Considering Pichaiyuan is a must-see for anyone visiting Zhongshan Road, I expected a huge crowd. However, when I arrived around noon, I was surprised to be seated immediately without any wait. Had I come just a bit later, I might have faced a queue. While the dining area is on the smaller side, the quick turnover means you can usually snag a table without too much hassle.
Menu & Ordering Process

You can tell just how popular this spot is with international visitors by glancing at the menu – it even had Korean translations! While I didn't need it, it's a good sign they cater to a diverse clientele, making it easy to understand what you're ordering.

Ordering is a breeze: just scan the QR code on your table. Don't worry if you're not tech-savvy; the staff are incredibly helpful and will guide you through the app process if you need a hand.
Shrimp Dumpling Soup Review

The Shrimp Dumpling Soup immediately caught my eye with its delicate, thin dumpling wrappers, through which you could clearly see whole shrimp peeking out. Talk about an appetizing visual!
The broth, seasoned with shrimp paste and seaweed, offered a wonderfully refreshing taste, while the dumplings themselves were delightfully tender and easy to eat.

It arrived at a perfect temperature – not scalding hot, which made it very pleasant to savor. Inside each dumpling, I found a delicious mix of pork and succulent shrimp.
Spicy Pan-Fried Dumplings Review

The Spicy Pan-Fried Dumplings were a delightful contrast of textures: crispy and golden on the bottom, yet tender and moist on top, almost like steamed dumplings. Imagine a dumpling filling infused with flavorful Mala seasoning – that's exactly what you get here!

They arrived piping hot, but the staff were thoughtful enough to warn me in Korean to be careful, which was a nice touch and prevented any surprises! It turns out the team here can speak basic Korean and are ready to help with key phrases, which is a great bonus for international visitors.
Crab Roe Xiaolongbao Review

The Crab Roe Xiaolongbao are a classic combination of pork and rich crab roe. They were perfectly seasoned, with a savory, salty kick that hit just the right spot – not too overwhelming, just incredibly flavorful.

The moment I gently tore open the wrapper, a burst of fragrant crab roe oil and savory broth spilled out, creating an incredibly deep and satisfying umami flavor.
Drinks Review

To complement our meal, we ordered a Plum Tea (5 CNY, or about ~$1). It had a familiar, refreshing green plum flavor, making it an easy and enjoyable drink to sip on.
Total Bill

For two people, our total came to 74 CNY, which is approximately ~$11. This included the Shrimp Dumpling Soup (20 CNY / ~$3), Spicy Pan-Fried Dumplings (15 CNY / ~$2), Crab Roe Xiaolongbao (34 CNY / ~$5), and Plum Tea (5 CNY / ~$1).
Overall Verdict

Honestly, the flavors weren't bad at all. However, given the immense fame from Chef Lee Yeon-bok's visit, I didn't find the taste exceptionally memorable or groundbreaking. If you go in with sky-high expectations, you might feel a tad underwhelmed.
That said, if you can avoid the peak lunch rush, you'll likely get seated quickly without a wait. For a convenient and satisfying meal during your Zhongshan Road explorations, Youxiangju remains a solid choice.
