I'm one of those travelers who loves to indulge in a late-night bowl of ramen every time I visit Japan.

Today, I'm thrilled to introduce you to Bon Bon Men, a spicy ramen spot that's guaranteed to hit the spot for anyone craving a flavorful kick!

Bon Bon Men opens at 11:30 AM, but they observe a break time from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM, after which they reopen and serve until 3:00 AM.

How to Order & What We Tried

Upon entering, you'll find a convenient vending machine where you place your order.

The menu is straightforward: you simply choose your desired spice level from 1 to 25.

You can also add toppings like cheese or tomato to customize your bowl further.

A basic Level 1 ramen starts at ~$6. Each step up in spice level adds a negligible ~$0 to the price. If you want extra noodles (known as "oomori"), you can purchase a separate ticket for ~$1.

Since we don't typically go for extreme spice, we opted for Level 5 and Level 8.

It's good to note that you only select the spice level at the vending machine. You'll choose your noodle type when you place your order with the staff.

You can choose between Bon Bon Men (vermicelli-like noodles), Chukamen (Chinese-style noodles), Udonmen (udon noodles), or Jousui (rice porridge). Keep this in mind when ordering!

We chose the Bon Bon Men noodles for our Level 5 bowl and Udonmen for our Level 8 bowl.

After ordering, you'll find a seat, and a staff member will bring your food directly to you.

The restaurant has a long, narrow layout with mostly counter seating. It's not a huge space, but it's cozy and efficient.

This makes it an ideal spot for solo diners or couples.

A special tip: from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM is Happy Hour, where you can grab a beer for ~$1 and a sour cocktail for ~$1.

It's a fantastic deal, so consider timing your visit to enjoy a refreshing draft beer with your ramen!

Our Bon Bon Men Ramen Taste Test

Our Level 8 and Level 5 ramen bowls arrived together. You can immediately see that the Level 8 bowl on the left has a much richer, redder hue.

After a steady diet of sweet and salty Japanese dishes, the sight of these spicy bowls was absolutely mouth-watering!

First up, the ramen in the white bowl was our Level 5 with Bon Bon Men noodles.

Its appearance reminded us of a Korean soft tofu stew, and indeed, the rich, spicy, and savory broth had a similar, incredibly satisfying umami flavor profile.

Level 5 wasn't overly spicy at all, making it suitable even for those with a lower spice tolerance! The Bon Bon Men noodles have a delightful texture, somewhere between glass noodles and konjac noodles – springy and slightly chewy. They felt light enough for a late-night snack.

The broth was addictive; we kept going back for more, and it was truly the perfect hangover remedy.

Next, we tried the Level 8 ramen with Udon noodles!

Compared to Level 5, it had more chili powder and a bit more heat, but the overall flavor difference wasn't drastically different.

Other reviews mentioned that anything below Level 10 isn't intensely spicy, and we found that to be true.

The thick udon noodles had a satisfying chew, and we enjoyed them. However, if you're eating this as a late-night snack, udon might feel a bit heavy. We'd recommend sticking with the lighter Bon Bon Men noodles for a lighter option!

Also, while Level 8 offered a more intense chili kick, for a true hangover cure, Level 5 felt more balanced and comforting.
