Grand Central Hotel Shanghai Review 2026: Nanjing Road Location & Rooms
Planning a trip to Shanghai? Get an honest review of Grand Central Hotel Shanghai, a top pick on Nanjing East Road with spacious rooms and excellent service.
Planning a trip to vibrant Shanghai? You're in for a treat! When searching for accommodations, you'll find everything from familiar global hotel chains to luxurious Chinese 5-star properties.
Initially, I considered sticking with a brand I recognized, but then I thought, "Why not experience a local Chinese hotel this time?" That's when I narrowed my choices down to two: the Central Hotel Shanghai and the Grand Central Hotel Shanghai.
📍 Grand Central Hotel Shanghai
505 Jiu Jiang Lu, Huang Pu Qu, Shang Hai Shi, China 200001
These two hotels are incredibly close in location, and their room conditions and age seemed quite similar, making my decision tough. Ultimately, I chose to spend four nights at the Grand Central Hotel Shanghai, and I have zero regrets!

If I were to visit Shanghai again, I'd definitely consider rebooking here, especially if the price is right. The hotel boasts an excellent location for exploring Nanjing East Road, incredibly spacious rooms, a bathtub, dual sinks, and separate shower and toilet areas. This setup was particularly convenient for two travelers!
I recently checked prices for November 2026, and I found rates starting from around ~$148 per night across various platforms. If you're looking for a well-located and spacious hotel in Shanghai, this one is definitely worth comparing.

To cut to the chase, I definitely made the right choice by staying here.
A Prime Location for Exploring Nanjing East Road
When I'm booking a hotel in Shanghai, location is always a top priority. Shanghai is famous for its stunning nightscapes, especially around The Bund and Nanjing East Road (Nanjing Dong Lu).
After a full day of sightseeing, the last thing you want is a long trek back to your hotel after enjoying the evening views. The Grand Central Hotel is situated right by Nanjing East Road, which made it incredibly easy to plan my itinerary around the most popular tourist attractions for my first-time visit to Shanghai.
I remember how convenient it was to access the subway during my stay. So, if you're a first-timer to Shanghai planning to focus your exploration around Nanjing East Road and The Bund, I consider this location a significant advantage.
The Hotel's Size Was Surprisingly Grand
One of the first things that struck me upon entering was how expansive the hotel felt. Having traveled to Japan frequently, I'd grown accustomed to the compact rooms of business hotels. So, stepping into such a spacious hotel in Shanghai was quite a pleasant surprise!
The overall ambiance wasn't that of a cutting-edge, modern hotel. Instead, it exuded a slightly classic and antique charm.

Bathtub and Dual Sinks: A Traveler's Dream
The room I stayed in featured a lovely bathtub and, a personal favorite, two separate sinks! Having the shower and toilet in their own distinct areas made getting ready with another person incredibly smooth. No more waiting for each other to finish up! It truly cut down our preparation time, allowing us more time to explore.

I often find cramped hotel rooms a source of subtle stress when traveling, but during my three-night stay here, I never once felt inconvenienced by the space.
Speaking of comfort, I typically pack a shower filter when I travel internationally. I was a bit concerned about the water quality before heading to Shanghai, so I brought one along as usual. To my surprise, after three days of use, the filter showed almost no noticeable discoloration. Of course, this was just my personal experience in the room I stayed in, and it's not an objective measure of water quality, so take it as a reference. Still, I was pleasantly surprised by how good it seemed!

An Expansive Bed for Ultimate Comfort
Even though our room was for two people, the bed was incredibly large. Seriously, you could roll around on it without a care in the world! The room itself never felt cramped, and while it was perfect for two, I could easily see a family enjoying the space as well.

Inside the closet, we found all the essential amenities for a comfortable stay, including a safe, an umbrella, and an iron.

Overall, I was very satisfied with the room's condition. If you appreciate a spacious, classic Chinese hotel vibe rather than a flashy, ultra-modern one, this spot will likely be a perfect fit for you.
Shanghai Night Views from the 17th Floor
As I recall, our room was located on approximately the 17th floor. From our window, we had a fantastic view of the plaza below and the surrounding buildings. While I initially wanted a room with a direct view of The Bund during my trip planning, I found those options often came with a higher price tag and sometimes less convenient access to other areas.

Looking back, this plaza view was actually quite charming! It was lovely during the day, but at night, as the surrounding buildings lit up, the atmosphere completely transformed. We enjoyed the cityscape so much from our room that we didn't feel the need to wander too much in the immediate vicinity outside.
Shanghai offers countless spots to admire its famous nightscapes, but there's something truly special about returning to your hotel and enjoying the city lights comfortably from your own room.
Grand Central Hotel Shanghai Price Comparison
As I was writing this review, I decided to check the prices again for a one-night stay from 11/03/2026 to 11/04/2026. Here’s what the displayed amounts looked like when I searched:
Agoda | Yeogiyaeottae | Trip.com |
~$235 ~ |

Based on my search results, Agoda displayed the lowest starting price at around ~$181. Yeogiyaeottae showed approximately ~$235, and Trip.com's total, including taxes and fees, came to about ~$259.
However, it's crucial to remember a few things when comparing prices. Each platform may have different room types, breakfast inclusions, cancellation policies, and ways of displaying taxes and fees. So, don't just go by the initial number you see! I highly recommend comparing offers by matching the exact dates, room type, breakfast inclusion, free cancellation options, and the final total payment amount across different booking sites.
Would I Stay Here Again in Shanghai?
Absolutely! If I were to return to Shanghai, the Grand Central Hotel Shanghai would definitely be on my radar again. Its location near Nanjing East Road made navigating my trip a breeze, and I truly appreciated the spacious rooms. This hotel is an excellent choice, especially for couples who prefer a roomy stay over a cramped one.

On the flip side, if your preference leans towards brand-new, ultra-modern hotels, its classic charm might not be entirely to your taste.
Beyond the facilities, the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. I inquired about a restaurant reservation, and they assisted me immediately. Later, when I needed help with a local Chinese app, the doorman patiently explained how to use it. Their kindness truly enhanced my stay!

Please note: Hotel prices can vary based on search dates, room types, exchange rates, and ongoing promotions. The prices mentioned above were what I found when searching for a stay from 11/03/2026 to 11/04/2026.
