the Sendai Christmas Market also begins.

The Sendai Christmas Market
is a truly special winter festival.
This market, which originated in Germany,
perfectly captures the romantic atmosphere of the Middle Ages,
allowing you to fully experience
the excitement and anticipation of Christmas.
Last year, over 200,000 visitors
flocked to this popular festival, and
this year it has opened
with an even more dazzling and captivating look.
The history of Christmas markets
is said to have begun in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1393.
It's a festival where you can truly experience
the precious European tradition of preparing for and anticipating Christmas
during the Advent season.
Every year as the Christmas season approaches,
cities across Europe come alive with these special markets,
and Sendai perfectly recreates that romantic atmosphere.
Christmas Market Dates and Hours
From December 6th to December 25th, 2024,
this Christmas Market runs for a total of 20 days,
with slightly different operating hours depending on the day of the week.
On weekdays, it's open from 4 PM to 10 PM;
on Saturdays, from noon to 10 PM;
and on Sundays, from noon to 9 PM.
Be sure to check the schedule carefully!
There are also dates that require an admission fee.
These are December 14th (Sat), 15th (Sun),
21st (Sat), 22nd (Sun),
23rd, 24th, and 25th.
Admission tickets are required on these special days,
so if your desired visit dates fall on these days,
it's a good idea to prepare in advance.
General ticket sales begin on Thursday, November 21st, 2024, at 10 AM,
and you can purchase up to 10 tickets per person.
The admission fee is 1,300 JPY for advance purchase
and 1,400 JPY for same-day admission. Since it's not a small amount,
I recommend visiting on a weekday if possible.

will be held at Nishikicho Park.
It's connected to Jozenji-dori Avenue, so
it's a great idea to enjoy the illuminations on Jozenji-dori Avenue
before visiting the Christmas Market.
If you're using public transportation,
you can reach it from the JR Sendai Station West Exit
in about a 10-minute walk.
Exploring the Christmas Market
The Sendai Christmas Market
is brimming with stalls selling Christmas goods
and delicious food.
From families with children
to friends and couples,
the market was incredibly bustling.
In front of the popular food stalls,
there were unbelievably long queues!
It was also delightful to see a variety of music boxes
that perfectly captured the Christmas spirit.
As you wander around,
you'll likely see many people
holding this green cup.
This cup is
the 2024 Sendai Christmas Market
commemorative cup.
You can purchase it along with your admission ticket,
or receive your first purchased beverage
in this mug. The mug costs 700 JPY.
They mainly offered food items
like chicken and hot dogs,
perfect for eating on the go.
There was even a NeNe Chicken stall,
which was a surprisingly welcome sight!
If you visit the Sendai Christmas Market website,
you'll find detailed information about which stalls
are selling what food, so it might be helpful
to check it out before you go.
Many beverages perfect for the cold weather,
such as soup and hot chocolate,
were also being sold.
The longest queue among the food stalls
was at the booth selling sausages.
If you venture all the way to the back,
you'll discover a magnificent
Christmas tree like this one.
Perhaps because it was the opening day,
NHK was holding an event there.
Right next to Nishikicho Park
is the NHK building, and they were announcing at the entrance
that illuminations were also happening inside,
inviting people to come in and see.
There was a huge music box, but since kids were lining up
to take photos in front of it,
I just quickly snapped a picture from the side,
making sure no children were in the shot.
You can enjoy your food while strolling around,
For families with little explorers, you'll be happy to know there are
tables and chairs inside where you can enjoy your treats!
With so many delicious treats and a truly warm, festive atmosphere,
it's a place that just feels magical.
