Qingdao and Yantai are only
about 1 hour and 20 minutes apart by train,
making them perfect for a combined trip!
However, local ticket machines in China don't support English,
and with different departure and arrival stations for each train,
booking for the first time can be a bit confusing.

As someone who's completely clueless about Chinese (like me!),
I used Trip.com to compare timetables, prices, and seats
all at once, then booked in advance for my trip.
You can check everything in English, and your booking confirmation clearly
shows the train number, boarding gate, and seat number.
It's truly the simplest method for anyone using Chinese trains for the first time!
How to Book Train Tickets from Qingdao North Station to Yantai

You can book Chinese train tickets on Trip.com
starting about two weeks before your departure date.
If you're planning your trip earlier than that,
it's best to check your desired dates in advance
and then complete the payment once bookings open.

On the Trip.com app, simply set your departure station to ‘Qingdao North,’
your arrival station to ‘Yantai,’ and select your date.
You'll then see trains by time, journey duration,
and available seats.

A crucial detail to check here
is the station name.
Qingdao and Qingdao North are different stations,
and for Yantai, there are various arrival stations like Yantai Station, Muping Station, and Zhifu Station.
Make sure to choose the station that best suits your accommodation's location.

When I checked, the journey from Qingdao North Station to Yantai Station
took about 1 hour and 19 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Prices varied from around ~$7 to ~$15, depending on the time and train.
Second Class | First Class | |
Price | ~$10 | ~$16 |
Operating times and fares can vary depending on the booking date,
so please double-check before making your payment.

Why I Recommend First Class Over Second Class

You can choose between Second Class and First Class seats.
Second Class has a 3+2 seating arrangement and offers the advantage of a lower price.

I personally opted for First Class.
The reason? It has a comfortable 2+2 seating arrangement, so it's spacious.
Plus,
the wide space between rows and adjustable backrest and footrest
meant I could relax comfortably,
even on days when I was traveling with luggage.

Compared to Second Class, it was about ~$7 more expensive,
but the seats were wider, and the overall cabin atmosphere felt much more relaxed.
For a difference of around ~$7,
I would definitely choose First Class again if I were to rebook.

Occasionally, standing tickets (without a designated seat) are also shown at the same price as Second Class.
You can only sit if there's an empty seat,
so if there's no price difference,
make sure to check if it's a reserved seat before booking.

My Train Ride Experience from Qingdao North Station

When you arrive at Qingdao North Station, at the entrance,
they'll first check your passport and scan your luggage.
Since the station is huge and you'll need to walk to your boarding gate,
rather than arriving right on time for your departure,
it's safer to allow about 30-40 minutes of extra time.

In the waiting hall, you can check your train number and
boarding gate on the electronic display, then wait at the designated gate.
Although most announcements are in Chinese,
your Trip.com booking details also show your train number,
boarding information, and seat number,
so it wasn't hard to cross-reference with the display.

When boarding, instead of a separate paper ticket,
I presented the passport used for booking,
and inside the train, I just had to find the car and seat
indicated on my booking details.
The train I took departed Qingdao North Station
right on time and arrived at Yantai Station
exactly as scheduled.
I was genuinely surprised and amazed that there were no delays, unlike what I expected from a Chinese train (?)
Haha!
Overall Review

Much more convenient
than I expected – inter-city travel within China was a breeze.
If you're worried about or find the process of buying tickets locally in Chinese difficult,
I recommend booking your tickets in advance through Trip.com, where you can pre-select your departure and arrival stations, and even your seat,
and then travel.

During peak seasons like weekends, year-end, New Year, or public holidays,
seats for your preferred time slot can sell out quickly,
so if your travel itinerary is set, I highly recommend booking your train tickets at least 14 days in advance.
