Sarakurayama: One of Japan's New Three Great Night Views

While Kitakyushu boasts numerous fantastic night view spots, like Mojiko Retro and Kokura Castle,
my recent trip took me to the breathtaking Sarakurayama Observatory, famously known as one of Japan's New Three Great Night Views.

In this post, we'll cover:
✔️ Sarakurayama Observatory: Location & How to Get There
✔️ Cable Car and Slope Car: Operating Hours & Fares
✔️ The Actual Night View Experience
✔️ Recommended Visiting Times
The observatory is perched atop Mount Sarakura, standing at 2,041 feet (622 meters) above sea level. You can reach the summit by taking a combination of the cable car and slope car.
✔️ Operating Hours
April-October: 10:00 AM - 10:00 PM (Last ascent at 9:20 PM)
November-March: 10:00 AM - 10:00 PM (Last ascent at 7:20 PM)
The slope car operates in conjunction with the cable car schedule. Please note that the observatory is closed every Tuesday, plus 1-2 additional days annually for maintenance. Always check the official website before your visit to confirm their schedule.

Getting There – Using the Free Shuttle Bus
To save some dollars, we opted for the budget-friendly route: traveling from JR Kokura Station to JR Yahata Station, then taking the free shuttle bus from Yahata Station.

Once you exit Yahata Station, you'll easily spot the sign for the Sarakurayama free shuttle bus. There's usually a queue, so it's hard to miss!
The bus operates once an hour, and the shuttle schedule varies for winter/summer seasons and weekdays/weekends. Be sure to check the timetable before you head out.

Keep in mind, it's a small 29-passenger bus, so if there are more than 29 people in line, you might have to wait for the next one.
The shuttle ride from Yahata Station to the Sarakurayama cable car station takes about 10 minutes.
Cable Car Ascent & The Night View
After getting off the bus, your first step is to purchase tickets. You have two options:
● The staffed ticket counter (card payment accepted, no refunds)
● A ticket vending machine (cash only)
If you opt for the vending machine, staff members are usually on hand to assist you.

Hold onto your tickets! They'll be checked both on the way up and on the way down, so keep them safe.

When boarding the cable car, we recommend trying to snag a seat facing downhill. Sitting at the very bottom allows you to enjoy the ascending view as you climb.

After the cable car, you'll transfer to the slope car. Seating on the slope car is less abundant than the cable car, so if you're late, you might have to wait a bit.
Don't worry too much about the slope car view; you'll have plenty of incredible vistas from the observatory itself. So, once you exit the cable car, head straight to the slope car!
Sunset Timing & Recommended Visiting Hours

Even though I checked the sunset time in advance, the sun began to set as we made our way up. If you're hoping to catch the sunset from the summit, I recommend taking the cable car at least an hour before the estimated sunset time.
This gives you ample time to slowly enjoy the changing sky as the sun dips below the horizon and the city lights begin to twinkle below.

Even though I visited in October, it was very windy and cold at the summit, making it a bit challenging to fully enjoy the view. If you're planning a trip in the fall or winter, be sure to pack warm layers, especially for the exposed observatory deck.

On the way down, we waited about 30 minutes to board the slope car for the descent. Even though we lined up around 7:00 PM, the queue was quite long, so factor in extra time for your return journey.
As the city lights began to flicker on one by one, the combined glow from the industrial areas, the harbor, and the roads created a truly spectacular display. If you have to choose just one night view spot in Kitakyushu, I wholeheartedly recommend Sarakurayama Observatory! :)
