The Restaurant Vibe

The breakfast area is located right behind the main reception desk. It is not a massive dining hall, but there are plenty of tables, and the cozy setup makes it very inviting. The variety of food here actually rivals some of the pricier hotels I've stayed at!

The restaurant never felt overly crowded, so snagging a cozy window seat was incredibly easy. I enjoyed my breakfast here both mornings of my stay, and it was a wonderful way to start the day.

If you are traveling with toddlers, they also have comfortable baby high chairs available, making it easy for families to dine together.
The Food Selection

No breakfast buffet is complete without a bakery section! 🍞 They offered a solid selection of crowd-favorite breads. While the jam variety was simple, having classic strawberry jam and butter was more than enough for a delicious toast.

There was also a fresh salad and fruit bar. The oranges look a bit sparse in my photo, but the staff was super quick to restock everything, so you will never run out of fresh options.

The hot food options were surprisingly diverse and flavorful. The sausages were exceptionally plump and savory—I kept going back for seconds!

The cereal station is pretty standard, but it is a quick and easy way to fuel up if you are in a rush.

One unique thing about Shanghai hotels is that they almost always serve local steamed dumplings and red bean buns for breakfast. Surprisingly, the dumplings here were even better than the ones I had at a more expensive hotel later in my trip!
Our Honest Review

I ended up plating a colorful and delicious mix of both Western and local dishes. Everything tasted fresh and well-prepared.

I used to think Southeast Asia had the absolute best sweet fruits, but Shanghai definitely held its own! The watermelon was incredibly sweet and juicy. I was too lazy to peel the oranges, but judging by the watermelon, they were likely delicious too!

✔︎ Final Thoughts on Shanghai Joyful Yard Hotel
For a budget-friendly stay (typically under $50 per night) near Pudong Airport with free shuttle perks, this hotel exceeded all my expectations. The breakfast was a massive highlight—even better than some paid hotel buffets!
