As I was planning my Rome trip, I really wrestled with the decision of whether or not to do a Vatican tour.
But having actually gone,
I can tell you: a Vatican tour is an absolute must!

Initially, I thought I could just buy an admission ticket and explore freely.
But since I was traveling with my 2nd-grade child and the Vatican is such an enormous place, I ultimately chose The Day Vatican Tour, which included Fast Track access.

Two Things I Realized After My Visit
1️⃣ Taking the tour was absolutely the right decision.
2️⃣ It would have been a disaster without the Fast Track.
I'll explain why in detail below.
I'll share why I chose Fast Track, why it was a smart move, and my actual tour review.
1. Vatican Tour at a Glance

📍 Vatican City
Vatican City 00120 Vatican City
✅ Tour Provider: The Day Vatican Guided Tour ✅ Option Chosen: Fast Track ✅ Entry Time: 10 AM ✅ Accompanied By: Family trip, including a 2nd-grade child ✅ Advantages: Reduced waiting stress + Explanations of key artworks + Comfortable flow |
⭕ Tour & Fast Track Recommended for:
✔ Families traveling with children
✔ Those traveling with elderly parents or concerned about physical stamina
✔ Travelers who value their exploration time more than waiting time
✔ Those who find early morning tours burdensome
✔ First-time visitors to the Vatican who are unsure where to start
2. Tour & Fast Track: Is It Worth the Extra Cost?
You can, of course, purchase only the official admission ticket and explore the Vatican independently.

1️⃣ To Tour or Not to Tour?
So, initially, I wondered,
“Do I really need a guided tour?”
But after my visit, I realized...
Having been there, if it's your first time, I wholeheartedly recommend taking one!!
Honestly, the Vatican is much larger than you might think, and it's easy to feel lost about where to go or what to see.
If I had gone in unprepared, I would have been completely overwhelmed, and it might have felt like just another ordinary museum.

But following the guide, picking out the key masterpieces and hearing the explanations, magnified the experience a hundredfold!
Even my husband, who usually isn't keen on these things, praised the Vatican tour, saying it was truly excellent. Haha.

Honestly, if you asked me to go back alone now and navigate the same route?
I couldn't find my way. I'd sign up for another tour in a heartbeat! Haha.
2️⃣ Fast Track: To Do or Not to Do?

To put it simply, if you're one of these people, then go for it.
I often say these days that 'you can buy time with money'.
I entered at the 10 AM slot, and even though it was winter, not the peak summer season,
when I saw the entrance line, I gave myself a pat on the back for booking the Fast Track.

Seriously, if you read reviews, people say they arrive at 6 AM to line up for the 9 AM opening.
I'm a morning sleeper, and traveling with a child meant I couldn't stand around waiting.
It felt like my energy was draining even before entering...
3. Why I Chose The Day Vatican Tour

When I looked for Vatican tour operators, there were so many options.
The biggest reason I chose The Day was that it offered a 10 AM entry time.
(Please note that times may vary and should be confirmed.)
During a Europe trip, you're constantly walking and moving, so a schedule that starts too early with a child can be quite demanding.
That's why, instead of just looking at the price, I prioritized these three things:
✔ Fast Track Entry
✔ Korean-speaking Guide
✔ 10 AM Entry Time
I focused on these three criteria.

If you're traveling with children like me, or if you prefer to sleep in, definitely compare tour start times.
Tour start times varied – not just 10 AM, but also 8 AM and 9 AM. You can choose what fits your schedule best!

4. My Actual Vatican Guided Tour Review

After completing your reservation,
if you're using the fast track, you'll need to deposit the ticket fee within 24 hours.
(€45 per adult, €35 per student)
After the deposit was complete, a group KakaoTalk chatroom was created the day before the reservation.
After carefully reading the important notices, we met at the designated meeting point the next day.

Once we met, we were provided with receivers and earphones, and then we moved on.

After ticket checks and baggage inspection during entry,
we followed our guide, focusing on the main artworks.
Honestly, my husband isn't a huge fan of listening to explanations of art pieces.
But he was extremely satisfied with this tour.

He said that hearing the stories behind the famous artists and their works, even just their names, made understanding and viewing them so much more interesting.

If I had just looked at them on my own,
“Oh, that's a famous artwork.”
I would've simply thought, and moved on, but after hearing the explanations, they looked completely different.

Especially with a child, it was great not having to pre-study and explain each artwork ourselves.
Seeing works from textbooks right before our eyes and hearing their stories really proved the saying, 'You see as much as you know.'

Sistine Chapel: Explanation Before Entry
Since guide explanations aren't allowed inside the Sistine Chapel, our guide pre-explained the main artworks and key points to look for before we went in.
If we had just entered without it, we wouldn't have known what to focus on, but with the pre-explanation, we saw everything much better.
Please note that inside the Sistine Chapel, chatter is prohibited, explanations are forbidden, and photography is not allowed.

It was also great that our guide found us a good spot to sit and listen comfortably to the explanation.
During a Rome trip where you walk a lot all day, even a short time sitting and listening like this felt surprisingly precious.

They even lent us old-style tickets, so we took some fun proof shots. Haha!
Viewing Tips!
① Comfortable shoes!
② Entry restricted for skirts above the knee, shorts, sleeveless tops, off-shoulder tops, and slippers (including Crocs).
5. Vatican Tour with Kids: Was It Too Much?

Honestly, it would be a lie to say our child wasn't tired at all.
The Vatican itself is vast, and there are so many artworks to see, so a fair amount of walking is unavoidable.

However, we didn't waste energy waiting in long lines before entry, and inside, we followed the guide's route, so there was no unnecessary wandering around.
There was also a break in the middle, so we recharged at a cafe and continued our tour well.

For our family, focusing on seeing the key artworks properly while conserving energy, rather than trying to see every single piece, worked out much better.
And if I were to go to the Vatican again?
I would definitely book a tour again.

True, if you just compare the prices, a guided tour might seem pricier than exploring on your own.
But honestly, when you factor in the waiting times, the energy spent navigating, and the effort it takes to research the artworks on your own, I didn't regret the cost one bit.
Plus, I can't possibly remember everything after just one visit, so even listening again wouldn't feel like a waste.

Especially if it's your first time visiting the Vatican,
the difference between just “seeing it” and “seeing it with understanding” is truly immense.
So, if you're a first-timer to the Vatican, traveling with children or parents, keen on making the most of your day, or perhaps not an art or religious scholar but eager to truly appreciate it all, I highly recommend comparing tours that include fast-track access.
