This means I can now share plenty of great
Shanghai hotel recommendations with you!
The Shanghai hotel I'm introducing today is
the Seventh Heaven Hotel—a budget-friendly spot
right on East Nanjing Road, where my son and I stayed
for a quick "0.5-night" stopover to kick off our
mother-son trip to Shanghai.
Thanks to its unbeatable location, this 3-star hotel
frequently tops the list of recommended budget hotels in Shanghai.
Today, I'll walk you through its location, how to book, room conditions,
and its pros and cons in detail.
1. Location of this Budget-Friendly Shanghai Hotel
The building on the left is the Seventh Heaven Hotel
Having traveled to Shanghai several times,
one thing I've realized is that staying near Nanjing Road
(Nanjing Dong Lu) is absolutely the way to go.
That's why so many travelers
look for hotels right in the heart of Nanjing Road,
where it's incredibly easy to get to major attractions
and walk to countless amazing restaurants and sights.
The Seventh Heaven Hotel is incredibly budget-friendly,
costing around ~$45 per night for a Standard Room
(15m² with two single beds).
On top of that, its location is even closer to the main
walking street of Nanjing Road and the subway station than other
popular options like the Grand Central Hotel. Even keeping its
slightly dated facilities in mind, it's easy to see why
so many travelers choose to stay here.

There is a drink vending machine on the 1st floor, and a convenience store is nearby!
You'll need to take the elevator up to the 7th floor
of the building (the one with the grandfather character on it)
to find the reception desk.
Right next to the 7th-floor front desk,
there is an Old Shanghai-style restaurant
and bar.
Apparently, this place used to be a villa back in the day.
It featured striking, ornate Oriental decor.
Although both the building and the interior are aged,
the hotel had a wonderfully antique and cozy
atmosphere.
We checked in on the evening of our very first day in Shanghai,
taking a taxi straight from the airport to the hotel entrance.
The staff spoke great English and were super friendly,
making our check-in process incredibly smooth and pleasant.
2. Room Condition
The guest rooms are located from the 8th to the 18th floor.
We booked a Superior Twin Room
with a City View (18m²).
For a budget-friendly Shanghai hotel,
I was actually quite happy with the room size.
Of course, you can't compare it to a 5-star hotel,
but even though it's dated, it was clean overall,
so I had no trouble getting a good night's sleep.
Inside the slightly squeaky, built-in wooden wardrobe,
there were hangers ready for use,
and the table in front of the bed was nice and sturdy,
making it a great spot to set up my laptop and get some work done.
There was a TV too, though I didn't turn it on,
and the mini-fridge didn't feel particularly cold.
An electric kettle, teacups, tea bags, and bottled water
were all provided.
The window was also a bit squeaky,
so I just left it closed,
but it offered a view of Nanjing Road outside,
which kept the room from feeling cramped.
I had heard they don't provide disposable amenities,
but when I checked, the bathroom drawer
was stocked with disposable combs, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and soap,
which came in very handy.
However, whenever I travel to China,
I usually bring a travel shower filter,
but the shower head here had an unusual shape,
so I couldn't attach it, which was a tiny bummer.
Since it's an older building, I worried the water might not be clean,
so even though there was a bathtub, I didn't end up using it.
Fortunately, I showered and got ready daily without any issues!
3. Pros and Cons
The grandfather character at the 1st-floor shop makes it super easy to find
First, the biggest pros are definitely the budget-friendly price and the location.
Being located right in the heart of
Nanjing Road made exploring Shanghai
incredibly easy and convenient.
It was an easy walk to The Bund (where you get that iconic view of the Oriental Pearl Tower),
and walking to People's Square Station—
the subway hub for heading to attractions like Shanghai Disneyland—
was totally doable. Plus, taxis are quite cheap here,
so hailing DiDi rides right outside the lobby
to zip around to nearby hotspots was a breeze.
However, having traveled to Shanghai a few times recently,
I’ve realized that unless you stay in a 4- or 5-star hotel,
most properties rated 3 stars or below
will have squeaky old furniture, barely working mini-fridges,
and a room vibe that feels closer to a basic motel.
It’s definitely something to keep in mind when booking!
Since I'm a seasoned traveler and
as long as the bed is clean and there are no bugs,
I can fall fast asleep anywhere. I'm perfectly happy staying in budget spots
for a quick overnight stay at the beginning or end of a trip.
My philosophy is to save on accommodation
and use that money to treat myself to more delicious food!
So, while this 3-star spot is perfectly fine
for a budget trip with friends,
it might not have the level of quality you'd want if you are traveling with parents or young children,
or the romantic vibe you'd look for
when traveling with a partner.
Just something to consider.
4. Wrapping Up My Shanghai Hotel Review
Seventh Heaven Hotel,
which kicked off my Shanghai adventure with my son,
may have had some dated facilities,
but its location right in the middle of Nanjing Road
and unbeatable value make it
It was such a charming place to stay, easily making up for its minor drawbacks.
Thanks to this budget-friendly choice, we saved quite a bit on our first night,
allowing my son and me to splurge on
an even bigger feast of delicious local eats!
If you're a traveler who is highly selective about hotel facilities and amenities,
the 4 and 5-star Central-affiliated hotels I recommended earlier
also offer incredible value for money, so be sure to weigh your options!

The front desk of Seventh Heaven Hotel is located on the 7th floor of the building with a grandfather character on it, so you need to take the elevator up. Check-in is available from 2:00 PM, and the front desk is open 24 hours a day.
A 15m² standard room with two single beds costs ~$45 per night. The twin bed superior room with a city view mentioned in the article is 18m² in size.
The shower head in the room has an unconventional shape, so you cannot attach a personal shower filter. Although it's an older building equipped with a bathtub, please note in advance that using a personal filter is not possible.
