Simplify your arrival at Shanghai Airport in 2026! Learn how to use Alipay for DiDi taxis or book hassle-free private transfers for a smooth start to your China adventure.

Before you even land in China, there’s one app you absolutely need: Alipay!
I found that by setting up Alipay, I could handle everything from hailing a DiDi taxi to making payments seamlessly, which made my trip incredibly smooth and stress-free.
Seriously, just getting Alipay sorted can drastically lower the difficulty level of navigating China!
So, let me walk you through how I used the Alipay app to call a DiDi taxi from Shanghai Airport, and also cover options for pre-booked airport transfers.
DiDi Taxis at Shanghai Airport

After clearing immigration at Shanghai Airport, you’ll need to figure out your onward travel – usually a taxi or the subway.
I wasn't confident with the subway system, so I headed straight for the DiDi taxi pickup area.
Here’s a crucial tip for catching a DiDi at Shanghai Airport:
Look for E-Hailing⭕, NOT Taxi❌
If you follow the "Taxi" signs, you'll end up with the airport's regular taxi stand, where you might easily get overcharged.

Make your way to the underground parking garage (typically B1), and that’s where you can hail a DiDi taxi using the Alipay app.
How to Call a DiDi Taxi

I highly recommend downloading the Alipay app and linking your credit card *before* you even leave your home country!
To get a DiDi taxi, simply open the Alipay app and navigate to DiDi Travel, usually found right on the main menu.

First, ensure your current location is accurately displayed on the map by adjusting the pin. Then, search for and enter your destination.
If you're having trouble with the search, a pro tip is to copy the Chinese characters for your destination directly from a mapping app like Gaode Maps (Amap) and paste it into DiDi for precise results!

I usually opt for the Standard car option, but if you’re traveling a shorter distance and want to save some bucks, Economy is a great choice.
Keep in mind that prices vary depending on the type of vehicle you select!

Since I was at the airport, my driver seemed a little unsure of the exact pickup spot. I simply snapped a photo of my surroundings and sent it to them, and they confirmed and arrived quickly!
DiDi also allows you to chat directly with your driver, which is super convenient for coordinating pickups or asking questions.

Luckily, I got a clean and comfortable ride, and made it to my hotel without any issues.

My journey from Shanghai Pudong Airport to the Toy Story Hotel was fairly short, costing around 71 CNY (approximately ~$10).
If you’re heading further into the city center, expect your taxi fare to be higher!
Pre-Booked Transfers vs. DiDi Taxi

What if you’re traveling with family or kids?
In that case, I highly recommend skipping the DiDi hunt at the airport and booking your airport transfer in advance!
Dragging luggage and trying to hail a DiDi in a busy airport can be quite a challenge, especially with a family in tow.

You can even select your flight details, ensuring your ride is ready and waiting for you right after you land!

Be sure to check the passenger count and luggage capacity to choose the perfect vehicle for your needs.
So there you have it – a complete guide to using DiDi taxis from Shanghai Airport, along with an overview of pre-booked airport transfer services.
My sibling and I traveled as a duo, and DiDi was perfectly sufficient for our needs.
However, for family trips, I strongly recommend booking an airport transfer for a much smoother experience.
The prices aren't as steep as you might think, and with guaranteed vehicle condition, it’s an ideal way to start your Shanghai adventure hassle-free!
At Shanghai Airport, you should follow the "E-Hailing" signs instead of the "Taxi" signs. Go down to the B1 parking lot and request a DiDi taxi using the Alipay app.
If you are having difficulty finding your destination, you can use the Amap (Gaode Map) app. Simply copy the Chinese address from Amap and paste it into Alipay to set your destination accurately.
A standard ride from Pudong Airport to the Toy Story Hotel cost about 71 RMB. This is equivalent to ~$10.
For traveling to the city center, a DiDi taxi is the cheapest option, starting at ~$19. In contrast, Trip.com's airport transfer service can be booked starting from ~$26 for a standard vehicle.
