Shanghai
Hey everyone! It's your favorite travel guide, Cielso!
Today, I'm sharing the highlight of my Shanghai trip—crossing off a major bucket list item: a traditional Chinese photoshoot! 🌸
Here is the realistic breakdown of Day 3 of my 2-night, 4-day Shanghai adventure with my younger brother.
Shanghai Day 3 Route |
Hegaidayuan → Grand Central Hotel → Historic Provisional Government → Polux → Tianzifang → Yuyuan Lantern Festival (Makeover Experience) → Panxiaoshao → Hotel |

📍 Shanghai JOYFU YARD Hotel
No. 462 Ganghong Road, Pudong New Area, China 201202
After fueling up with a surprisingly delicious breakfast at the Joyfu Yard Hotel, we checked out and hailed a Didi taxi to head to our next destination.

We made our way to the Grand Central Hotel Shanghai, which would be our base for the final night.

📍 Grand Central Hotel Shanghai
505 Jiujiang Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai, China 200001
This hotel is famous among international travelers for its unbeatable location. Walking into the lobby, I was absolutely blown away by its grand scale.
I usually prefer spending more on food than accommodation, and while one night here cost more than our entire two-night stay at the previous hotel, it was worth every single penny!

After dropping off our bags, we headed straight to the famous crab noodle restaurant, "Hegaidayuan."
This place has been featured on several popular travel shows and is highly sought after. I will write a detailed review later, but honestly...
Unless you specifically want to experience their incredibly fancy restrooms, I recommend finding a more budget-friendly local crab noodle spot instead. 😂

📍 Site of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea
Huangpu District, Shanghai, China 200020
Next, we visited this historic site tucked away in the French Concession. It holds immense historical significance for East Asian modern history.
While it is a meaningful stop for history enthusiasts, the exhibition space itself is quite small and felt a bit underwhelming in its presentation. I'll share more details in a separate post! 😂

📍 Polux by Paul Pairet
No. 5, Lane 181, Taicang Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai, China 200021
Because of the rainy weather, our original outdoor itinerary got a bit derailed. We decided to make a spontaneous detour to Polux in Xintiandi, a French bistro recommended to us.
While the affogato was a bit of a letdown, their famous French toast absolutely lived up to the hype. It was incredibly decadent!

📍 Tianzifang
Lane 210, Taikang Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai, China 200023
From Xintiandi, we walked over to the bohemian arts and crafts enclave of Tianzifang.

Everyone told me to buy the iconic White Rabbit candy and Shanghai hand creams here. Honestly, I'm not big on sweet souvenirs or knick-knacks, so I almost skipped this spot.

But once I got there, I fell completely in love with the artisanal ceramics! There were so many unique, charming pieces that suited my taste perfectly.
Even if you think you aren't into shopping, I highly recommend checking out Tianzifang just for the unique atmosphere.

Next up was the highlight of the day: the traditional makeover photoshoot at Yuyuan Garden!
Because this was a sponsored experience, I wanted to make sure we weren't late. We left Tianzifang incredibly early, but we ended up waiting almost an hour for a taxi due to heavy rain and rush hour traffic, making us about 10 minutes late.
I absolutely hate being late, so I was panicking trying to message the studio on Instagram and Threads. Luckily, they were super understanding when we arrived! 😂

The studio had an overwhelming selection of gorgeous traditional Chinese dresses. If I hadn't pre-selected the style I wanted, I would have spent hours just trying to choose!

What made this experience even more magical was that our visit coincided with the spectacular Yuyuan Lantern Festival.

Dressing up in traditional attire and posing against the backdrop of the brilliant, glowing lantern displays made for an unforgettable memory.
The only downside was that the garden was closing soon after our shoot, so we didn't get to wander around and enjoy the festival as leisurely as we would have liked. 😂

After the shoot, we tried to hail a cab back to the hotel, but the queue was over 180 people long! We gave up and walked back in the pouring rain.
By the time we got back, it was nearly 10:00 PM. We originally wanted to go to the famous 'Haidilao' or order delivery via Meituan, but we hadn't set up our accounts in advance. Our backup skewer spot was too far, and—you guessed it—taxis were still impossible to catch. 😂
So, we decided to walk to a nearby local gem instead.

📍 Panxiaoshao (The Bund Store)
168 Jiujiang Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai, China 200002
This place saved our night! If you visit, be sure to ask the staff directly for the "Special Sharing Combo Platter."
It is incredibly generous and absolutely delicious, though it isn't listed on the standard English menu, so you have to request it! 💙

Day 3 was full of minor disasters—from underwhelming food spots to getting caught in the pouring rain with zero taxis in sight.
But the magical photoshoot at Yuyuan Garden and the incredibly satisfying skewers at Panxiaoshao completely turned our day around. 😂
That wraps up Day 3 in Shanghai with my brother! Stay tuned for the final day!
