Shanghai Travel Must-Do: Hanfu Experience,
My Qipao Review: Totally Outshined by a Male Wanghong!
Words and Photos by Ari
This was my second trip to Shanghai, so I originally wasn't planning on doing the
Hanfu experience, often associated with 'wanghong' (internet celebrities).
I'd already tried it once, and the makeup is much heavier than what I usually wear in Korea.
For someone with sensitive skin like me, the risk of a breakout was just too high.
But then my friend, who's absolutely obsessed with creating content (and yes, he's a guy!),
really wanted to try it. So, I signed us up, partly just to tease him...
And why does he look prettier than me?!
Yep, I was totally outshined by this male wanghong.
It was summer and really hot, so I chose a qipao,
but I think it just didn't have the same impact.
(Photos uploaded with my friend's permission)
Let me tell you all about our qipao/wanghong experience!
1. Shanghai Hanfu Experience Location

The Hanfu experience takes place in Yu Garden,
one of Shanghai's most iconic tourist destinations.
I went to Zhujianmo, a place that's widely featured on
YouTube and Instagram, and where I'd visited before.

It's located on the second floor of the central building in Yu Garden Shopping Mall,
where you'll find fruit and smoothie vendors on the first floor.
For your reference, about 80% of the second floor is dedicated to Hanfu shops,
and Zhujianmo is tucked away at the very back.

Take the escalator up to the second floor, turn left,
go around the corner, and then head straight...

You'll find a sign with this name:

Deposit
However, a deposit of 80 Yuan per person must be paid at the time of booking.
The remaining balance, excluding the deposit,
is paid after the Hanfu experience is complete.
Based on the above, I chose the 'Photography + Qipao' package, and my friend chose 'Photography + Premium Hanfu'.
This came out to about ~$58-73 per person.
3. Duration

Overall, excluding free time, the experience takes about 90 minutes.
I went with two friends (so three of us in total), and we spent about 5-10 minutes per person
taking photos at 3-5 different spots, so there wasn't much free time.
‼️ Important Note ‼️
The night photos turn out beautifully.
Since their operating hours are until 9:30 PM,
if you plan on doing a photoshoot, I recommend booking a little earlier.
Follow a routine that allows for a photoshoot + plenty of free time,
and I hope you thoroughly enjoy your 'Wanghong' experience at Yuyuan!
4. Review
Let's jump straight to the conclusion!

No matter how much we two ladies tried to be charming,
we couldn't outshine the male Wanghong in the middle.
Who knew I'd be completely overshadowed by a male Wanghong in my lifetime?
(I even got professional makeup done the next day,
but it seems that friend just takes to makeup incredibly well...)
Makeup Tips!

First, you get to choose the outfit you want.
There are over 200 dresses, so it can be hard to find what you want on the spot.
When you book, they'll show you images of the designs they have in stock, so it's quicker if you check those beforehand and show them what you like.

Next up is the makeup session!
They remove your existing makeup, apply a hydrating toner,
and then begin applying the new makeup.

Honestly, no matter how good the products are,
if you wear such thick makeup and wander around for a long time,
skin troubles might pop up.
So, keeping in mind you'll return the outfit by 9 PM,
bring mini skincare and cleansing products with you,
and do a first cleanse in the building's restroom.

After applying a generous layer of liquid foundation
and finishing with powder,
you'll have completed the main (?) part of your Shanghai Wanghong experience:
the 'Toshio' transformation!

After that, they add color makeup and apply false eyelashes.

Once your hair and accessories are set,
you're all done!

Doesn't the makeup, which looked a bit heavy-handed in bright light,
transform into something incredibly cute and subtle the moment you step out onto the street?

Remember this:
For Wanghong/Qipao makeup, the key is to go as
"glamorous" as possible!
If you go for something ambiguous, too light, or somewhere in the middle,
you might end up with some regrettable photos!

(When I first went for a 'middle-ground' look,
it was pretty, but the results were a bit underwhelming compared to my friends.)

Also, when you wear a Qipao,
you absolutely need to suck in your stomach tight!
Otherwise, ask for a larger size.
It's great how it accentuates your figure,
but I swear I thought it would burst the moment I relaxed!

And friend 2, the male Wanghong who unbelievably outshone all the ladies!

And for me, personally...
The Hanfu experience was an absolute must-do during my incredibly enjoyable Shanghai trip!
At first, all that applying and removing makeup felt like a bit of a hassle,
but having done it, it's now a memory I constantly look back on with fondness.
Final Thoughts

I've shared my review of Jukganmuk, a place where you can capture once-in-a-lifetime photos in a variety of atmospheres.
Please refer to the location, reservation method, and price,
and after making your reservation, be sure to create some beautiful memories.
And for the best experience, I recommend visiting around 5-6 PM
(this is after you've finished your makeup and changed into your outfit!)
so you can capture photos in bright daylight, during the magical sunset, and with the enchanting evening ambiance.

While the ambiance that emerges as the sun sets
is unbelievably gorgeous,
I believe capturing all these diverse moods with your camera
will create the most cherished memories.
✔️ The photographer provides excellent pose coaching,
so no need to worry if you're not a natural in front of the camera!
