Sendai's Must-Try Chinese Restaurant
Chinmaya
Hello everyone,
It's Ssalmi, your FIRE movement travel blogger! 😊
For our first dinner in Sendai,
we chose a Chinese restaurant right near our hotel.
I had been searching for Sendai's best eats on YouTube,
and stumbled upon this place that looked incredibly delicious, so I saved it.
Turns out,
it was conveniently located near our hotel!
That place is Chinmaya.
However, we unfortunately didn't get to eat there on our first attempt. 😭
Location & Opening Hours
📍 Chinmaya
3 Chome-9-16 Central, Aoba Ward, Sendai, Miyagi 980-0021 Japan
Chinmaya is
just a 4-minute walk from Sendai Station.
The path isn't complicated,
so you should find it easily.

Just look for a sign that looks like this!
I naively thought, "It's nearby, we can just walk in and eat!"
But oh, was I wrong!

Every day, a 'Full House' sign was displayed.
After two failed attempts,
we finally managed to get in right when the break time ended at 5:30 PM.
What a relief!

The opening hours are:
Weekdays: 11 AM - 12 AM (midnight)
Break time: 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM
Saturdays: 2 PM - 11 PM.
Sundays are closed.
A Look Inside

Inside Chinmaya, Sendai's Chinese food gem,
the interior isn't very spacious.
What's more, most of the tables were reserved,
and besides us, everyone else was part of a company dinner group.
The 'Full House' sign went up again before 6 PM!

More than a tourist spot,
this is a place beloved by locals,
so eating here felt like truly blending in with the local scene.
It definitely added to the authentic travel vibe, which I loved!

On the tables, you'll find
soy sauce, vinegar, pepper, and more.
There was also layu (chili oil) to add a spicy kick!
The Menu

Since this is mostly a local favorite,
there's no separate Korean menu.
And no English menu either, unfortunately.
However, there are tons of review photos on Google,
so you can simply point to what looks delicious
and place your order that way!
For our meal, we decided on:
The Tantanmen Set (1,000 yen), which includes a small mapo tofu rice and a side salad,
Shrimp Fried Rice (900 yen),
and 6 Pan-fried Dumplings (530 yen).
These were the three items we ordered.

For those with bigger appetites, they also offer a time-limited all-you-can-eat option – definitely something to challenge yourself with!
Food

First up is the Shrimp Fried Rice (900 yen).
I hadn't had a proper rice dish in a while, so I ordered this as I was really craving it!

It arrived with a rich, savory meat broth, and the rice portion was actually much more generous than I anticipated.
The fried rice was wonderfully fluffy, and the seasoning was perfectly infused into every grain – truly delicious!
While it wasn't overflowing with shrimp, it was definitely a good value considering the price.

Next up,
our Tantanmen Set (1,000 yen) made its grand entrance.
This particular dish garnered the most glowing reviews on Google, so we had high hopes!

With its generous composition of Tantanmen, a mini mapo tofu, and a fresh salad, it's an incredibly satisfying meal for just 1,000 yen. No wonder it seems to be the most popular choice!

The mapo tofu had a wonderfully thick consistency,
with a subtle spicy kick that lingered pleasantly at the end.
However, the mapo tofu I'd had in Nagasaki was truly exceptional,
so in comparison, this one fell a little short of my high expectations.

The salad featured fresh leafy greens and shredded onions,
dressed with a lovely sesame sauce.
It was a refreshing and perfect complement to our spicier dishes.

And here's the star of the show, the main event: our Tantanmen!
It boasted a rich, meaty broth with a subtle, comforting miso flavor.
The flavor profile was a little different from the Tantanmen I've enjoyed back in Korea.
Even for a set menu,
the portion was incredibly generous – you definitely won't leave hungry!
It was packed with a generous helping of thin noodles,
along with a good amount of vegetables and stir-fried meat.

And last but not least, we have the
pan-fried dumplings we ordered.
There were two types of pan-fried dumplings on the menu,
and the staff recommended the one listed below, so that's what we went with.
I can't help but wonder if I fell for a bit of a trick, though 🤣
Anyway, despite being on the smaller side,
these dumplings were incredibly juicy and flavorful – truly delicious!
Final Thoughts
After three attempts to finally get a table at Chinmaya,
my expectations were sky-high! Perhaps that's why, in the end,
I didn't find the food to be *as* overwhelmingly delicious as I'd imagined.
That being said, the place is consistently packed with locals,
and snagging a table without a reservation is practically impossible.
This tells me it's definitely a spot renowned as a local favorite and hidden gem.
I believe the food is definitely above average, so if you're looking to soak in some authentic local vibes
while enjoying delicious Chinese cuisine amongst the locals,
I wholeheartedly recommend it!
I truly hope my post helps you plan a wonderful and enjoyable trip! ❤️
Chinmaya is fully booked every day, mostly with reserved guests. Therefore, if you plan to visit without a reservation, it's recommended to arrive right when the break time ends, at 5:30 PM. I, too, only managed to get in at this time after two failed attempts.
Chinmaya does not have Korean or English menus. You can refer to photos in Google reviews and simply point to the dish you want to order. The Tantanmen set, which is highly praised in Google reviews for its generous portion, is particularly popular (approximately ~$6).
For Sendai Chinmaya, weekday operating hours are from 11:00 AM until midnight, with a break time from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM. On Saturdays, it operates from 2:00 PM to 11:00 PM, and Sundays are closed.
Chinmaya is located approximately a 4-minute walk from Sendai Station. The path isn't complicated, so it's easy to find; just look for a specific signboard.
