Japan is packed with so many amazing sights and delicious eats
that taking over 10,000 steps a day
is practically a given when you travel here.
Even though downtown Kumamoto isn't huge,
once you start exploring the endless arcade shopping streets and historical spots like Kumamoto Castle,
you'll end up walking much more than you'd expect!
By the time evening rolls around, your feet are bound to be sore, leaving you wishing,
'Isn't there a hotel with a hot public bath where I can unwind?'
So today, for those planning a trip to Kumamoto,
I’m excited to introduce a fantastic downtown hotel
where you can enjoy a relaxing public bath on a budget: REF by Vessel Hotels Kumamoto!

REF by Vessel Hotels Kumamoto is
located just one block away from the Sakuramachi Bus Terminal,
where the airport limousine bus stops.
It's hands down one of the most convenient hotels
for when you first arrive from the airport
or when you're heading back home at the end of your trip.
Plus, there's a tram stop right in front of the hotel,
making it incredibly easy to hop on and visit nearby attractions.
To make things even better, the hotel sits right at the entrance of
Sunroad Shinshigai, the city's bustling downtown arcade.
The moment you step outside, you're greeted by a massive shopping arcade,
convenience stores, and fantastic restaurants.
It's truly one of the best locations for travelers.
On top of that, they offer free welcome drinks
and have a spacious public bath on-site—
perfect for soaking away all that travel fatigue at the end of the day.
Despite all these location perks and stellar hotel services,
the room rates are incredibly reasonable—
on par with standard budget business hotels!
📍Based on a Friday night stay in September, it's around ~$96,
and on weekdays, it goes down to around ~$64!

Just so you know, when I compared a few booking platforms,
Agoda and Trip.com were the cheapest,
and their prices were almost identical.
Since the cheaper option can change depending on current deals
or active promotions when you look,
I highly recommend checking both before making your booking!
Interestingly, REF by Vessel Hotels allows two guests
to stay in a Single Room.
Here is our honest review of staying in a Single Room as a couple.
You can take the elevator from the 1st floor up to the lobby.
There's also a convenient express check-out box on the 1st floor.
The lobby was spacious and welcoming,
and a cute, giant Kumamon was there to greet us.
Interestingly, on a tray off to one side,
they had lunch boxes labeled 'Too Good To Waste' Bento...
They were selling some simple snacks and light bites in the lobby.
It looked like they packaged the leftover breakfast buffet items into bento boxes
and sold them at a super reasonable price.
Since they only sell them from 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM,
grabbing one or two in advance would be absolutely perfect
for a quick lunch or a late-night snack!
The staff spoke great English, so check-in
went super smoothly without any trouble.
They also provided a helpful information guide sheet,
making it incredibly easy to get all the details about the hotel.
Just a heads-up: amenities are set up in the lobby
for you to grab freely as needed.
They had everything from cotton swabs to razors,
and it was so nice to be able to take what we needed without any hassle.
In the lobby lounge, from 2:00 PM
all the way to 11:00 PM, you can freely enjoy
a wonderful welcome drink corner.
You can help yourself to soda, tea, and coffee,
and since they also provide chopsticks and a microwave,
it's the perfect spot to enjoy some light snacks and drinks.
As someone who practically drinks coffee like water, being able to get
free coffee right in the lobby was a massive plus for me!
Next up, we headed over to the Single Room
we were assigned, Room 720.
Since it was a single room, the space was quite cozy and compact.
Although it's designed with one person in mind,
the two of us actually managed to use it without any major discomfort.
If you use the space right by the entryway,
there's just enough room to lay out two suitcases.
Inside the room, there was a double-sized bed,
a small table, and a single chair.
The mattress had a nice, slightly plush feel to it,
and the fluffy duvet made it so easy to drift off into a deep, cozy sleep.
Interestingly, the sink was located right by the room's entryway,
and amenities like hand wash, cups, and toothbrushes
were set up right there, which felt pretty unique.
Since the room is on the smaller side,
it seems they placed the sink on this wall
to maximize the space and keep things highly efficient.
Other than that, essentials like laundry bags, a shoehorn,
and appliances like a TV, air purifier, and mini-fridge
were all fully provided.
The room wasn't huge, but it literally had absolutely everything we needed!
Personally, my absolute favorite part of the room
was the city view right from the head of the bed.
Looking out to see the streetcars passing by
gave off those perfect, cozy Japanese aesthetic vibes!
I hadn't expected much of a view, so this was a wonderful surprise.
The bathroom layout was also quite unique,
with the toilet and the shower area completely separated.
This made it incredibly convenient when sharing the room, as we didn't have to worry
about getting in each other's way during the morning rush.
Also, while there wasn't a bathtub in the room itself,
we had access to the public bath almost all day,
so we didn't find that to be an issue at all.
During my stay, I made sure to visit the large public bath
every single morning and evening.
It was so convenient to throw on the cozy robe for a quick dip,
and soaking in the warm, soothing water
melted all my travel fatigue away,
recharging me for the rest of my adventures!
Finally, let's take a look at the handy amenities available inside the hotel.
Since they have a public bath, they offer three different types of vending machines—selling ice cream, milk, and drinks—
along with washers, dryers,
an ice maker, and a water dispenser.
They even provided dedicated glass pitchers
so you could easily bring ice up to your room,
which was absolutely perfect for enjoying cold beers with late-night snacks!
Today, I introduced REF by Vessel Hotels,
which was hands down the most satisfying accommodation
from my entire Kumamoto trip.
Located right across from the Sakuramachi Bus Terminal,
it made traveling to and from the airport incredibly convenient.
Plus, being able to unwind in the public bath morning and evening was amazing,
and both the rooms and facilities were so spotlessly clean
that I will definitely stay here again next time I visit Kumamoto.
For anyone looking for a well-located, budget-friendly hotel
or a place with an excellent public bath,
this is a hotel I highly, highly recommend!

The public bath is open from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM, and from 3:00 PM to 1:00 AM. Since there are no bathtubs in the guest rooms, you can freely use the public bath during these hours.
It is about a 2-minute walk from Sakuramachi Bus Terminal. The hotel is located on the block directly across from the terminal, making it highly accessible when traveling by airport bus.
The 'Mottainai Bento', made from leftover breakfast items, is sold in the lobby from 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM. It is sold at a low price, making it a great option for lunch or a late-night snack.
The welcome drink corner in the lobby lounge is open from 2:00 PM to 11:00 PM. You can freely enjoy soft drinks, tea, and coffee during this time.
