1. A Family Meal at a Must-Visit Japanese Restaurant in Dazaifu

While traveling in Fukuoka, Japan, with my older brother's family and the kids,

we took a day trip to Dazaifu.

Dazaifu is renowned for Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, which enshrines the god of learning,

and it's a historically rich city that served as the political and diplomatic

hub of ancient Kyushu.

We visited this past spring,

and even though the temple grounds are expansive and bustling with tourists,

we still managed to enjoy the tranquil atmosphere amidst the lush greenery

and along the charming traditional streets where we also did some shopping.

On the way to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine,

we did an "open run" (arrived right at opening) at Sengyo Inokichi,

a hidden gem for sushi in Fukuoka!

Not only was the sushi quality exceptional, allowing us to truly savor

fresh, seasonal seafood, but the diverse menu also meant both kids and adults

could comfortably enjoy a satisfying lunch.

It was a place where our entire extended family left feeling well-fed and happy!

2. Sengyo Inokichi: Location and Atmosphere

Sengyo Inokichi, the Japanese restaurant I'm excited to tell you about,

is tucked away just off the main bustling tourist street, down a side alley.

This means you can enjoy a relatively quiet and relaxed lunch there.

Despite its tucked-away feel, it's incredibly convenient, located just a 1-minute walk

from Dazaifu Station, making it perfect to visit at the beginning or end of your day trip.

During the day, Sengyo Inokichi operates as a lunch restaurant, offering delicious lunch menus.

Most of the shops around here seem to close around 5 PM.

I arrived about 20 minutes before opening,

and there was already a line forming.

While waiting, various side dishes like spoon rests and braised fish were displayed to browse,

so time flew by as I looked around.

In the aquarium in front of the shop, I could see fresh seafood,

and it was fascinating to see them preparing countless seasonal fish,

big and small, in real-time.

As we waited until opening time, the line grew even longer,

and as soon as it opened, the inside was packed, and a new waiting line formed immediately.

The interior was more spacious than I expected,

and the decor was cozy.

There were counter seats as well as

large tables, so our two families could

comfortably sit and order by looking at menu photos on a tablet.

It was perfect for comfortable conversation,

and they even provided separate children's tableware for the kids,

so keep that in mind!

3. The Menu and Taste

Sengyo Inokichi, a famous restaurant in Dazaifu, Fukuoka, Japan,

is a lunch-focused restaurant,

so you can order their value-for-money lunch sets

during business hours.

There's an English menu, but it was more convenient to order by looking at the pictures.

We ordered:

Today's Set Meal + Grilled Fish (selected) 1,500 JPY (~$9)

Couple's Assorted Seafood Rice Bowl 3,300 JPY (~$21) x 2 (total 4 servings)

Tempura Set Meal 2,200 JPY (~$14)

for a total of 10,300 JPY (~$64).

We ordered 6 servings in total.

We were worried the portions might be small,

so we generously ordered one menu item per child as well, but

having been to sushi restaurants in Fukuoka,

this level of food quality at such an affordable price was truly new to us,

and we couldn't help but be amazed.

Vegetable Salad, Chawanmushi,

Fish Salad, Fish Croquette, Karaage,

Chicken Nanban, and more can also be ordered à la carte,

but since the rest are set meals, you can

order them according to the number of people.

Although it's a lunch restaurant, they offer a wide variety of alcoholic beverages,

including sake, shochu, and beer,

so it would be great for enjoying a drink.

First, the seafood rice bowl, which you could call their signature dish,

allowed us to taste sashimi from 5 seasonal fish,

freshly caught at the time.

At 1,850 JPY (~$11) for a single serving and 3,300 JPY (~$21) for a couple's set,

it was hard to believe such a generous meal could be offered,

and the quality was superb.

Mackerel, sea bream, yellowtail, tuna – we could enjoy

the fresh fish displayed at the entrance to our heart's content,

which was incredibly appealing.

Scooping it onto small plates, we added wasabi and soy sauce to our liking,

and eating it with rice was pure heaven.

For Today's Set Meal, we could choose from Sardine Salt-Grilled,

Monkfish Karaage Fry, Sea Bream Aradaki (braised in soy sauce),

Seafood Rice Bowl, or a Whole Deep-fried Anago (sea eel) Set Meal.

We chose the Sardine Salt-Grilled for my nephew who loves grilled fish.

It was grilled to perfection, crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, with a rich, savory flavor that was just

It spread throughout my mouth with a delightfully clean flavor.

What's more, every set menu comes complete with soup and dessert, so

my niece got to enjoy a delicious brunch. And with a few pieces of

sashimi served alongside, it truly felt like a perfect, satisfying meal for adults too.

The fried fish was outstanding – wonderfully crispy on the outside and incredibly tender on the inside.

The accompanying fried onions, eggplant, and pumpkin were

equally delightful!

Complimentary tea is offered, and

for dessert, we were treated to a refreshing lemon

pudding.
