Seoul to Ho Chi Minh Flights: Vietnam Airlines Baggage & Tips

Hey everyone! I am gearing up for an exciting year-long adventure in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and I literally booked my flights just two days ago!

Since we both managed to secure our Vietnam e-visas, we started looking into flight options. My partner booked a round-trip from 04/01/2026 to 12/31/2026, while I went with a one-way starting 04/01/2026 so I can stay and explore even longer!

Initially, I wanted to fly with Korean Air or Asiana Airlines. But Asiana's one-way price suddenly skyrocketed overnight... There was no way I was going to pay ~$529 for a simple one-way ticket to Ho Chi Minh City.

When I was booking, Korean Air's evening flight was actually about $70 cheaper than Vietnam Airlines' morning flight. If I were traveling solo, I definitely would have booked the 6:50 PM Korean Air flight, relaxed in the airport lounge, and taken my time. But since my partner had to work the next day, we opted for the early morning Vietnam Airlines flight instead.

I booked my 04/01/2026 flight from Incheon to Ho Chi Minh on 03/25/2026, and the one-way price was around ~$242. VietJet had options in the ~$138 range, but I decided to go with Vietnam Airlines. A quick tip: flying with Vietnam Airlines allows you to accumulate SkyTeam miles!

Ugh, here is a lesson learned. While comparing prices between Trip.com and other platforms, I had a ticket on hold. The session timed out, and when I logged back in, the price had gone up! I rushed over to Skyscanner to grab a cheaper ticket, only to realize later that it was through an agency with incredibly high change and cancellation fees. Please, save yourself the headache and book through a platform that offers flexible booking options!

A round-trip ticket from Incheon to Ho Chi Minh on Vietnam Airlines usually runs around ~$345. However, since I paid ~$248 for a one-way, I will probably have to book my return flight via VietJet or use airline miles to make it feel worth it!

I had about 60,000 Asiana miles saved up, so I initially looked into booking an award flight. A one-way ticket from Incheon to Ho Chi Minh requires 20,000 miles + ~$45 in taxes and fees.

But of course, award seat availability was super limited—only Saturday 03/28/2026 and Tuesday 04/14/2026 were open, so I had to pass.

After booking, you can log onto the official Vietnam Airlines website, enter your reservation code, and manage add-ons like extra baggage, seat selection, special meals, and even accessibility services.

Vietnam Airlines includes one checked bag up to 50 lbs (23 kg). When I looked into adding an extra bag, the cost was a whopping ~$155! Honestly, at that rate, it is cheaper to fly back to Korea on a budget carrier like VietJet to pick up extra stuff, or simply buy what I need once I land in Vietnam!
