Ref Kumamoto by Vessel Hotel Review 2026: Family Stay & Public Bath
Planning a family trip to Kumamoto? Ref Kumamoto by Vessel Hotel offers a fantastic public bath, unbeatable location, and great value for your 2026 adventure.

Our spontaneous trip to Kumamoto meant one thing: a last-minute hotel search. And let me tell you, finding the perfect spot for a family of three, including a child, can be quite the quest!
I worried about booking a room with just one large bed – would it be comfortable enough? Would we run into any issues upon arrival? To avoid any regrets, I opted for a room with an extra bed, ensuring we had three comfortable sleeping spaces for our stay.

Since we booked less than 10 days before our departure, the price wasn't exactly a bargain. However, if you have more time to plan, you might snag a better deal than I did!
But enough about my booking woes. Let me dive into our experience staying at Ref Kumamoto by Vessel Hotel.

Our criteria for choosing a hotel were pretty specific:
It had to be close to Sakuramachi Bus Terminal.
It needed to be located within an arcade.
A public bath (onsen) was a must-have.
And, of course, it had to be affordable.
Considering these points, Ref Kumamoto by Vessel Hotel quickly rose to the top of our list.

Prime Location: Across from Sakuramachi Bus Terminal & Inside the Arcade
Sakuramachi Bus Terminal acts as Kumamoto's primary gateway, especially if you're arriving via the airport limousine. For our quick 1-night, 2-day trip, minimizing travel time was crucial.
Traveling with a child means our active sightseeing window is usually from 9 AM to 8 PM at most. We didn't want to waste precious hours commuting, so we decided to focus our sightseeing on Kumamoto Castle and exploring the areas around Sakuramachi Bus Terminal and the arcade.
This made Ref Kumamoto the perfect choice! It’s just a 2-3 minute walk from the Sakuramachi Bus Terminal building, and being right at the arcade entrance means we could explore comfortably, even if it rained.

Inside Our Room
The room had a soothing, overall ivory tone. It was simple, streamlined, and free of unnecessary clutter. The bedding was impeccably clean and well-arranged, though the room itself wasn't particularly spacious. With the added extra bed, there was almost no empty floor space.
There were no complimentary bottled waters, but bathrobes for the public bath were conveniently hung in a pouch on the wall. While we didn't use the in-room shower, opting for the public bath instead, having the sink separate from the toilet made it easy to wash our hands whenever we walked by.
I only realized upon returning home that our window offered a view of the Sakuramachi Terminal! Though the room initially seemed too small for luggage, we discovered that our bags fit neatly under the beds, making it surprisingly comfortable.

The Public Bath (Onsen)!
Kumamoto is known for its many hotels featuring public baths, and Ref Kumamoto is no exception! Our child has recently developed a love for bathing, so when I asked, they insisted on a bath.
And wow, the public bath here was fantastic! It had a good number of people coming and going, creating a pleasant atmosphere, and even featured an outdoor bathing area. The main large bath is indoors, but with wide-open doors, it felt almost like bathing outdoors while listening to the rain. Absolutely wonderful! It was spotless, truly beyond reproach.
And don't forget the best part! After your relaxing soak, there's complimentary ice cream! Tucked away in a small refrigerator between the massage chairs and a spacious mat area, you can grab your favorite flavor. It's the perfect treat!

Unbeatable Value
Clean facilities, a convenient and logical location, and friendly staff – these are all fantastic. But what really sealed the deal for us was the incredible value!
If you're anything like me, you'll love Ref Kumamoto! Our family of three, including the extra bed, booked a Saturday night stay for approximately ~$161. At the time, this was one of the most budget-friendly options available. Rooms with three beds can often be quite pricey, even if you overlook the amenities!

Our Overall Experience
To summarize our stay, the location was absolutely perfect. Being directly across from the bus terminal meant easy transfers even with a lot of luggage, and convenient access to bus stops and trams.
You'll find supermarkets under Sakuramachi Terminal and Cocosa, a convenience store right next door on the first floor, and a plethora of diverse restaurants nearby. You'll never be short on options!
Even on a rainy day, the arcade allowed us to move around without any hassle. The room's bedding was clean and fresh, with no musty smells. Having the sink outside the bathroom was a thoughtful touch, making it easy to wash our hands. We also appreciated the welcome drinks on the second floor – those small, thoughtful details really stood out. And the fact that the staff were primarily on the second floor meant we didn't constantly bump into them, which made for a more relaxed atmosphere.
