Planning a trip to Shanghai in 2026? To ensure your adventure goes smoothly, I've rounded up the five essential apps that were incredibly useful during my own visit. Consider these your digital survival kit for exploring this vibrant city!

1. Messaging & Lifestyle: WeChat
Think of WeChat as China's super-app: it's a messenger, a social media platform, a lifestyle hub, and a payment system all rolled into one.
It's absolutely essential for connecting with locals, hotels, and tour operators. You can easily add contacts by scanning QR codes.
While I didn't use it extensively for daily messaging while in Shanghai, I found it invaluable for booking appointments, like a nail salon, even before I left home.
Some places might exclusively accept WeChat Pay, but everywhere I visited also took Alipay, so I never ran into issues.
You might also need WeChat for signing up for other apps, like Dianping.
2. Payments & Transportation: Alipay
⭐ This is arguably the MOST CRUCIAL app for your Shanghai trip! ⭐
China is largely a cashless society, meaning nearly all transactions happen via mobile payments. You won't need to exchange much, if any, physical cash.
And when we say 'mobile payments,' we mostly mean Alipay.
(I personally used Alipay for every single purchase during my trip.)
What's more, you can directly hail and pay for DiDi taxis right within the Alipay app. The taxi fare will automatically be charged to the card you've linked.
(This means you don't even need to download the separate DiDi Taxi app!)
When you sign up for Alipay, you'll need to verify your account with a phone number from your home country (e.g., a U.S. number).
Therefore, it is absolutely essential that you install, register, and link your credit/debit card to Alipay BEFORE you leave your home country!
Without Alipay, navigating Shanghai will be significantly more challenging. Seriously, don't skip this step!
3. Navigation: Amap (Gaode Maps)
Forget Google Maps – it won't work reliably in China. Instead, you'll need to use a local Chinese mapping app called Gaode Maps, also known as Amap.
The interface and functionality are quite similar to Google Maps, or even apps like Apple Maps or Waze, so it won't be too hard to get the hang of.
The catch? You'll need to search for everything in Chinese. 😵😵
My top tip is to save the Chinese names and addresses of all the places you plan to visit in your phone's notes app beforehand. This will save you a lot of hassle!
(Here are some examples to get you started):
Disneyland 上海迪士尼度假区
The Bund 外滩
Oriental Pearl TV Tower 东方明珠广播电视塔
Yu Garden 豫园商城
4. Food & Delivery: Dianping (大众点评)
Dianping (大众点评) is an absolute must-have for any food-loving traveler in Shanghai. It's your go-to app for finding local restaurants, searching for cafes, and even ordering delivery!
I exclusively used Dianping for all my food delivery needs during my Shanghai trip. It works just like popular delivery apps in the West, offering a wide range of options delivered right to your door.
After downloading Dianping, you can link it with your WeChat account to search for restaurants, activities, and delivery services. You'll also be able to see reviews and ratings from other users.
(You can sign up using either your WeChat account or a phone number. While some travelers report occasional issues with phone number registration, mine worked fine.)
Since both WeChat and phone number registration require mobile verification, make sure to sign up for Dianping before you embark on your trip!
5. Translation: Google Translate or Papago
For all your translation needs, either Google Translate or Papago will do the trick. Just pick whichever translation app you're most familiar and comfortable with.
The camera translation feature, which lets you point your phone at text for instant translation, was particularly useful for reading menus and signs!

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a specific reason why I should install Alipay and register my card in Korea before traveling to Shanghai?
Alipay is the most crucial app used for all payments in China, virtually replacing cash. Specifically, Didi (ride-hailing service) can also be used and paid for within the Alipay app. Since Korean phone number verification is required, it's essential to complete registration and card registration in Korea beforehand.
When using Gaode Map (Amap) in Shanghai, unlike Google Maps, all searches must be done in Chinese. Are there any tips for this?
Gaode Map (Amap) is the essential map app used in China as an alternative to Google Maps. Since all search queries must be entered in Chinese, it's advisable to save the Chinese addresses of places you plan to visit, such as Disneyland (上海迪士尼度假区) or The Bund (外滩), in your phone's notepad beforehand.
How should I register for Dazhong Dianping if I want to use it as a delivery app during my Shanghai trip, and what should I be aware of?
Dazhong Dianping is an app for searching local restaurants, cafes, and for food delivery. You can register via WeChat integration or with a phone number. Phone verification is required during registration, and since phone number registration can sometimes encounter errors, it's advisable to complete registration in Korea before your trip.
