Absolutely! That's why today, I'm excited to share my top recommendations for "Shanghai convenience store snacks," based on my recent trip to this vibrant city.​

Spotting a familiar Lawson store in Shanghai, just like the ones I've seen in Japan, felt a bit surreal. But of course, I had to step inside!

Since I went in without knowing what was popular, I just browsed the snack section. Honestly, nothing really jumped out at me as particularly unique or exciting.

Having already had a filling dinner, I wasn't in the mood for any bread either.

The only thing that somewhat caught my eye was this section. However, I was pretty full that night, and my main mission was to grab the famous Lay's cucumber-flavored chips, a special request from a friend's sibling. So, I picked up a bag of those and headed out.

These are potato chips with a distinct cucumber flavor. Imagine a refreshing cucumber taste... mixed with something akin to a menthol patch. It's a truly unique experience!

My friend's sibling seemed to enjoy them, but for me, they were a definite no-go. And before you ask, no, I don't hate cucumbers! I even love cucumber sandwiches, so this was genuinely surprising....

After my first convenience store visit in Shanghai, I came to a realization: whether in Japan or Shanghai, I somehow always prefer FamilyMart over Lawson.

The verdict: Shanghai FamilyMart is superior!👍🏻

For some reason, the snack selection seemed more diverse here—and it was definitely a larger store than the Lawson I visited!🤣

I even spotted familiar Buldak (Korean spicy noodles)!

The bread also looked much more appealing.

The drink selection was also more diverse than at Lawson, likely because it was a bigger store. (Perhaps if Lawson had been the same size, there wouldn't have been much difference?)

The absolute highlight for me was the sausages—they were incredibly juicy! Plus, the price was fantastic. While you're there, make sure to try the oden (fish cakes) too. They're just as delicious as the oden you'd find in Japanese convenience stores!💚

After a rather light meal at Disneyland, these were my spoils from the convenience store—my perfect late-night snack haul!

I initially thought they might be soggy and not great, but I instantly regretted only buying a small amount... I should have gotten more!

While the fish cakes weren't incredibly chewy, they were far more delicious than any mediocre oden I've made at home or bought from a less-than-stellar street vendor. The broth was rich and incredibly flavorful—I felt like I could easily drink a full liter of it!

Original Sausage

I heard that the sausages sold in Shanghai convenience stores were incredibly juicy, so I grabbed an original one to try. And wow, it was absolutely delicious! The "juicy pop" was real. Personally, I found it even better than the black pepper sausage.👍🏻 I seriously considered going back to Shanghai just to eat this again!

Black Pepper Sausage

This black pepper sausage was said to be slightly spicier than the original. It was definitely juicy and tasty, but I still cast my vote for the original.❤️

Nama (Fresh) Cola

This is a cola, but it's a special "Nama" (Fresh) cola, supposedly different from the regular sodas we get back home. I heard that Nama Cola has a stronger fizz than typical colas, so my expectations were really high...

However, it was just okay, nothing particularly special. I honestly couldn't tell if the carbonation was any stronger.

Tsingtao Beer

And then there's Tsingtao Beer💚... It just tastes even better when you're enjoying it right here in China!💚

I was absolutely thrilled with the oden and sausages I tried at the Shanghai convenience stores. They were incredibly delicious!

I visited Shanghai in late January to early February 2026, so these felt like winter menu items. I initially wondered if they might not be available year-round, but having been to Xi'an more recently, I noticed that convenience stores there were also selling oden and sausages!

So, if you spot them in a convenience store during your trip, definitely give them a try!
