your bare soles feels a bit shameful...
Watching the dead skin flake off... it's genuinely mortifying..
But once it's over, you'll experience the miracle of your soles becoming as soft as a baby's bottom..
I do it every time I visit Shanghai! lol
It's just an additional 20 RMB (approx. ~$3)!

After the foot exfoliation is done,
you'll move to the full-body massage room!
Once everything was finished, I was touched by their thoughtfulness, as they told me to "get some more rest" before leaving.

I paid the extra with Alipay, and there were absolutely no tip demands!
I only booked the full-body massage,
and added the foot exfoliation on the spot!
They even served fruit and tea again afterwards,
so I left feeling completely relaxed and refreshed!!
4. The Ultimate Shanghai Massage Showdown: Kangdao vs. Taoyuanxiang

When you search for Shanghai massages, these two places pop up the most, right?
Wondering which one to choose?
Actually, Taoyuanxiang is quite close to Kangdao!
That's why many people compare them, you see?
Comparison Item | Kangdao (Kangdao Tiandi) | Taoyuanxiang (桃源乡) |
Booking Difficulty | Relatively easy for same-day booking/walk-ins (multiple branches) | Advance booking essential (long waits without a reservation) |
Atmosphere | Clean, modern, large-scale spa feel | Cozy and tranquil, with an authentic Chinese ambiance |
Value for Money | Full-body + foot massage prices are slightly more reasonable | Slightly higher price range, but consistent service quality |
Key Strengths | Powerful 'foot exfoliation' & recliners | Massage pressure that hits the spot for many |
Location | Nanjing East Road center (e.g., next to MINISO) | Near Nanjing East Road Station (excellent accessibility) |
For those who are proficient with WeChat or speak Chinese, on-site payment is also an option, but
Honestly, these Korean platforms are just incredible...!
"Feeling completely wiped out today and want to head there right now?"
If that's you 👉 Head straight to Kang Dao!
"Bringing your parents along,
or you absolutely prefer a famous spot with tons of glowing reviews?"
If that sounds like you 👉 Head straight to Taoyuanxiang!
Both Taoyuanxiang and Kang Dao are absolutely fantastic options,
so it's really about advance booking vs. same-day booking.
Choose whichever best fits your plans!
