Today, I'm sharing my ultimate 2-night, 3-day Shanghai itinerary,

along with a highly recommended water town tour

and a magical day at Disneyland.

I've already visited Shanghai three times this year alone!

Because of that, I’ve packed this guide with insider tips that will be incredibly helpful for first-timers

or anyone looking to plan a perfect, jam-packed short getaway.

What Makes Shanghai So Special?

Shanghai is widely considered the trendiest, most cosmopolitan city in China.

It's a place where the futuristic skyscrapers of Pudong harmoniously coexist with the historic, European-style architecture of the Bund.

Every street corner exudes a chic, modern vibe.

That’s why it’s not only a magnet for international travelers, but also a dream destination

that locals from all over China long to visit at least once.

While the city is massive, its public transportation and ride-hailing networks are so seamless

that you can easily cover all the highlights in just a 3-day weekend trip.

The true charm of Shanghai lies in how its colors change

throughout the course of the day.

In the morning, you can catch a glimpse of local life while munching on freshly steamed dumplings.

In the afternoon, you can sip tea at a cozy cafe in the Former French Concession.

And by night, you'll find yourself mesmerized by the spectacular Pudong skyline

shining bright across the river from the Bund. 🪄

With tons of direct flights available

and incredibly convenient mobile apps like Alipay and Didi (ride-hailing) ready to go, navigating the city is a breeze—making it the perfect, stress-free destination for your very first trip to China!

My Recommended 3-Day Shanghai Itinerary

I recently went on a 3-day trip to Shanghai with a friend.

While the itinerary below has been tweaked slightly from my exact route to optimize your time, following this guide guarantees you won't miss a single highlight of this incredible city!

🚩 Day 1:

Pudong Airport ✈️ → Yu Garden Accommodation 🏠 → Wukang Road 🛍

→ Yu Garden → Nanjing East Road & The Bund 🌃

If you catch a morning flight around 11:10 AM,

you'll touch down in Shanghai around 12:10 to 12:20 PM local time. After grabbing your bags and jumping into a pre-booked taxi straight to your hotel,

you'll arrive right around 2:00 PM.

Since most hotels in China have a 2:00 PM check-in time, the timing is absolutely spot-on.

I chose to stay near Yu Garden, and the location was fantastic.

While many travelers opt for hotels near Nanjing East Road,

the distance between Nanjing East Road and Yu Garden is only a quick 5 to 10-minute drive,

making both areas excellent base camps for your adventures.

Once you drop off your bags, it's time to officially kick off your Shanghai adventure!

Our very first stop was Wukang Road, hands down one of the trendiest neighborhoods in Shanghai right now.

Starting from the iconic Wukang Mansion, the tree-lined streets of the Former French Concession are incredibly picturesque.

It's absolutely packed with aesthetic cafes, delicious eateries, and great boutique shopping.

Even though we went on a Friday, the area was buzzing with lively crowds.

For your first dinner, I highly recommend checking out "Heng Jiu Qian Yang Rou Chuan" (a famous mutton skewer spot).

They have multiple locations across the city, so you can easily bypass the one at the No. 1 Department Store, which usually has crazy wait times. Instead, I suggest visiting the 818 Plaza branch near Zhang Yuan!

After that, we’re heading out to see Shanghai’s legendary night views.

If you’ve booked your stay around East Nanjing Road, this is perfect because

you'll be walking right back toward your accommodation.

You can either walk from Yu Garden to The Bund,

or go from East Nanjing Road to The Bund and then Yu Garden. Both routes work beautifully! (Essential prep: legs ready for a 1–2 hour walk 😜)

As you stroll along the dazzling, neon-lit streets of East Nanjing Road,

the moment you reach The Bund, a completely different world opens up before your eyes.

You'll catch yourself wondering, "Am I in Europe right now?"...✨

Snap a million photos here, and that’s a wrap on an amazing day!

🚩 Day 2:

Yang's Dumpling 🥟 → Lunch: Ye Shanghai 🦆 → Xintiandi ☕

→ Water Town Tour or Disneyland

Day two is here!

Since my accommodation was near Yu Garden, I kicked off my morning with some local Shanghai pan-fried dumplings nearby. If you're staying around East Nanjing Road, there are plenty of amazing dim sum and dumpling spots like Lai Lai Xiao Long or Da Hu Chun that I highly recommend for a quick (?) bite.

For an early lunch, we’re heading to Ye Shanghai in Xintiandi.

This is a Michelin-starred Peking duck restaurant that you absolutely must try in Shanghai—

I highly, highly recommend it!

Once you’ve fueled up, it’s time to choose your adventure just outside the bustling city center.

Water Town vs. Disneyland: Which one should you choose?

The absolute highlight of your Shanghai trip

really depends on how you spend your second afternoon.

Unfortunately, because both spots are quite far from central Shanghai,

you’ll have to choose one over the other.

🌿 Option A: The Water Town Tour

I highly recommend taking a tour that starts around 1:00 PM.

Famous water towns like Zhujiajiao or Wuzhen

are only about an hour away from downtown Shanghai,

and their winding waterways and ancient stone bridges are incredibly picturesque.

Sipping fragrant jasmine tea at a traditional Chinese teahouse and taking a peaceful boat ride makes you feel like you’ve stepped right back in time.

It's a goldmine for stunning photos (seriously, prepare for your next profile pic!),

and at night, the glowing lanterns turn the town into an incredibly romantic wonderland.

- Travelers visiting with parents or family

- Second-time visitors to Shanghai

🎢 Option B: Shanghai Disneyland

No need to rush for rope drop at park opening!

I entered around 1:00 or 2:00 PM, and even though I only stayed through the sunset parade and

the nighttime illumination show, I was still completely exhausted (in the best way)!

For the sake of your energy levels, an afternoon entry is definitely the way to go.

If you want to get the best bang for your buck,

booking your Disneyland tickets in advance is key.

You can grab them online for up to 20% cheaper

than the official gate price.

🚩 Day 3:

Museum of Art Pudong 🎨 → Diandude 🍜 → Hongqiao Airport ✈️

Ending our last day with some artistic vibes!

At the Museum of Art Pudong (MAP), the Oriental Pearl Tower looms right in front of you, making it the perfect spot for photos. For your final meal in Shanghai, wrap things up with some incredible dim sum at Diandude inside the Super Brand Mall—it's the perfect finale!

Plus, there's a Holiland inside this same Super Brand Mall,

so it's the perfect place to grab their famous "towel cakes" to bring back home!😋

Personally, I highly prefer Hongqiao Airport over Pudong Airport when traveling to Shanghai. While Pudong takes about an hour,

Hongqiao only takes about 30 minutes.

This gives you more time to explore, and

immigration is much quieter and faster—highly recommended!!!
