Speed into Shanghai on the iconic Maglev! Discover how to navigate from Pudong Airport to the city, check 2026 prices, and find essential travel tips.

Arriving at Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) and wondering how to get to the city center? You've got a few options: private pickup services, taxis, the Metro, or the incredibly fast Maglev train. For many travelers, the Shanghai Maglev is the top choice for its speed and unique experience.
If you're a first-timer, navigating a new city can be daunting. Don't worry! I'll break down everything you need to know about riding the Shanghai Maglev, including how to get tickets, current prices for 2026, and the timetable, making your journey from Pudong Airport to downtown Shanghai a breeze.

So, what exactly is the Maglev? It's Shanghai's groundbreaking magnetic levitation train. Reaching speeds of up to 267 miles per hour (430 km/h), this ultra-high-speed train whisks you from Pudong Airport to Longyang Road Station in just 8 minutes! It's an incredible start to any Shanghai adventure.
If your final destination is somewhere like Nanjing East Road, you'll need to transfer to Metro Line 2 at Longyang Road Station. This adds another 30-40 minutes to your total travel time.
1. Finding the Maglev at Pudong Airport

Once you exit customs at Pudong Airport, keep an eye on the overhead signs. You'll quickly spot directions for "Maglev." Just follow these signs, and you'll be on your way!

It's a bit of a trek from the airport exit to the Maglev boarding gates, but don't fret! There are plenty of moving walkways to give you a "speed boost." Even with the help of these, it still took me about 10 minutes to reach the platform without stopping.

You'll find the ticket booths conveniently located right next to the Maglev turnstiles. You can purchase your tickets directly there.
2. Shanghai Maglev Ticket Prices (2026)

Both ticket kiosks and staffed counters are available for purchasing your Maglev tickets. Here's a pro tip: if you present your same-day flight ticket, you can get a discount of 10 CNY (approximately ~$1) off the regular price!
🎫 Shanghai Maglev Ticket Prices 🎫
· One-way: ~$6
· Round-trip: ~$10
· Discounted One-way (with same-day flight ticket): ~$5
While the round-trip fare is a flat ~$10, if you're like me and unsure about your return transportation, you can opt for the discounted one-way. I showed my flight ticket and bought a one-way ticket for ~$5 initially.

After much deliberation during my trip, I decided to take the Maglev back to Pudong Airport as well! When purchasing my return ticket at the Longyang Road Station counter, I simply showed my departure flight ticket for that day and received the same discounted one-way fare of ~$5. So, even by purchasing two one-way discounted tickets, my total airport-to-city and city-to-airport journey cost me ~$10, just like a regular round-trip ticket.
Keep in mind that round-trip tickets are valid for 7 days from the date of purchase. If your Shanghai adventure extends beyond 7 days, you'll need to purchase two separate one-way tickets.
3. Boarding and Timetable

⬇️ Shanghai Maglev Timetable (2026) ⬇️
✔ From Pudong Airport to Longyang Road Station
First train: 7:02 AM | Last train: 9:42 PM | Frequency: Every 20 minutes
✔ From Longyang Road Station to Pudong Airport
First train: 6:45 AM | Last train: 9:52 PM
· 6:45 AM - 7:00 AM: Every 15 minutes
· 7:00 AM - 9:20 PM: Every 20 minutes
· 9:20 PM - 9:52 PM: Every 32 minutes

Before boarding, both your carry-on and checked luggage will go through a security scan. This is standard procedure, so be prepared.

There's no assigned seating on the Maglev, so feel free to choose any open spot you like. Find a window seat for the best views!

While there are dedicated luggage storage areas, I found that the trains weren't overly crowded due to the frequent schedule. This meant there was usually plenty of space, and I often just kept my bag in front of me without an issue.
As the Maglev speeds along, you'll feel the train gently curve, creating an almost surreal sensation – it reminded me of those mind-bending scenes from the movie "Interstellar" where the ceiling seems to merge with the ground! 🤩🤩

Once you arrive at Longyang Road Station, you'll transfer to Metro Line 2, which takes approximately 15-20 minutes to reach Nanjing East Road. This means the total travel time from Shanghai Pudong Airport to downtown Nanjing East Road is roughly 30-45 minutes.

However, I have to admit, the Maglev transfer can be quite a workout! 🤣
First, there's that approximately 10-minute walk from the airport exit to the Maglev platform. Then, you'll need to lift your luggage onto the security scanner yourself. And guess what? When you transfer to Metro Line 2 at Longyang Road, you'll have another security check to go through!
Adding to the challenge, Metro Line 2 is a major route, similar to a bustling subway line in New York or London. It gets incredibly crowded, so don't expect to find a seat, especially with luggage.

Once I finally made it to Nanjing East Road, the crowds were overwhelming. Wheeling my suitcase to my accommodation felt like an obstacle course – constantly bumping into people and struggling to find a clear path. It was quite exhausting just getting into the city!
If you're traveling with parents, young children, or simply prefer a more relaxed start to your trip, I highly recommend considering a private pickup service. Save your energy for exploring Shanghai's incredible sights! 🤣🤣

If you present your same-day flight ticket at the ticket counter, you can purchase a one-way ticket for 40 Yuan, which is a 10 Yuan discount from the regular price of 50 Yuan. When returning to the airport from the city, the same discount applies if you show your same-day departure flight ticket at the Longyang Road Station counter.
Taking the Maglev, you will arrive at Longyang Road Station from Pudong Airport in just 8 minutes. Including the time to transfer to Metro Line 2 at Longyang Road Station, it takes about 30 to 45 minutes in total to reach East Nanjing Road.
The round-trip Maglev ticket is valid for 7 days from the date of purchase. Therefore, if your trip to Shanghai is 8 days or longer, you must purchase one-way tickets separately instead of a round-trip ticket.
The first Maglev train from Pudong Airport to Longyang Road Station is at 7:02 AM, and the last train is at 9:42 PM. The train interval for this route is a consistent 20 minutes.
