Shanghai's Must-Try Lamb Skewers Spot
Henjiuyi Qian: Reservations, Menu, Opening Hours, and Gaode Maps
During my trip to Shanghai, China,
I felt like I'd been to almost all the famous restaurants popular among Koreans,
but honestly, Chinese food... it just didn't suit my taste. 😓
However, amidst all that, **Henjiuyi Qian**, known as a top lamb skewer spot in Shanghai,
really hit the spot for me,
and the service was fantastic too, making it a place I'd love to revisit!
I'll be sharing details on how to make reservations for Henjiuyi Qian, their menu, waiting tips,
Gaode Maps address, and my dining experience.

1. Henjiuyi Qian

📍 Shanghai No.1 Department Store
830 Nanjinglu St, Huangpu, China 200001
➡️ Shanghai Henjiuyi Qian Nanjing East Road Gaode Maps Link
(I'll write it again in the comments, so feel free to copy it!)
The operating hours for Shanghai's lamb skewer hotspot, Henjiuyi Qian, are
daily from 11 AM to 1 AM the next day.
Although kitchen orders close at 1 AM,
if there are still customers dining after that,
the staff is great about not rushing you, allowing you to finish your meal comfortably,
without making you feel like you need to hurry.
So, we visited around 12 AM and stayed until 2 AM,
enjoying our meal at our own pace and leaving as the last customers!

For reference, the Henjiuyi Qian Nanjing East Road branch is located
on the 6th floor of Nanjing Road's No.1 Department Store.
Since the No.1 Department Store operates until 10 PM,
those visiting after 10 PM will need to enter through the side door
next to the KFC entrance.
2. How to Make a Reservation

I waited for 30 minutes in person, but you can actually make reservations online for Shanghai's lamb skewer hotspot, Henjiuyi Qian, so keep that in mind!
/
➡️ How to Reserve a Table at Shanghai's Henjiuyi Qian
1) Search for 很久以前羊肉串 OR (henji ----) on WeChat
2) When the account appears, click 排队订座 (Queue & Reserve) and then 'Online Booking'
3) Set the number of diners, then make a reservation at your preferred branch.
3. On-Site Waiting

Perhaps because it was late, the wait time decreased faster than I expected,
and while waiting, we could enjoy water and some simple snacks,
so I didn't even notice the time passing.

It seems so many Koreans visit Henjiuyi Qian, Shanghai's lamb skewer spot, that
the entire waiting signboard was exclusively in Korean.
What's more, everyone waiting on-site was Korean, lol!
4. Henjiuyi Qian Review

After about 30 minutes of on-site waiting, we were finally seated.
As soon as we sat down, they gave us cool water, hair ties, and cool pads,
which really helped us shake off the heat and enjoy our meal comfortably.

I felt it already while waiting, but
Henjiuyi Qian in Shanghai is incredibly popular among Koreans.
The reason for its popularity isn't just because of the food's taste,
but it seems to be because the service is extraordinary. 😗
From the moment you wait to be seated until you leave after your meal,
you feel truly taken care of by the staff,
making the visit itself incredibly satisfying.

Plus, since you can even see into the kitchen,
you can eat with complete peace of mind about the cleanliness.

You can view the menu by scanning the QR code on the table.
Since we're in Shanghai, China, lamb skewers (yang kkochi) are a must, of course.
I also recommend the corn kernels (both flavors are highly recommended!),
chive salad, and bacon-wrapped chives!

I heard Chinese beers aren't usually very cold or great,
so I initially tried to avoid ordering one.
But how can you visit a fantastic lamb skewer spot in Shanghai and *not* have a beer?!
So, I decided to order a Hoegaarden beer.
It looked a bit like orange juice,
but it tasted surprisingly good and was perfectly chilled, so I really enjoyed it!

Finally, the much-anticipated Shanghai lamb skewers!
They even arrived beautifully arranged.

I thought we'd have to grill the lamb skewers ourselves, but
the staff laid them all out on the grill for us and came over periodically
to check on how well they were cooked,
so we could just relax and enjoy our meal! ;)

There are many different lamb skewer restaurants in Shanghai, China,
but after trying just one skewer, I immediately understood why Hunjiu Yiqian
is overwhelmingly popular among Koreans! ✨
There was no toughness, absolutely no gamey lamb smell,
and it was tender and delicious with just the right amount of fat!

It was delicious on its own, but
dipping it in the special sauce made it twice as good! -
Personally, I preferred the red sauce,
but the yellow sauce was also really tasty!

The sauces come individually portioned and packaged,
so you can just open your preferred flavor and dip your lamb skewers in.

Since I wasn't too keen on the Chinese cucumber salad,
I tried ordering the chive salad instead, and it was absolutely perfect to eat with the lamb skewers, and there was plenty of it!
I honestly wanted to ask for the recipe for the chive salad dressing –
it was exactly my style.

The corn came in sweet and savory versions.
The savory one was slightly spicy, great for cutting through richness,
and the sweet version reminded me of "addictive corn" (mayak oksusu) –
both were delicious, so I highly recommend trying them both!

Around 1 AM, they announced the kitchen was closing for last orders, so we added more lamb skewers and corn, but the meat cooked faster than we could eat, so we ended up with a huge pile! 🤣🤣
Nevertheless, Hunjuiqian, a fantastic restaurant in Shanghai, China, was still a great experience.

It was something like bacon-wrapped chives, and honestly, this combo is an absolute winner – you just can't go wrong! ~

Since lamb skewers can be a bit rich, we also ordered some naengmyeon (cold noodles) to balance it out, and the staff even served it for us directly.
Just a heads-up, the naengmyeon has apples in it, so if you have an allergy, be sure to tell the staff before ordering!

Usually, Hunjuiqian gives out ice cream and candy as complimentary desserts when you leave after your meal. But perhaps because they were closing, they brought out our dessert while we were still eating.
I quickly finished it so it wouldn't melt, but I was a little sad because I usually prefer to finish my meal cleanly before dessert.
The ice cream was milk-flavored, tasting quite similar to the milky bottom part of Korea's famous 'Okdongja' ice cream!

We ended up being the last customers, leaving around 2 AM, and they actually escorted us out through the back door instead of the main entrance.
Thanks to that, I even got a little peek into the kitchen! LOL

Hunjuiqian, a popular lamb skewer spot in Shanghai, China, lived up to its reputation among Koreans with delicious food, great service, and excellent hygiene. It's definitely one of the Shanghai restaurants I'd love to revisit.
If you're heading to Shanghai, I absolutely recommend you pay them a visit! 🫡
