On my recent trip to Sendai, I was incredibly lucky to catch the beginning of its famous winter illumination. And let me tell you, it was absolutely magical!
Sendai's illumination event is so renowned that it attracts media coverage from various broadcasters, making it famous not just within Sendai but across all of Japan.

The **Sendai Pageant of Light** in **2026** is scheduled to take place for 20 days, from **December 06 to December 25**, transforming Sendai's main streets into a breathtaking display of dazzling lights.
If you're dreaming of experiencing the romance of a winter night, there's truly no better place than the Sendai Pageant of Light.

You'll find the Sendai Pageant of Light along **Jozenji-dori Street**, which stretches from in front of the Sendai Civic Hall to Kokubuncho-dori.
This street, approximately **0.52 miles (840 meters)** long, is adorned with hundreds of thousands of lights every winter, creating a spectacular glow.
The zelkova trees lining both sides of the street join in the festival of lights, adding to the already charming scenery.
Against the dark winter sky, it feels as if countless stars have descended to earth.
Getting the Most Out of Your Visit
To fully enjoy the **Pageant of Light**, it's essential to check the lighting schedule. The times vary slightly by day of the week, so be sure to confirm when planning your visit.
**From Monday to Thursday, the lights are on from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM.**
**On Fridays and Saturdays, they shine from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM.**
**Sundays have earlier hours, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.**
**For a special treat, on December 24 and 25, the illumination will be extended, running from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM.**
The best way to experience the festival is to **take a leisurely stroll** along the street, soaking in the luminous scenery. Walking down the center of the street, surrounded by paths of light on both sides, will truly immerse you in the holiday spirit.

If you're tired from walking along Jozenji-dori or feeling the chill, the Mediatheque is a great place to take a break. Just remember that it is a library, so **please keep quiet**.
