Galnam Port Public Parking does not have ample space, so it's best to arrive early during the summer peak season. When I arrived around 2 PM, all parking spaces near the port were full, and I had to park along the road leading into Galnam Port. It's recommended to arrive in the morning on peak season weekends.

Is it mandatory to wear a life jacket when snorkeling at Galnam Port in Samcheok? Also, what is the water depth?

There is no mandatory life jacket regulation at Galnam Port. Near the beach, the water depth is about 1-2 meters, and if you swim out towards Wolmido (월미도) for about 5 minutes, the depth increases to 8-9 meters.

When you're searching for the best snorkeling spots in Samcheok, Gangwon-do, Jangho Port and Yonghwa Beach often pop up first.

We initially considered them too, but with mandatory life vest policies, we decided to explore other options. That's how we stumbled upon Samcheok's Galnam Port, and what a discovery it was!

It's not too shallow even close to shore, making it perfect for both snorkeling and freediving. The water was incredibly clear, offering fantastic visibility, and teeming with fish!

1. Galnam Port Location & Parking

Galnam Port is conveniently located just a 5-minute drive from Jangho Port, Samcheok's more famous snorkeling spot.

I loved that it's relatively less known than Jangho Port, allowing for a more peaceful and relaxed water experience.

You can simply search for "Samcheok Galnam Port" on your navigation system. There's a public parking lot available around the harbor.

However, parking spaces aren't abundant, so if you don't arrive early during the peak summer season, it can be tough to park right in front of the harbor.

We arrived around 2 PM and the harbor parking was already full, so we ended up parking further down the road leading into Galnam Port.

Since we had a lot of gear for swimming, we drove the car to the harbor entrance to unload, I secured a spot on the beach, and my husband then parked the car and walked back.

To guarantee a parking spot right by the harbor on a peak season weekend, aim to arrive in the morning.

2. Hot Showers & Prices

When I visited, the official public shower facilities at Galnam Port were temporarily closed.

However, several pensions and guesthouses around the beach offered their showers for a fee.

We used the hot showers at Badatsori Pension, located right across from the beach, for ~ $3 per person.

The shower room was well-equipped with shampoo, body wash, and facial cleanser, which was very convenient, but towels were not provided.

So, if you're planning to only use the shower without staying overnight, remember to bring your own towel and a change of clothes.

A nearby convenience store also offered parasol rentals for ~$3.

Galnam Port doesn't have many shaded areas, so if you plan to stay for a while, renting a parasol or bringing your own beach tent would be a good idea.

3. Snorkeling

Initially, when planning my Samcheok trip, I wanted to snorkel at Jangho Port or Yonghwa Beach. However, due to their growing popularity, life vests became mandatory, which wasn't ideal for me as I love diving down to explore the underwater world.

So, I searched for a spot where life vests weren't required, the water was clean, and there was some decent depth – and Galnam Port truly fit the bill!

I also appreciated the freedom to explore at my own pace without lifeguards restricting where I could go.

Just a short walk from the beach, the water already reached waist-level, making it easy to start snorkeling without venturing too far.

You might worry about the depth, but the water is incredibly calm with almost no waves, so it's perfectly suitable for beginners as long as you don't swim too far out.

The water was so crystal clear that I could see the bottom perfectly, and small fish constantly swam by, making it a joy to watch the underwater world through my snorkel mask.

When I showed friends the videos I took, they exclaimed, “You don't even need to go to Southeast Asia!” – the visibility was truly that impressive for a Korean beach.

In front of Galnam Port, you can spot an island called Wolmido, visible in the top left corner of the photo above. You can even swim out to it!

As I got closer to Wolmido, I saw plenty of sea slugs and sea urchins, and some people were even foraging for seafood.

My husband and I swam to Wolmido for a break, and as we sat there, we couldn't stop admiring how beautiful and transparent the water was.

It's even clearer and more pristine in the videos!

Near Wolmido, we encountered a huge school of fish!

It was truly enchanting and breathtakingly beautiful.

Near the beach, the water is about 3-6 feet deep, but if you swim out for about 5 minutes, the depth increases significantly, reaching up to 26-30 feet around Wolmido.

The water wasn't cold, and the clarity made it the perfect environment for swimming!!!

I've been on many snorkeling tours abroad, but considering its accessibility within Korea, the underwater visibility, and the abundance of fish, Galnam Port is easily one of the most satisfying experiences I've had.

My only regret was visiting on a day trip and running out of time for water activities. Next time, I'm definitely using those accommodation discounts and spending two full days immersed in this underwater wonderland!
