Your Ultimate 3-Day Itinerary for Shanghai

Planning a trip to Shanghai, China, and wondering how to pack the most into a 3-day itinerary? Shanghai is surprisingly close for a quick getaway, yet it's packed with so many incredible sights that even three full days can feel like a whirlwind!

In this post, I'm sharing my personal Shanghai travel itinerary for 3 nights and 4 days, highlighting all the must-see spots. If you're a first-timer to this dazzling metropolis, consider this your essential guide to navigating Shanghai like a pro! 🙌🏻

Day 1: Dazzling Skylines & Riverside Charm

Start your Shanghai adventure bright and early! With a morning flight, you can easily kick off your explorations by the afternoon. To maximize time and minimize stress, I highly recommend booking an airport pickup service.

Meeting the driver right at the arrivals gate and heading straight to the hotel was incredibly convenient.

Especially if you're traveling with kids or have a lot of luggage, a pre-booked pickup is far more comfortable than trying to hail a Didi (China's ride-sharing app) at the airport.

I chose accommodation near Nanjing East Road, which made it easy to walk to both Nanjing East Road and People's Square. This was perfect for morning strolls and evening sightseeing.

The main event for our first day was a Huangpu River cruise. While I'd visited Shanghai before, my friends were first-timers, and I absolutely wanted them to experience the city's breathtaking night views. While cities like Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Taipei boast stunning skylines, Shanghai's is a whole different level of dazzling opulence!

Boarding around sunset allowed us to witness the magical transformation as The Bund, Oriental Pearl Tower, and the soaring skyscrapers slowly lit up. It was the perfect, atmospheric start to our Shanghai adventure!

Day 2: Disney Magic & Thrills

Day two was entirely dedicated to the enchanting world of Shanghai Disneyland.

Many travelers debate whether to include Disneyland in their Shanghai itinerary, but if you're a Disney enthusiast or traveling with children, I highly recommend setting aside a full day for it.

Be aware that summer can be quite crowded. We found that entry took much longer than during a winter visit. For a more efficient experience, combining a 1-day ticket with an early park entry pass is a smart move.

An early entry pass lets you into the park an hour before official opening, giving you a head start on popular attractions before the main crowds arrive. If there are other rides you're keen on, you can always purchase Disney Premier Access (DPA) through the Shanghai Disneyland app later in the day.

My top recommended attractions are Zootopia, TRON Lightcycle Power Run, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure.

The Zootopia zone is incredibly immersive, making you feel like you've stepped right into the animated world. One small downside is that purchasing DPA for the Zootopia ride means you miss out on exploring the City Hall interior in detail. Still, the ride itself, where you feel like Judy Hopps, offers an amazing sense of immersion!

TRON Lightcycle Power Run is a high-speed attraction that simulates riding a futuristic motorcycle. It's popular on Instagram for ride videos, but be warned: the speed is intense, so if you're not a fan of thrill rides, you might want to consider it carefully.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure boasts incredibly immersive visuals. The scenes make you feel as if you're plunging deep into the ocean. This ride is suitable for young children, making it a great option for families. Just keep in mind the dark atmosphere, depending on your child's comfort level!

After a full day of Disney fun, the journey back to your hotel can be exhausting. With my child in tow, using a pre-booked pickup service to return to the hotel was a lifesaver. It saved us from navigating crowds to find a taxi or battling the subway after a long day! 👍🏻👍🏻

Day 3: Culture, Coffee & City Views

After the excitement of Disneyland, we started Day 3 at a more relaxed pace.

We headed to the Xintiandi area to visit the historic Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea Site, then enjoyed some shopping and a meal nearby.

For lunch, we dined at Cai Lan Dim Sum, a chain dim sum restaurant with several locations across Shanghai.

The restaurant was clean, and they even had a separate kids' menu, making it very family-friendly. The food was consistently good, offering a comfortable dining experience.

Afterward, we made our way to the Starbucks Reserve Roastery on Nanjing West Road. This place is massive, and it's fascinating to watch the coffee roasting and baking processes happening right before your eyes. It's a real treat for coffee lovers!

My child was also captivated by the bustling activity. However, it can get incredibly crowded, and finding a seat to relax with your drink might be challenging.

In the evening, to get a panoramic view of Shanghai, we headed to the Shanghai Tower. Just like with the river cruise, we timed our visit for about 30 minutes before sunset. Unsurprisingly, people from all over the world gathered to witness Shanghai's spectacular sunset and night view.

Watching the city lights flicker on, one by one, as the night sky enveloped Shanghai, was truly moving. While my child might not remember every detail, I hope that looking back at photos and videos will remind them of the special moments we shared there.

We only visited the 118th-floor observation deck, but the 126th floor also features a mesmerizing light show. If you want to enhance your Shanghai Tower experience, definitely consider checking that out!

Day 4: Souvenirs, Snacks & Departure

On our final day, with an evening flight from Hongqiao Airport, we aimed to wrap up our city activities by around 3:00 PM.

After checking out of our hotel and storing our luggage, we made our way to Super Brand Mall (Zhengda Plaza). This was the perfect spot to pick up popular souvenirs like Qingzhi hand cream and Holy Land towel cakes, and also grab lunch.

You can also find popular tea shops like Cha Ji Tea and Heytea all in one convenient location within Super Brand Mall, making it a highly satisfying stop for our last day.

If you still need to buy souvenirs for friends and family, or want to try Shanghai's famous desserts and drinks all in one go, I definitely recommend adding Super Brand Mall to your itinerary!

After our shopping spree, we took another Didi back to our hotel to retrieve our luggage, then used our pre-booked airport transfer service to head to Hongqiao Airport.

Minimizing travel stress right up until the very end was a fantastic way to conclude our 3-night, 4-day Shanghai trip! ><

While a 3-night, 4-day itinerary is a popular choice for Shanghai, you might find it a bit tight if you want to see absolutely everything. I had to skip charming water towns and other day trips to fit in Disneyland and the incredible night views.

For my next Shanghai adventure, I'd love to extend the trip to include a day trip to Hangzhou or a tour of a traditional water town!

If you're a first-timer feeling a bit apprehensive about traveling in China, don't worry! Just make sure to prepare with essential apps like Alipay, Meituan, Gaode Maps (or Baidu Maps), WeChat, and a translation app. With these tools, your trip will be much smoother and more enjoyable than you might expect!
